Let’s Rock Transitions!

A Behavior Contingency Plan

Undesirable Behavior Targeted:

Trouble Transitioning – being unable to stop one task and move on to the next.
When transitioning between activities, students continue to work on previous activity. Trouble transitioning
interrupts learning because it delays the class from starting a new task.
Expected Behavior:
Seamless Transition
• “The Educational Song of the Month,” signals transition
• immediately stop working
• put away work and materials from current assignment
• sit quietly at your desk
• wait for further instruction
• listen to new set of directions
• follow directions to the next activity area (reading rug, technology, dramatic play, or art area, lunch
line-up, staying in desk)
Positive Reinforcements:
1. Immediate R+
When students transition correctly from one activity to another, they will receive a gem.
2. Ongoing R+
Students will place their gems on the bulletin board geode trying to fill the entire rock.
3. Overall R+ (Fun-Interactive-Learning-Activity)
Once the geode on the bulletin board is completely filled-in with gemstones, the class will get to break
open geodes of their own.
4. Easy Administration of R+
Twice a day (before lunch and before the end of the day) students will place their gem(s) in the geode.
Interactive Learning Activity:
• TEKS K.7A
§112.11. Science, Kindergarten
(7) Earth and space. The student knows that the natural world includes earth materials. The student is
expected to:
o observe, describe, compare, and sort rocks by size, shape, color, and texture
• Once the geode on the bulletin board is completely filled-in with gemstones, the class will get to break
open geodes of their own. After every student gets a chance to open their geode, the class will then
“observe, describe, compare and sort rocks by size, shape, color and texture.”
Teaching the Expected Behaviors: The desired behavior will be modeled by having the students perform a
skit. This way the students will participate in what the expected transition looks like. Examples of “bad”
transitions will also be modeled. This will be followed by class discussion. Together the class can form a list
of steps of what it takes to “Rock Transitions.”
Teaching the Plan: After performing skits, the class will practice correct transitions throughout the week.
Receiving gems will be demonstrated. The class will learn that the behavior has to be done by every single
student in order for a gem to be received. Each student will get to take turns putting the gemstones on the
bulletin board (twice daily). The end goal of getting to break open their own geodes will also be taught.
Examples of breaking open geodes will be shown via video. I myself will also practice giving verbal
reminders to reinforce the behavior.
Some Options Might Be: This BCP can be molded to just about any behavior. The picture on the bulletin
board and the immediate reinforcers can also be edited according to the TEKS. This goal could also be
followed by a trip a rock shop where they can learn about different types of rocks.
Demonstrate all Necessary Items: Break Open Geode Kits (one geode per student), double-sided tape (to
reinforce gems on bulletin board), gems that resemble geodes
