Hoors (hoor Al-ayn/hurs)* of Jannah (paradise) in Light of the Holy Quran and Hadiths

Praise be to Allah (Subhaanahu Wa' Ta’aalaa);

Intoduction to hoors of Jannah (Paradise):

*Definition of Houris (also called: hoor al-Ayn/hur ul-Ayn/hoors/hurs) from Nobel Quran:

"Very fair females created by Allah as such not from the off-spring of Adam, with intense black
irises of their eyes and intense white scleras". [Nobel Quran; Glossary; Houris]

The Houris (hoors/hoor al-Ayn) have variously been described as being "chaste females",
"restraining their glances", "modest gaze", "wide and beautiful/lovely eyes", "untouched / with
hymen unbroken by sexual intercourse", "like pearls", "virgins", "voluptuous/full-breasted",
"with large, "non-menstruating/urinating/defecating and childfree", round breasts which are not
inclined to hang", "companions of equal age", "transparent to the marrow of their bones",
"eternally young", "hairless" , "pure", "beautiful", "white", "revirginating", "splendid beauty".

Now you can read some verses of the Holy Quran mentioning the attributes of Houris
(Hoor al-ayn/Hurs):

"And with them will be chaste females, restraining their glances (desiring none except their
husbands), with wide and beautiful eyes; (Delicate and pure) as if they were (hidden) eggs (well)
preserved." [Sura As-Sâffât (37):40-48]

"And beside them will be chaste females (virgins) restraining their glances only for their
husbands, (and) of equal ages." [Sura Sâd (38):52]

"So (it will be), and We shall marry them to Houris (female fair ones) with wide, lovely eyes."
[Sura Ad-Dukhân (44):51-55]

"They will recline (with ease) on thrones arranged in ranks. And We shall marry them to Houris
(female, fair ones) with wide lovely eyes." [Sura At-Tûr (52):20]

"Wherein both (gardens) will be those (maidens) restraining their glances upon their husbands,
whom no man or jinn yatmithhunna (has opened their hymens with sexual intercourse) before
them. Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinns and men) deny? (In beauty)
they are like rubies and coral." [Sura Ar-Rahmân (55):56-58]

"Therein (gardens) will be fair (wives) good and beautiful; ...Houris (beautiful, fair females)
restrained in pavilions; ...Whom no man or jinn yatmithhunna (has opened their hymens with
sexual intercourse) before them." [Sura Ar-Rahmân (55):70,72,74]

"And (there will be) Houris (fair females) with wide, lovely eyes (as wives for the pious), Like
unto preserved pearls." [Sura Al-Wâqi'ah (56):22-23]

Verily, We have created them (maidens) of special creation. And made them virgins; Loving
(their husbands only), equal in age. [Sura Al-Wâqi'ah (56):37-40]

And young full-breasted (mature) maidens of equal age; [Sura An-Naba' (78):33]

Now you can read some Hadiths regarding the attributes of Houris (Hur ul-ayn/Hoors):

Allâh (SWT) says in the Holy Quran:

"Houris (beautiful, fair females) restrained in pavilions

...With Whom no man or jinn "yatmithhunna" (has opened their hymens with sexual intercourse)
before them." [Sura Ar-Rahmân (55):72,74]

"The statement of Allah in above mentioned ayah, Beautiful fair females restrained in pavilions.
Narrated Qaisi, Allah’s Apostle said, ‘In Paradise there is a pavilion made of a single hollow
pearl sixty miles wide, in each corner there are wives (houris) who will not see those in the other
corners; and the believers (Muslims) will visit and enjoy them.’" [Al-Bukhari vol.6:402 and prior
p.374]

According to Ibn Kathir (died 1373 CE) in his Holy Quranic commentary (Tafsir) of the above
mentioned Surah Al-Rahman (55), verse 72: "The Prophet Muhammad was heard saying: ‘The
smallest reward for the people of paradise is an abode where there are 80,000 servants and 72
wives (houris), over which stands a dome decorated with pearls, aquamarine, and ruby, as wide
as the distance from Al-Jabiyyah [a Damascus suburb] to Sana'a [Yemen]’." [Tafsir Ibn Kathir]

The Prophet (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬said, "If a houri looks down from her abode in heaven onto the
earth, the whole distance (space) shall be filled with light and fragrance. A houri's face is more
radiant than a mirror, and one can see one's image in her cheek. The marrow of her shins is
visible to the eyes." [Mishkat, volume 3,pg 83-97]

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "The first batch (of people) who will enter Paradise will
be (glittering) like the full moon, and the batch next to them will be (glittering) like the most
brilliant star in the sky. Their hearts will be as if the heart of a single man, for they will have
neither enmity nor jealousy amongst themselves; everyone will have two wives from the houris,
(who will be so beautiful, pure and transparent that) the marrow of the bones of their legs will be
seen through the bones and the flesh." [Al-Bukhari vol.4, book 54, number 476]

