Policy Statement:
The United Nations needs to create a policy that creates a proportionate number
of allowed refugees based on a country's size, protect the human rights of refugees by
providing education, and find a reasonable solution for the lack of funds going to top
hosting countries.
According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, there are 65.6 million forcibly
displaced people worldwide. This was more than the 7-9 million refugees the United
States Holocaust Memorial Museum claimed there were in WWII. The British Red Cross
reports that Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, and Sudan create the most refugees. In
Figures at a Glance the United Nations Refugee Agency claims that Turkey Lebanon,
Jordan, and Iraq house the most refugees. The United Nations Refugee Agency adds
on that richer countries like The United States, The United Kingdom, France, and
Germany house just a fraction of the refugees housed by Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and
Iraq. AJPlus talks about the Gulf countries that are some of the richest countries in the
world like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and The United Arab Emirates. Not only have these
countries taken in exactly zero refugees, they are also adding to the conflict in Syria and
The current prime minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May, is part of the
conservative and is resistant to allowing refugees into the UK. Alan Travis from the
Guardian reports that Theresa May has made it her mission not to take part in the
UNHCR-run scheme. In a speech recorded by the BBC, David Cameron said that by
2020 the UK will have accepted 20,000 refugees. In the same speech, David Cameron
states they have provided sanctuary to more than 5,000 refugees in Britain, but David
Cameron says “It is right that we should do much more.” The United Nations Refugee
Agency writes that asylum seekers in the UK are given housing and £5.28 a day for
food, sanitation, and clothing. The BBC reports that the United Kingdom has spent £1.1
billion on tents food and other humanitarian aid for refugees since 2012. The BBC also
states that the Uk has offered £10 million to help vulnerable refugee minors already in
Europe.
In order to protect the human rights of refugees, kids of school age will be sent to
school every day to receive an education. Kids that have no parents or if they are
separated from their parents they will be put into orphanages. Adults that are able to
work will be given the opportunity to work. The money for these things will be provided
from the other counties that do not host as many refugees. The money that is used will
be put back into the country/community that is hosting the refugees and help keep that
country stable. Negative connotations and biases against refugees will not end
immediately, but over time people will start to see that their new neighbors will not be a
negative thing in the country but a positive addition to the culture and economy
