Reading Critically
In this text, the author stated the main claim of the text is the English language changing.
The English language was switch over the time. He used Chaucer’s from twenty-one centuries to
compare with English today, so the context of this text is a history of English language from Old
English compared with English today. The changes are can recognize the difference of the
grammatical structure, vocabulary or pronunciation. The connection by other language and
simplification are the main excuses that considered by the linguist.

As an English Education student, I analyzed the context of this text is the history of
English language changing from old English compared with English today, so this is related with
the “History of English” and “Phonology” lessons from my campus. In those lessons, I learned
about the language changing by the pronunciation and structure also the history when English
has connection or uptake from other languages such as France and Arabic. The examples of it
mentioned in this text. The process of simplifying the English language happened “gh” in Old
English was pronounced while in Modern English is not, it seems English became more efficient.
And the second example that given in this text about simplify is the changing of the irregular and
regular verb from Old to Modern English to be more simple and effective to use. English
language also uptake from others language, both words, and structure of the language, like
hospital from the French hôpital. And this lesson I learned from “History of English”.

In my opinion, I'm not too interested with the topic discussed in this research because I
already learned from the campus and this text leads me to believe that English is an international
language does not happen instantly, but many changes and improvements that occur. But, this
research is useful for students in English Education.

Actually, the research did not provide many sources to proof the author’s opinion, for
example when the author gave many examples of the material, he did not take any sources so it
makes the readers do not trust completely with this research although it is true. Instead, the
author used unconvincing words that makes the readers more doubt of this research such as used
the word “always”. As I know and learned from “writing” course, those words cannot use for
academic writing or research is forbid because it makes a significant claim about something. The
author only discussed word class and words by words but how about the communication words
or ways? Are the communication words also changing over the time? I think this is related to the
simplify point because as we know, nowadays language consists of formal and informal, so it
will greater if the author also discusses that.

So if I am the writer, I will add more sources and related research about my research to
give strong evidence and proof. I also will avoid “unconvincing” words such as always, never
and words that make significant arguments without evidence. This article also did not provide
reference although there are footnotes. And the last, I will add my identity in the beginning or the
head of this research because it is important to acknowledge our reset results because if other
researchers are researching the same thing, they may get plagiarism or even our writing accused
of plagiarism by people.