Narrated Anas (R.A.): The Prophet (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬said, "A single endeavor (of fighting) in
Allah's Cause in the afternoon or in the forenoon is better than all the world and whatever is in it.
A place in Paradise as small as the bow or lash of one of you is better than all the world and
whatever is in it. And if a houri from Paradise appeared to the people of the earth, she would fill
the space between Heaven and the Earth with light and pleasant scent and her head cover is
better than the world and whatever is in it." [Al-Bukhari volume 4, book 52, number 53]

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "The first group of people who will enter Paradise,
will be glittering like the full moon and those who will follow them, will glitter like the most
brilliant star in the sky. They will not urinate, relieve nature, spit, or have any nasal secretions.
Their combs will be of gold, and their sweat will smell like musk. The aloes-wood will be used
in their centers. Their wives will be houris. All of them will look alike and will resemble their
father Adam (in statute), sixty cubits tall." [Al-Bukhari vol.4, book 55, number 544]

The Prophet (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬said: "A houri is a most beautiful young woman with a transparent
body. The marrow of her bones is visible like the interior lines of pearls and rubies. She looks
like red wine in a white glass. She is of white color, and free from the routine physical
disabilities of an ordinary woman such as menstruation, menopause, urinal and offal discharge,
child bearing and the related pollution. A houri is a girl of tender age, having large breasts which
are round (pointed), and not inclined to dangle. Houris dwell in palaces of splendid
surroundings." [At-Tirmizi, volume 2, pg 35-40]

In book by the great Imam Ghazzali: Ihya Uloom Ed-Din. Volume 4, Page-4.430;

"According to Prophet Muhammad (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬the Hurs (Houris) of Paradise will be pure
women—free of menstruation, urine, stool, cough and children. The Hurs will sing in Paradise
on divine purity and praise—we are most beautiful Hurs and we are for the honored husbands.
Muhammad also said that an inmate of Paradise will have the sexual strength of 70 men.
Muhammad said, "An inmate of Paradise will have 500 Hurs, 4,000 unmarried women and 8,000
widowed women. Each of them will keep embracing him for the duration of his whole worldly
life."

Volume 4, Page-4.428 of the same book: The Prophet Muhammad (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬said once to
Jaber: "Shall I not give you the news of the windows of Paradise ? We said: 0 Messenger of God
give us that information. He said: Those are made of emeralds and jewels. Their inner parts will
be seen from their outer parts. Therein there will be such enjoyments, amusements and joys as no
eye has seen, no ear has heard and no heart has conceived. I said: 0 Messenger of God, who will
be the owners of those windows? He said: Those who spread peace, give food, keep fasts, pray at
night when the people remain asleep. We asked: 0 Messenger of God, who will be able to do
that? He said: My people will be able to do that. I am saying it to you. He who meets his brother,
salutes him and replies to his salute,' spreads peace; and he who gives food to his wife and
members of his family to their satisfaction gives food. He, who keeps fast of Ramazan and three
days every month, keeps fast as it were for the whole year. He who prays Isha and Fajr in
congregation prays as it were the whole night when the people remain asleep. God says: The fine
buildings in Eden Paradise.' The Prophet said regarding its meanings: These places are builts of
emeralds and jewels and in each building there will be 70 rooms of red colour and in each room
70 sub-rooms of green colour and in each sub-room there will be one throne and over each
throne 70 beds of varied colours and on each bed a hoor al-ayn (houri- a girl having wide lovely
eyes with intense black irises). There will be 70 dining cloth in each room and 70 kinds of food
in each dining cloth. There will be seven girls in each room. Each believer will be given such
strength in the morning as he can cohabit with them".

Abu ‘Umama (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah’s Messenger (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬said:
"Allah will not admit anyone in the Paradise but Allah, the Mighty and glorious will marry him
with 72 wives, two will be from virgin (houris) with big eyes and 70 will be his inheritance from
the people of the Hell-Fire*." Every one of them will have a pleasant vagina and he (the man)
will have sexual organ that does not bend down during sexual intercourse (perpetual erection)."
[Ibn Majah, volume 5, number 4337]
*Hashim b. Khalid (R.A.) says, ‘The words "out of his inheritance (due) from the denizens of the
Fire", mean men who will enter the Fire (Hell) and the inmates of the paradise will inherit their
wives just as the Faroah’s wife (Asiah A.S.) will be inherited (by the Muslims-believers).

Mention of the hope of maidens of paradise after martyrdom in Al-Tabari vol.19 p.121; "Yet, by
God, I feel happy for what we shall soon meet, for, by God, if all there is between us and the
maidens of Paradise (hur al-ayn/houri) is that these people should come against us with their
swords, then I want them to come against us with their swords."

