Unit Title: Function Transformations Name: Ramirez, Selena

Content Area: Math- Algebra II Grade Level: 10
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
F-BF: Build new functions from existing functions.
[Include simple radical, rational, and exponential functions; emphasize common effect of each transformation across function types.]
1. Identify the effect on the graph of replacing f(x) by f(x) + k, kf(x), f(kx), and f (x + k) for specific values of k (both positive and
negative); find the value of k given the graphs. Experiment with cases and illustrate an explanation of the effects on the graph using
technology. Include recognizing even and odd functions from their graphs and algebraic expressions for them.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

What difference do transformations make?

-What is the parent graph and family that the transformation belongs to?
-What happens to the functions as different values are imputed with these changes?
-Can the original function be identified once it has been transformed?

Unit Summary:

In this unit, students will learn about function transformations. They will be introduced to the terminology through
lecture and guided notes and graph representations. They will then get to work directly with graphing different types of
transformation which will provide practice using the online tools as well as exposure to the way in which the
transformations change the function graphically. In the in-class activity they will get instant feedback and will be
provided time to reassess any material they may have trouble with. Lastly, they will be prompted to identify graphs with
their name in a Desmos matching activity that will provide immediate feedback. They will also have a unit exam that will
test their knowledge through vocabulary, graphing, and descriptions of the transformations presented to them. They
should be able to identify the parent graphs of these transformations and the effects that small, large, positive, negative
values have on the shapes of the graphs.
