(I) INTRODUCTION:

Mumbai also known as Bombay, the official name until 1995 is the capital city of the Indian state of
Maharashtra, Mumbai. It is the financial capital of India. It is also the capital city of Maharashtra
state. The name Mumbai is an eponym, derived from the name of a local Goddess called
Mumbadevi. The city’s history dates back to the formation of the seven islands, namely Colaba,
Mazagaon, Mahim, Parel, Bombay Island, Worli and Old Woman's Island.

Mumbai is the financial, commercial and entertainment capital of India. It is also one of the world's
top ten centers of commerce in terms of global financial flow generating 6.16% of India's GDP and
accounting for 25% of industrial output, 70% of maritime trade in India (Mumbai Port Trust and
JNPT) and 70% of capital transactions to India's economy.

Mumbai Suburban District is a district of Maharashtra in Konkan Division. Its headquarters is in


Bandra. It consists of three administrative subdivisions: Kurla, Andheri, and Borivali. The district
along with Mumbai City district and other suburban communities make up the metropolis of
Mumbai on Salsette Island.

ABOUT THE DISTRICT, POPULATION, ECONOMY, INDUSTRY & TOURISM POTENTIAL:

POPULATION:
As per 2011 census the population of Mumbai Suburban District was 93,32,481.

ECONOMY:
Mumbai, Maharashtra is the entertainment, fashion and commercial centre of India, with the
Mumbai Metropolitan Region economy estimated at $368 billion (PPP) as of 2015. It is also one of
the world's top 10 centres of commerce in terms of global financial flow. Mumbai accounts for
slightly more than 6.16% of India's economy contributing 10% of factory employment, 30% of
income tax collections, 60% of customs duty collections, 20% of central excise tax collections,
40% of foreign trade and rupees 40,000 crore (US $10 billion) in corporate taxes to the Indian
economy.

Headquarters of a number of Indian financial institutions such as the Bombay Stock Exchange,
Reserve Bank of India, National Stock Exchange, the Mint, as well as numerous Indian companies
such as the Tata Group, Essel Group and Reliance Industries are located in Mumbai. Most of these
offices are located in downtown South Mumbai which is the nerve centre of the Indian economy.

Many foreign establishments also have their branches in the South Bombay area. Mumbai is the
world's 29th largest city by GDP. Mumbai has traditionally owed its prosperity largely to its textile
mills and its seaport till the 1980s. These are now increasingly being replaced by industries
employing more skilled labour such as engineering, diamond polishing, healthcare and information
technology.

Mumbai is also the primary financial center for India, both the major Indian stock markets is placed
in Mumbai. It is the capital of Maharashtra, government employees make up a large percentage of
the city's workforce. Mumbai also has a large unskilled and semi-skilled labour population, who
primarily earn their livelihood as hawkers, taxi drivers, mechanics and other such proletarian
professions.

The port and shipping industry too employs many residents directly and indirectly. Like most
metropolitan cities, Mumbai also has a large influx of people from rural areas looking for
employment.

INDUSTRY:
Maharashtra is the most industrialized state in India, and is a pioneer in small scale industries,
boasting the largest number of special export promotion zones in the country. Mumbai city is home
to several global banking and financial service firms. There are also a large number of diverse
industries such as Automobile, Biotechnology, Chemical, Defense, ESDM, Food and Agriculture,
Gems and jewelry, IT, Pharmaceutical, and Textiles, along with a well-developed service sector in
the state.

The progressive Government of Maharashtra is also aggressively taking measures to develop


industrial infrastructure and improve ease of doing business in the state. Such initiatives aim to
motivate investors to invest into various sectors in the state, thereby contributing to the overall
development of the economy.

TOURISM POTENTIAL:
The eastern equivalent of New York City and Los Angeles the financial capital and entertainment
(Bollywood) capital of the country

Places of interest include:


Haji Ali Dargah situated about 500 yards from the shoreline in the middle of the Arabian Sea. Along
with being a religious place, it is a great attraction for tourists; more than ten thousand people of
all religions visit the place every day. Gateway of India, The Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Chhatrapati
Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, ChatrapatiShivaji Terminus, a humongous architectural stone
structure built by the British more than 200 years ago.

Downtown Mumbai - reminiscent of the 19th century British Architecture. Girgaon chowpati beach,

Madh island beach and other beaches towards the south of Mumbai. Elephanta Caves, carved out
of a giant stone on an island are a short ferry away into the Arabian Sea. Due to its cosmopolitan
nature, Mumbai has proven a popular tourism destination most often visited by Indians.
Maharashtra attracts many tourists from different states and foreigners and was the fourth most
visited state by domestic tourists in the country. Aurangabad is the tourism capital of Maharashtra.