Abu Hurayrah (R.A.) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬said that: "Every
man in heaven will go to 72 of the creatures of Allah (houris) and 2 of the women of mankind,
these two women are superior to the creatures of Allah (houris) with their worshipping (good
deeds) they had performed in this world." [Bayhaqi, al-Bas wa’n-Nushur; Tabari, Tafsir; Abu
Yala, Ibn Hajar, Fathu’l-Baari, Tabarani and others]

Houris do not want wives to annoy their husbands, since the houris will also be the spouses [i.e.
wives] of the Muslim husbands in the afterlife; ---"Mu’adh b. Jobal (R.A.) reported that Allah’s
Messenger (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬said, ‘A woman does not annoy her husband but his spouse from
amongst the houris (maidens with wide eyes, intensely white and deeply black irises) will say:
Do not annoy him, may Allah ruin you." He is with you as a passing guest. Very soon, he will
part with you and come to us.’" [Ibn-i-Majah vol.3:2014 p.212]

Now from the above mentioned verses of Holy Quran and Hadiths we can summarize the
characteristics of Houris (Hoors/Hur al-ayn) as follows;

* A houri is a most beautiful young woman with a transparent body. The marrow of her bones is
visible like the interior lines of pearls and rubies. She looks like a red wine in a white glass.
* She is of white color, and free from the routine physical disabilities of an ordinary woman such
as menstruation, menopause, urinal and offal discharge, child bearing and the related pollution.
* She is a woman characterized by modesty and flexing glances; she never looks at any man
except her husband and feels grateful for being the wife of her husband.
* A houri is a young woman, free from odium and animosity. Besides, she knows the meaning of
love and has the ability to put it into practice.
* A houri is an immortal woman, who does not age. She speaks softly and does not raise voice at
her man; she is always reconciled with him. Having been brought up in luxury, she is a luxury
herself.
* A houri is a girl of tender age, having large rising breasts which are round, and not inclined to
dangle.
* Houris dwell in palaces of splendid surroundings.
* If a houri looks down from her abode in Heaven onto the earth, the whole distance shall be
filled with light and fragrance
* A houri's face is more radiant than a mirror and one can see one's image in her cheek. The
marrow of her shins is visible to the eyes.
* Every man who enters Paradise shall be given minimum seventy-two houris; no matter at what
age he had died, when he enters Paradise, he will become a thirty-year-old and he will not age
any further.
* Their glances, with big eyes (Of wonder and beauty)
* when a man turns his face away from her, she will become 70 times more beautiful in his eyes
* if she were to spit in the salty water of the seven occeans, then all the seven occeans would turn
sweater than honey.

Also note that the Muslim women of this world will be superior to Houris (Hoors/Hur al-
ayn) in Paradise:

*Definition of Houris (hoors/hur al-ayn) from Noble Quran:

"Very fair females created by Allah as such not from the off-spring of Adam, with intense black
irises of their eyes and intense white scleras". [Noble Quran; Glossary; Houris]

So it is obvious that houris (hoor al-Ayn) will be different from the off-springs of the Prophet
Adam (A.S.), and as humans are the most superior creation of Allah (SWT) so Muslim women
are superior to houris just like we as humans are superior to Jinns, Angels and all other creatures
of Allah (SWT) that exist. So a hoori who is one of the delights of Paradise, she has only been
created in Paradise for the sake of someone else, and has been made the reward for the believing
man for his righteous deeds.

But for Muslim women, they themselves are from the off-springs of Adam and the rewards of
Paradise are created for them and on the contrary houris (hoors/hur al-ayn) themselves are from
the rewards of Paradise.

Therefore it is clear that Muslim women will not feel jealous of the houris (hoor al-Ayn) as
righteous women of this world will be much more superior and beautiful than houris (hoor al-
Ayn), in Jannah (Paradise). Thus the Muslim women of this worldly life have superiority over
houris (hoor al-Ayn) due to the acts of worship and obedience that they performed in this world.
Therefore, the believing (Muslim) women will enter Paradise just like the believing men. If a
Muslim woman had a number of husbands, she, upon entering Paradise with them, would choose
among them the one with the best character and behavior.

The following two Hadiths confirms the fact stated above:

Umme Salamah (Radiahallahu Anha) narrates that she said to the Prophet Muhammad
(Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) "O Rasûlullah, are the women of this world superior or the hûrs (of
Paradise)?" He replied, "The women of this world will have superiority over the hûrs (houris)
just as the outer lining of a garment has superiority over the inner lining." Umme Salamah R.A
then asked, "O Rasûlullah, what is the reason for this?" He answered, "Because they performed
salâh, fasted, and worshipped [Allah]. Allah will put light on their faces and silk on their bodies.
[The human women] will be fair in complexion and will wear green clothing and yellow jewelry.
Their incense-burners will be made of pearls and their combs will be of gold. They will say, 'We
are the women who will stay forever and we will never die. We are the women who will always
remain in comfort and we will never undergo difficulty. We are the women who will stay and we
will never leave. Listen, we are happy women and we will never become sad. Glad tidings to
those men for whom we are and who are for us.'" [Tabrânî]

