1.0 INTRODUCTION

As the requirements of course BFC32803 Structural Concrete design 2, we was required to

design double storey building in a land at Johor Bharu district. With preplanning, we choose to
design a 2 storey private building for residential. The area of the building is 160 𝑚2 with the
dimension of 12.3 × 13 meter.

2.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT

a) To design the structure

b) To find the critical loading
c) To find the best method to design a structure

3.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

The structural Eurocodes are European suite of codes for structural design, developed over
twenty five years (Started since 1975). By 2010 they have effectively replaced the current.
British Standard as the primary basis for designing buildings and civil engineering structures
in the UK. Claimed to be the most technically advanced structural design codes in the world.
Have been developed to improve the competitiveness of the European construction industry
both within and outside the European Union. Eurocode is actually a performance code which
has more advantages over British Standard, which is a descriptive code. Eurocode should result
in more economic structures than BS. RC is one of the principal materials used in many civil
engineering application. Civil engineering application such as construction of building,
retaining walls, foundations, water retaining structures, highway and bridges, it is a composite
material, consisting of steel reinforcing bars embedded in a hardened concrete matrix. The
primary purpose of structural analysis is to establish the distribution of internal forces and
moments over the whole part of a structure and to identify the critical design conditions at all
sections. The type of analysis should be appropriate to the problem being considered. The
following may be used: linear elastic analysis, linear elastic analysis with limited redistribution,
and plastic analysis.
9.0 DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION

The design of this project started with the design of staircase. The G & R for the
staircase design was chosen according to the criteria of the private building and also based on
our length of the staircase. The stair consist of 2 flight and a landing which was designed
separately.

Design of frame analysis contribute around 40 percent of this project where the analysis
was based on analysis of one level sub frame, analysis of two free joint sub frame, analysis of
continuous beam and one free joint sub frame and analysis of wind load. The frame we chose
to design consist of two different length and 4 span. The moment distribution was done using
MICROSOFT EXCEL for analysis of one level sub frame. All the shear force and bending
moment caused from the loading on frame was shown in shear and moment envelope.

For the design of column, we choose to pick 5 column which have different no of beam
acting on the column. The max have 5 beam resting on it and the lowest have 2. The permanent
load and variable load for each floor was determined first and the slab loading and self-weight
of structure was included in the total load to find the axial force and moment in column. Then
the total axial force was used to find the column where it’s slender or short. Most of all the
column was found to be non-slender. Finally the no of bars needed to resist the moment was
found and sketch at detailing.

For the each column we design, we use the total axial load to design the pad foundation
under the corresponding column. This higher load was acceptable to resist by pad foundation
because the higher amount of bars needed and the failure of punching shear where punching
shear resistance was lower than punching shear force in the axial force only design. This
conclude that pad foundation should be in higher thickness than the one we design to resist the
load but the increase in pad foundation weight can cause settlement which can contribute to
failure.

Throughout this project, we learned to find a suitable way to design a structure and improve
our knowledge in understanding the use of EC and structural design.
