Statement of Purpose

I am a Biochemical Engineer graduated in June, 2014. My home town is Ambato,

Ecuador. My country is located in South America. About a year ago while teaching
Chemistry at a local university, I questioned myself about how to growth further my career.
Then, the interest in obtaining a master’s degree in my expertise area at a world class
institution emerged. Still, my English skills were not well polished. Thus, studying the
language was the first road block. For the last few months, I had been completing an
English program at University of South Carolina. This experience has helped me to obtain
decent scores in the TOELF and GRE examinations. Now, I feel prepared and confident
to face the challenge to pursuit my ultimate goal. Choosing a prestigious and recognized
university it is important for me. The University of Oklahoma with the Master of Science
in Chemistry and Biochemistry goes hand in hand with my expectations.

First of all, University of Oklahoma's ranking in the 2016 edition of Best Colleges
is National Universities, 108 (TIENES QUE CITAR EL WEBSITE O INSTITUTION).
Secondly, the variety of concentrations for the master’s program and the quality of course
work offered make it unique among other institutions offering similar careers. Lastly, OU
is truly an extraordinary institution that attracts top students from across the nation and
more than 110 countries around the world.

I strongly believe a man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage
to leave the shore. I want to discover new frontiers, to learn and grow my knowledge in
order to succeed as individual and professionally. If quality education will be feasible to
everyone, this world will be completely different because education is a synonym for
opportunities.

I have the required knowledge and competitiveness to complete the program. I

attended several classes related to this master’s program during my undergraduate
career. For example: General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry I and II, Analytical Chemistry
I and II, Physical Chemistry, Thermodynamic, and Biochemistry I and II.
Furthermore, I have had the opportunity to work as a researcher and developer in
the Center of Investigation at Universidad Tecnica de Ambato. The project I work aimed
to get new products through the use of an exotic fruit that grows well in South America:
the cape gooseberry. Some of the information collected was extended during my thesis
work. My thesis project intended to reduce hydrocyanic acid in cape gooseberry’s leaves
and calyxes so they can be used as a product for human consumption (e.g. tea). This
thesis was a well-managed investigation project that attracted the interest of scientific
journals from Colombia and Ecuador.

One of my dreams has been to be able to help poor people, so I see myself working
in a research institution and contributing with discoveries for the people who most need
it. Besides that, my teaching experience in Chemistry and Quantitative Reasoning has
contributed to my professional growing, letting me have the necessary experience to
manage a group of people.

On the other hand, it is true that Ecuador is a small country and maybe few people
even have heard of it. But, that is another reason why I want to complete my degree.
Ecuador needs well-prepared professionals and I want to be one of them. I want to help
my country to progress and that someday Ecuador would be well known due to its
advances in science.

I sincerely believe the University of Oklahoma with its world class facilities and
professionals will expand my knowledge and professional skills. I also believe that
studying in such academic atmosphere will sharp my academic skills. It, in turn, will help
me to teach other people with same shared interests.

It is my desire that the Admission Committee considers me as an avid candidate

for the program and provides me with the opportunity to show my thirst for knowledge. I
look forward for a positive response.