Al-Qurtubi said: Abu Bakr ibn al-Najjaad said: Ja’far ibn Muhammad ibn Shaakir told us,
‘Ubayd ibn Ishaaq al-‘Attaar told us, Sinaan ibn Haaroon told us, from Humayd from Anas that:
Umm Habeebah the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "O
Messenger of Allaah, if a woman had two husbands in this life, then they all died and came
together in Paradise, with which of them would she be – the first or the last?" He said: "With the
one whose attitude and conduct with her was best, O Umm Habeebah; a good attitude brings one
the best of this world and the Hereafter."[Al-Tadhkirah fi Ahwaal al-Mawtaa wa’l-Aakhirah,
2/278]

Imam Qurtubi in his "at-Tadhkirah fi-Ahwalil Mawta wa'l-Akhirah (in Remembrance of the
Affairs of the Dead and Doomsday)" and Ibn Kathir in his "al-Bidaya wa'n-Nihaya (Kitabu’l-
Fitan wa’l-Malahim) the Termination of the Afflictions and Fierce Battles" tell the story of the
songs of houri in heaven: "Houri will sing for their own husbands, songs are so marvelous that
every hearer will be so pleased. Houri will say: "We are Houri who has not had a sin." The
women of this world will reply them saying: "We are the fasters (who keep fast), and you are
not, we are the prayers, but you are not and we are the givers of charity but you are not."

And there is another narration which is famous with the name "Hadith of Soor" narrated from
Abu Hurayrah (R.A.) that the Prophet Muhammad (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬said that: "Every man in
heaven will go to 72 of the creatures of Allah (houris) and 2 of the women of mankind, these two
women are superior to the creatures of Allah (houris) with their worshipping (good deeds) they
had performed in this world." [Bayhaqi, al-Bas wa’n-Nushur; Tabari, Tafsir; Abu Yala, Ibn Hajar,
Fathu’l-Baari, Tabarani and others]

Now some people, mostly non-muslims still ask a question that: there will be multiple wives
or houris (hoor al-Ayn/hur ul-Ayn/hoors/hurs) in Islamic Paradise for Muslim men then
what is for Muslim women?

As stated in above mentioned Hadiths the situation of the believing woman in Paradise will be
better than the situation of the houris (hoor al-Ayn); she will be higher in status and more
beautiful. If a righteous woman from among the people of this world enters Paradise, then she
will do so as a reward for her righteous deeds and as an honor from Allah to her for her religious
commitment and righteousness. As for the houri who is one of the delights of Paradise, is an
immortal woman, who does not age. She speaks softly and does not raise voice at her man; she is
always reconciled with him. Having been brought up in luxury, she is a luxury herself, she has
only been created in Paradise for the sake of someone else, and has been made the reward for the
believing man for his righteous deeds. There is a great difference between one who enters
Paradise as a reward for her righteous deeds and the one who was created as a reward for one
who did righteous deeds. The former is a queen and a princess, and the latter, no matter how
beautiful she is, is undoubtedly lower in status than a queen, and she (houri) is subject to the
command of her believing master (man) for whom Allah created her as a reward.

The main reason why the Quran and Hadith are stressing the fact that men will get Houris (Hoor
al-Ayn) is because it more appealing to men than promising virgin men to women. Men are more
sexually active and therefore are facing a lot of difficulty (especially in the teenage years) to
remain chaste. There are a lot of temptations in this world. That is why that Allah keeps
promising these virgin girls to those that remain patient and steadfast. That way, this motivates
the unmarried men to remain chaste and be patient because they know they have something
better waiting for them in the next life. As if they do not get it legally in the next life then they
would get it illegally in this life.

Now with all these proofs you can easily invalidate the argument made by some non-muslims
that women will not get any benefits out of the Islamic Paradise. The men and women are equal
in the sight of Allah (SWT) except for those whom are more pious. Just because they're equal
doesn’t mean they're exactly the same. They have physical, mental and emotional differences.
Men have superiority over women in certain aspects such as physical strength, while women
have more superiority over men from a caring and nurturing perspective. In the same manner,
like our differences, they may have rewards that are different from one another, but that in no
way suggest inequality. For instance, if you want to reward your son for something, perhaps
you'll let him play a video game for example, whereas if you want to reward your daughter,
perhaps you'll let her invite her friend over, or buy her something nice.

Therefore, men and women have different needs and wants so obviously rewards would differ.
But overall the rewards for both men and women will be equal (but not same) as Allah (SWT)
says in the following verses of the Holy Quran:

"And whoever does righteous good deeds, male or female, and is a true believer in the Oneness
of Allâh (Muslim), such will enter Paradise and not the least injustice, even to the size of a
Naqîra (speck on the back of a datestone), will be done to them." [Surah An-Nisâ' (4):194]

"Whoever works righteousness, whether male or female, while he (or she) is a true believer (of
Islâmic Monotheism) verily, to him We will give a good life (in this world with respect,
contentment and lawful provision), and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the
best of what they used to do (i.e. Paradise in the Hereafter)." [Surah An-Nahl (16):97:]

Now following are some Hadiths mentioning the number of the Hoors (houris) that
Muslims will get in addition to the wives of this world in Paradise:

