 Grandmaster Abhijeet Gupta won the 20th Commonwealth Chess championship


crown held in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

 The Wildlife Institute of India will house the India’s first repository on tigers, under
its new Tiger Cell which will consist of huge database on tiger conservation and population
estimation.

 The National Handloom Day was observed on 7th August to honor the handloom
weavers in the country and also carter an impetus to India’s handloom industry.

 Vijay Rupani was sworn in as the 16th Chief Minister of Gujarat after Anandiben Patel
resigned from the post.

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Mission Bhagiratha in Telangana to


provide safe drinking water to all. Its objective is to provide 100 litres of clean drinking water
per person in rural households and 150 litres per person in urban households.

 Gymnast Dipa Karmakar created history by becoming the first Indian gymnast to
qualify for the apparatus finals of artistic Gymnastics at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi released theme song '70 Saal Azadi Yaad Karo
Kurbani', composed by Dr. Ghazal Srinivas for Tiranga Yatra to be organised to mark 70
years of Independence Day.

 The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was observed on 9th August
with the theme 'Indigenous Peoples’ Right to Education' to promote and protect the
rights of the world’s indigenous population.

 The Parliament passed The Constitution (122nd Amendment) (GST) Bill, 2014 after it
was unanimously passed by the Lok Sabha by approving all the amendments made by
Rajya Sabha.

 The Maharashtra Government launched 'Quit India 2 Swaraaj to Suraaj Movement'
against various social ills during commemoration of Platinum Jubilee anniversary of the Quit
India Movement. It will focus on freedom from social evils farmer suicide, illiteracy, wastage
of water, malnutrition, addiction among youth and corruption in order to achieve faster all-
inclusive progress on all fronts.

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Yaad Karo Kurbani (remember the sacrifices)
celebrations at birthplace of freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad at Alirajpur,
Madhya Pradesh to develop a feeling in every person that nation is first and individual is
secondary.

 Dinesh Kumar Khara was appointed Managing Director of State Bank of India (SBI).

 The Iron Lady of Manipur, Irom Chanu Sharmila ended her 16-year-long hunger
strike for repealing of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) of 1958 from
Manipur.

 The International Biodiesel Day or World Bio-fuel Day was observed on August 10th
to create awareness about the importance of non-fossil fuels. It was on this day in 1893, Sir
Rudalph Diesel, who is the inventor of the diesel engine, for the first time successfully ran
mechanical engine with Peanut Oil.

 K M Hanumantharayappa was appointed as the new Chairman of Central Silk Board.


He succeeded N S Bissegowda.

 The Union Government constituted the Amitabh Kant committee to look at easing
the policy regime for e-commerce players, including the rules for foreign direct
investment.

 China successfully launched a new high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar known


as 'Gaofen-3' which is its first low orbit remote sensing satellite having a lifespan of 8 years.

 The International Youth Day was observed on August 12th with the theme: 'The Road
to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and
Production' to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth.

 The Supreme Court of India lifted the ban on registration of high-end diesel cars and
SUVs having engine capacity of 2000 cc and above in Delhi and NCR.

 Assam became first state in India to ratify ‘The Constitution (122nd Amendment)
(GST) Bill, 2014’ after the state Assembly passed a resolution ratifying The Constitution
(122nd Amendment) (GST) Bill, 2014 with simple majority.

 Dipika Pallikal won the prestigious PSA Australian Open after she defeated Mayar
Hany in the finals held in Melbourne.

 India’s first Nuclear Suppliers’ insurance policy for ‘Right to Recourse’ was unveiled
by India Nuclear Insurance Pool.

Fact of the Matter:


Indian Nuclear Insurance Pool of
1,500 crore rupees was launched
as per the mandatory provision
under the Civil Liability for Nuclear
Damage Act, 2010 and it provides
capacity for insurance coverage to
operators and suppliers for any
nuclear liability towards third
party.
