 China built the world’s largest radio telescope nicknamed Tianyan (Heavenly Eye”
or “The Eye of Heaven) or the five-hundred-metre aperture spherical radio telescope
(FAST). It is part of China’s drive to become a science powerhouse.

 India’s largest civilian research and development agency Council of Scientific and
Industrial Research (CSIR) celebrated its platinum jubilee.

 The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for first time successfully
launched eight satellites into two different orbits in a single mission from the first
launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikotta.

 Ravichandran Ashwin became the fastest Indian and second overall in the world to
take 200 wickets by reaching the milestone in his 37 th Test.

 The first Druzhba-2016 (Friendship-2016) Russian-Pakistani joint military exercise

was held in Cherat, Pakistan.

  India won the test match against New Zealand by 197-runs in their historic 500th
cricket Test in Kanpur and became the 4 th country to play 500 Tests after England
(played 976 test matches), Australia (791) and West Indies (517).

 The World Tourism Day was observed on 27 th September to raise awareness about the
importance of tourism with the theme ‘Tourism for all – promoting universal
accessibility’.

 The Union Government decided to suspend all talks on India-Pakistan Indus

Waters Treaty in the wake of the Uri attack.

 OP Singh was appointed as the new Director General of the Central Industrial
Security Force (CISF).

 Sudhir Pratap Singh was appointed as the new Director General of counter-terrorism
force National Security Guard .

  R. K. Pachnanda was appointed as the new Director General of National Disaster
Response Force (NDRF).

 The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons was observed
on 26 th September to reaffirm the commitment to global nuclear disarmament as a high
priority.

 The Colombian Government and left-wing FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of

Colombia) rebels signed a historic agreement that formally ended 52 years of civil war.

 The Union Government gave its approval to change the name of Gurgaon to
‘Gurugram’ and with this both the city as well as the district of Gurgaon would be known
as Gurugram.

 The Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport became Asia-Pacific’s only and one
of the world’s few airports to achieve a carbon neutral status after announcement in
this regard was made by the Airports Council International.

 India decided not to take part in the South Asian Association for Regional
Cooperation (SAARC) summit in Islamabad (Pakistan) to be held in November
2016 in view of the continuous cross border terrorism by Pakistan which has created
environment which is not conducive to successful holding of summit.

 The World Rabies Day was observed on 28 th September across the world to raise
awareness about the rabies disease and its preventable measures. with the theme:
“Rabies: Educate. Vaccinate. Eliminate” .

  Jim Yong Kim was re-appointed as President of World Bank for a second five-year
term beginning 1 July 2017 by the Executive Directors of the World Bank.

 India was ranked 39 th among the 138 countries in the 2016-17 Global
Competitiveness Index released by the World Economic Forum. Switzerland (1st),
Singapore (2 nd), United States (3 rd), Netherlands (4 th) and Germany (5 th) topped the
index.

 The nation observed the 109 th birth anniversary of revolutionary socialist Shaheed
Bhagat Singh on 28 th September .

 The United States appointed its first Ambassador Jeffrey DeLaurentis to Cuba in
55 years after the two countries had broken off relations in 1961 after the communist
revolution.

 The World Maritime Day was observed across the world on 29 th September to
highlight the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment
with the theme: “Shipping: indispensable to the world” .

 Indian Army successfully conducted surgical strikes on terror launch pads across
the Line of Control in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) which is along India’s de-
facto border with Pakistan.

  Former Israeli Prime Minister and President Shimon Peres passed away in Ramat
Gan, Israel. He was 93.

 The 2016 BRICS Labour & Employment Ministerial Meet was held in New Delhi
to deliberate on issues including job creation and social security for workers.

 The International Translation Day was on 30 th September observed across the world
to promote the translation profession in different countries with the theme “Translation
and Interpreting: Connecting Worlds” .

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India Sanitation conference

(INDOSAN) in New Delhi ahead of second anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission.

 According to the publication released by the Botanical Survey of India, Tamil Nadu
accounts for the highest number flowering plants in the country. It has 410 species
of flowing plants and is followed by Kerala (357 species) and Maharashtra (278 species).

 The National Mission on Bio-economy was launched in Shillong, Meghalaya by

the Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Development to boost rural economy
by utilizing bio-resources. The mission is unique to south-east Asia and India has
become one of the few countries to tap bio-resources.

 Rajasthan became the first state in India to adopt Central Government’s Street
Lighting National Programme in all its urban local bodies .

 Services emerged as the overall champions at the 56 th Atheletics Open Nationals

which was held in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

 The International Day of Older Persons was observed across the world on 1 st
October with the theme “Take A Stand Against Ageism” .