According to Ibn Kathir (died 1373 CE) in his Holy Quranic commentary (Tafsir) of the above
Surah Al-Rahman (55), verse 72: "The Prophet Muhammad was heard saying: ‘The smallest
reward for the people of paradise is an abode where there are 80,000 servants and 72 wives
(houris), over which stands a dome decorated with pearls, aquamarine, and ruby, as wide as the
distance from Al-Jabiyyah [a Damascus suburb] to Sana'a [Yemen]’." [Tafsir Ibn Kathir]

The Prophet Muhammad (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬said: "Every man who enters paradise shall be given
72 (seventy-two) houris; no matter at what age he had died, when he is admitted into paradise,
he will become a thirty-year-old, and shall not age any further. A man in paradise shall be given
virility equal to that of one hundred men." [Tirmizi, vol. 2 states on page 138]

Narrated Al-Miqdam ibn Ma'dikarib: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The martyr
receives six good things from Allah: he is forgiven at the first shedding of his blood; he is shown
his abode in Paradise; he is preserved from the punishment in the grave; he is kept safe from the
greatest terror; he has placed on his head the crown of honour, a ruby of which is better than the
world and what it contains; he is married to 72 wives of the maidens with large dark eyes
(houris); and is made intercessor for seventy of his relatives." [Tirmidhi:Hadith number 1067;
and Ibn Majah]

In a book by the great Imam Ghazzali (R.A.): The Prophet Muhammad (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬said
once to Jaber: "Shall I not give you the news of the windows of Paradise ? We said: 0 Messenger
of God give us that information. He said: Those are made of emeralds and jewels. Their inner
parts will be seen from their outer parts. Therein there will be such enjoyments, amusements and
joys as no eye has seen, no ear has heard and no heart has conceived. I said: 0 Messenger of God,
who will be the owners of those windows? He said: Those who spread peace, give food, keep
fasts, pray at night when the people remain asleep. We asked: 0 Messenger of God, who will be
able to do that? He said: My people will be able to do that. I am saying it to you. He who meets
his brother, salutes him and replies to his salute,' spreads peace; and he who gives food to his
wife and members of his family to their satisfaction gives food. He, who keeps fast of Ramazan
and three days every month, keeps fast as it were for the whole year. He who prays Isha and Fajr
in congregation prays as it were the whole night when the people remain asleep. God says: The
fine buildings in Eden Paradise.' The Prophet said regarding its meanings: These places are builts
of emeralds and jewels and in each building there will be 70 rooms of red colour and in each
room 70 sub-rooms of green colour and in each sub-room there will be one throne and over each
throne 70 beds of varied colours and on each bed a hoor al-ayn (houri- a girl having wide lovely
eyes with intense black irises). There will be 70 dining cloth in each room and 70 kinds of food
in each dining cloth. There will be seven girls in each room. Each believer will be given such
strength in the morning as he can cohabit with them". [Ihya Uloom Ed-Din.Volume 4, Page-
4.428]

*From above mentioned Hadith a simple calculation will show that each believer will get
343,000 wives from houris (hur al-ayn) i.e: 70*70*70 = 343,000 houris/hoor al-ayn.

Narrated from Abu Hurayra (R.A.) that the Prophet Muhammad (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬was asked: "O
RasulAllah (‫ !)صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬Will we touch our wives in heaven? He (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬replied: A
man will touch 100 virgins a day." [Tabarani, al-Mucam as-Saghir & Awsat]

Narrated from Anas (R.A.) that the Prophet Muhammad (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬said: "A believer man
will have 73 wives in heaven. We asked him (‫)صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬: Will he able to do (i.e. have sex
with all of them) this? And He (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬replied: He will be given power of 100(men)."
[Abu Na’eem Sifat al-Jannah]

Doubtless, a believer will have many houris (hoor al-ayn/hoors/hurs) in heaven which are in
addition to his wordly wives but exact number is not given. It implies that the people of Paradise
will have these wives according to their degree i.e: those who are more pious will get more wives
than others but as mentioned in the following Hadiths:

Abu ‘Umama (R.A.) reported that Allah’s Messenger (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬said: "Allah will not
admit anyone in the Paradise but Allah, the Mighty and glorious will marry him with 72 wives,
two will be from virgin (houris/hoor al-ayn) with big eyes and seventy will be his inheritance
from the people of the Hell-Fire*." Every one of them will have a pleasant vagina and he (the
man) will have sexual organ that does not bend down during sexual intercourse (perpetual
erection)." [Ibn Majah, vol.v, page 547: Hadis number 4337]

*Hashim b. Khalid says, ‘The words "out of his inheritance (due) from the denizens of the Fire"
in above stated Hadith, mean men who will enter the Fire and the inmates of the paradise will
inherit their wives just as the Faroah’s wife (Aasiah R.A.) will be inherited (by the believers).

The Prophet Muhammad (‫ )صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم‬was heard saying: ‘The smallest reward for the people
of paradise is an abode where there are 80,000 servants and 72 wives, over which stands a dome
decorated with pearls, aquamarine, and ruby, as wide as the distance from Al-Jabiyyah [a
Damascus suburb] to Sana'a [Yemen]’." [Tafsir Ibn Kathir]

So that is the minimmum what every Muslim man in Paradise will get.

Another important aspect in Paradise is that: Not just the reward but the beauty of the
people of Paradise will also go on increasing with time as mentioned in the following
Hadith:

Narrated Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "In
Jannah there is a market to which the people will come every Friday. The northern wind will
blow and shower fragrance on their faces and clothes and, consequently, it will enhance their
beauty and loveliness. They will then return to their wives who will also have increased in their
beauty and loveliness, and their families will say to them: `We swear by Allah that you have been
increased in beauty and loveliness since leaving us.' Thereupon they will reply: `we swear by
Allah that you have also been increased in beauty and loveliness since we left you.''' [Sahih
Muslim]

Bazaar, where everything will be available, free of cost. Similarly, people will gather there for a
time period equal to that of Jumu`ah (friday), as there will be no sun, nor night and day. Another
speciality of Jannah is that the beauty and charm of men and women will go on increasing and so
the love and affection between husbands and wives will also keep on progressing and increasing.
It will be just the opposite of what happens here in this world.

One Important Note (Must Read):

Some Non-Muslims point out to verses in the Qur'an, which speak about how Muslim men
would be able to have sex with the Houris in paradise. Then they exclaim that this is immorality
or fornication. However, we must pay close attention to what the Quran actually says...

Allâh (SWT) says in the Holy Quran:

"So (it will be), and We shall marry them to Houris (female fair ones) with wide, lovely eyes."
[Surah Ad-Dukhân (44):54]

"But those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism) and do deeds of
righteousness, We shall admit them to Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), abiding
therein forever. Therein they shall have Azwâjun Mutahharatun [purified mates or wives (having
no menses, stools, urine, etc.)] and We shall admit them to shades wide and ever deepening
(Paradise)." [Sura An-Nisâ' (4): 57]

The word used here is AZWAAJ. In Arabic, it means spouse. Notice, the key word, SPOUSES.
The houris (hoors/hurs) will be the wives of Muslim men in Paradise. If a man has sex with his
wife, is that fornication? No, of course not, she is his spouse. So, if a man can legitimately have
sex with his spouse here on earth, then why can't a man legitimately have sex with his spouse in
paradise.

Having said that, the gretest reward for the Muslim believers, men and women, in Jannah
(Paradise) will be to view the Countenance (Apperance) of Allah (SWT). And for the
believers there will be nothing more delightful than looking at Him;

This is mentioned in the following Hadiths:

Imam Ahmad recorded from Suhayb ibn Sinan ar-Rumi: The Messenger of Allah recited, (the
words meaning), "For those who have done good is the best and even more." [Sura Yunus, 26]
He said, "When the people of Paradise enter Paradise, a caller will say: `O people of Paradise,
Allah has promised you something that He wishes to fulfill.' They will reply: `What is it Has He
not made our Scale heavy Has He not made our faces white and delivered us from Fire?' He (the
narrater) said: "Allah will then remove the veil (from their eyes), and they will look at the
Countenance (Appearance) of Allah, the Mighty, the Majestic." He said, "By Allah, they have not
been given anything dearer to them and more delightful than looking at Him." [Tafsir Ibn Kathir,
Muslim]

Narrated Suhayb ibn Sinan ar-Rumi: The Apostle of Allah said: "When those deserving of
Paradise would enter Paradise, the Blessed and the Exalted would ask: Do you wish Me to give
you anything more? They would say: Has You not brightened our faces? Has You not made us
enter Paradise and saved us from Fire? He (the narrator) said: He (God) would lift the veil (from
their eyes), and of things given to them nothing would be dearer to them than the sight of their
Lord, the Mighty and the Glorious." [Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Number 0347]

Doubtless we, the Muslim, men and women, are promissed to have what we want in
Paradise (Jannah);

Allâh (SWT) says in the Holy Quran:

"Therein you shall have (all) that your inner selves desire, and therein you shall have (all) for
which you ask for." [Sura Fussilat 41:31-32]
"They shall have all that they will desire with their Lord. That is the reward of Muhsinûn (pious-
good doers)." [Az-Zumar (39);34]

Therefore in Paradise a Muslim, wether male or female, will have every thing that they wish for
and they will abide therein forever. So we should strive for this absolute success by doing good
and righteous deeds. There are a lot of temptations in this world (mostly created by satan) from
which we have to seek refuge with Allâh alone and fear Allâh much and abstain from all kinds of
sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden. And for that matter we have put our trust completely
in Allah (SWT).

"Verily! he (satan) has no power over those who believe and put their trust only in their Lord
(Allâh)."

"His (satan's) power is only over those who obey and follow him (satan), and those who join
partners with Him (Allâh) [i.e. those who are Mushrikûn-polytheists]." [Sura An-Nahl
(16);99,100]

"ALLAH KNOWS BEST"

Jazakallah
Your article have refreshed Imaan.

I have heard from some brother's that one who strive in the path of Allah [Daee],
will get 70,000 hur.
When Abid will look at hur first time, while entering paradise, he will become
unconscious & in the case of Daee, hur will become unconscious.
I want the correct narration of the above.
Also, the way u have listed features of Jannati man/hur, can u enlist features of
jannati women.

I am looking for article for sister's, related to virtue of house-hold work, breast
feeding, child bearing, children nurturing, taking care of home when husband is out
for dawate, etc.

Description of al-hoor al-‘iyn in the Qur’aan and Sunnah

What is the description of al-hoor al-iyn as stated in the Qur'aan and Sunnah? If a wife is
righteous in this world, what will her form or attributes be in Paradise if Allaah wills that she
should enter Paradise?.

Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly:
Pleasing the most Merciful and entering Paradise are the ultimate aim that believing men and
women should wish for. If a person departs this world having won the pleasure of Allaah, then he
will have the glad tidings of all that is good after that. When he enters Paradise he will have
delights and pleasures such as no eye has seen, no ear has heard and it has not entered the mind
of any man. He will have all that he wishes for in the best ways. Everything that he asks for will
be granted, and everything that he longs for he will get. He will never find anything to upset or
disturb him, because he is in the care of the Most Merciful, as Allaah says (interpretation of the
meaning):
“Therein you shall have (all) that your inner–selves desire, and therein you shall have (all) for
which you ask.
32. An entertainment from (Allaah), the Oft–Forgiving, Most Merciful”
[Fussilat 41:31-32]
One of the best things that people long for in the Hereafter is, for men, the women of Paradise,
namely al-hoor al-‘iyn, and for women there is an equivalent delight. By His great wisdom,
Allaah has not mentioned what the women will have as the equivalent of al-hoor al-‘iyn for men,
and that is due to modesty and shyness. How can He encourage them to seek Paradise by
mentioning something that they are too shy and modest to mention or speak about themselves?
So He has simply hinted at it, as in the verse (interpretation of the meaning):
“Therein you shall have (all) that your inner–selves desire
[Fussilat 41:31-32]
The description of al-hoor al-‘iyn is mentioned in more than one place in the Book of Allaah,
such as the following:
1 – Allaah says, describing the reward of the people of Paradise (interpretation of the meaning):
And (there will be) Hoor (fair females) with wide lovely eyes (as wives for Al-Muttaqoon – the”
.(pious
23. Like unto preserved pearls”
[al-Waaqi’ah 56:22, 23]
al-Sa’di (may Allaah have mercy on him)said:
“And (there will be) Hoor (fair females) with wide lovely eyes”. Al-Hawra’ is a woman in whose
eyes are lined with kohl, beautiful and bright. Al-‘iyn refers to beautiful and huge eyes. The
beauty of eyes in the female is one of the greatest signs of beauty.
“Like unto preserved pearls” means, as if they are pure, white, shining pearls, which are covered
and protected from people’s eyes, the wind and the sun. Their colour is one of the most beautiful
of colours and they have no fault or blemish of any kind. This is how al-hoor al-‘iyn are: they
have no faults of blemishes of any kind, rather they are beautiful in all ways.
Every time you gaze upon her, you see nothing but that which gladdens the heart. End quote.
Tafseer al-Sa’di, p. 991
2 – Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“(In beauty) they are like rubies and coral”
[al-Rahmaan 55:58]
al-Tabari (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
Ibn Zayd said concerning the words “they are like rubies and coral” it is as if they are rubies in
their purity and like coral in their whiteness. So their purity is that of rubies and their whiteness
is that of pearls. End quote.
Tafseer al-Tabari, 27/152
3 – Allaah says describing the women of Paradise, in Soorat al-Waaqi’ah (interpretation of the
meaning):
“Verily, We have created them (maidens) of special creation.
36. And made them virgins.
37. Loving (their husbands only), (and) of equal age”
[al-Waaqi’ah 56:35-37]
Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
With regard to the word “loving (‘uruban)”, Sa’eed ibn Jubayr said, quoting from Ibn ‘Abbaas
that it means: they are loving towards their husbands. It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas that
al-‘urub are those who love their husbands and their husbands love them.
With regard to the word “of equal age (atraaban)”, al-Dahhaak said, quoting from Ibn ‘Abbaas,
that it means: of the same age, thirty-three years.
Al-Saddi said: “atraaban” means that they are equal in temperament and they do not resent or
envy one another, i.e., they are not like hostile co-wives. End quote.
Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 4/294
Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar said:
It was narrated that Mujaahid said concerning the verse “Loving (their husbands only), (and) of
equal age”: i.e., those who are dear to their husbands.
Fath al-Baari, 8/626
4 – Allaah says, describing them (interpretation of the meaning):
“Therein (Gardens) will be Khairaatun–Hisaan [fair (wives) good and beautiful]”
[al-Rahmaan 55:70]
Ibn al-Qayyim said:
They are described as being fair and beautiful. The word khayraat (fair and good) is derived from
the word khayyarah, which refers to the woman who combines all good qualities, both outward
and inward, and whose physical appearance and attitude are perfect. So they are good in attitude
and fair of face.
Rawdat al-Muhibbeen, p. 243.
5 – Allaah describes them as pure, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“and they shall have therein Azwaajun Mutahharatun (purified mates or wives), and they will
abide therein forever”
[al-Baqarah 2:25]
Ibn al-Qayyim said:
Allaah describes them as pure: “and they shall have therein Azwaajun Mutahharatun (purified
mates or wives)”, pure from menses, urine and the like (stools) and all off-putting features that
may exist in the women of this world. And their hearts are pure from envy, annoyance of their
husbands, meanness or wishing for husbands other than them.
Rawdat al-Muhibbeen, p. 243, 244
6 – Allaah describes them as refraining from looking at anyone except their husbands
(interpretation of the meaning):
“Wherein both will be Qaasiraat–ut–Tarf [chaste females (wives) restraining their glances,
desiring none except their husbands]”
[al-Rahmaan 55:56]
“Hoor (beautiful, fair females) guarded in pavilions”
[al-Rahmaan 55:72]
Ibn al-Qayyim said:
Allaah describes them as being “guarded in pavilions”, i.e., they are prevented from making a
display of themselves before anyone except their husbands. They are guarded for their husbands
and they do not go out of their houses, and they restrain themselves for them and do not desire
anyone else. And Allaah describes them as “Qaasiraat–ut–Tarf [chaste females (wives)
restraining their glances”. This description is more complete than the first, for one of them
restrains her gaze and focuses her love upon her husband, she is content with him and does not
look beyond him at anyone else.
Rawdat al-Muhibbeen, p. 244
This is a brief look at what has been said about them in the Qur’aan. In the Sunnah there are
descriptions of their beauty and fairness which defy the imagination, such as the following:
1 – It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of
Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The first group will enter Paradise
looking like the moon on the night when it is full, and those who follow them will be like the
brightest shining star in the sky. Their hearts will be as one, and there will be no hatred or
jealousy among them. Each man will have two wives from among al-hoor al-‘iyn, the marrow of
whose calves can be seen from beneath the bone and flesh.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, no. 3014;
Muslim, 2843.
Ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
The stunning beauty of the hoori is such that the marrow of her calves can be seen from beneath
her clothes, and a man will be able to see his face in the liver of one of them, like a mirror
because of the fineness of her skin and the purity of her colour.
Fath al-Baari, 8/570
2 – It was narrated that Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah
(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If a woman from among the people of
Paradise were to look out over the earth, she would illuminate everything that is in between
them, and would fill everything that is in between them with fragrance. And the scarf on her head
is better than this world and everything in it.”
If she were to show her face, it would shine between heaven and earth; how beautiful is the light
of her face and how beautiful the scent that is filling the space between heaven and earth. As for
her garments, the scarf that she places on her head is better than the beauty of this world and all
that is in it of delights and pleasure and natural beauty and splendid palaces and other kinds of
luxuries. Glory be to their Creator, how great He is, and congratulations to the one for whom she
is and he is for her.
Secondly:
The situation of the believing woman in Paradise will be better than the situation of the hoor
al-‘iyn; she will be higher in status and more beautiful. Several ahaadeeth and reports have been
narrated concerning that, but none of them can be proven to be sound. But if a righteous woman
from among the people of this world enters Paradise, then she will do so as a reward for her
righteous deeds and as a honour from Allaah to her for her religious commitment and
righteousness. As for the hoori who is one of the delights of Paradise, she has only been created
in Paradise for the sake of someone else, and has been made the reward for the believing man for
his righteous deeds. There is a great difference between one who enters Paradise as a reward for
her righteous deeds and the one who was created as a reward for one who did righteous deeds.
The former is a queen and a princess, and the latter, no matter how beautiful she is, is
undoubtedly lower in status than a queen, and she is subject to the command of her believing
master for whom Allaah created her as a reward.
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked: Does the description of the
hoor al-‘iyn include the women of this world?
He replied:
It seems to me that the women of this world will be better than the hoor al-‘iyn, even in outward
appearance, and Allaah knows best.
Fataawa Noor ‘ala al-Darb.
We ask Allaah the Almighty to give us the best of that which He gives to His believing slaves.
And Allaah knows best.
How Many Wives Will The Believers Have In Paradise?

Wa `alaykum as-Salam wa rahmatullah:

The stronger hadiths indicate that the Believers shall have two wives, in Bukhari
and Muslim from Abu Hurayra, from the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace:
“Each man among them shall have two wives, the marrow of each of the two wives'
shanks will be seen glimmering under the flesh, and there is not in all Paradise a
single unmarried man.” They will have up to a hundred concubines in Paradise while
the Shuhada’ shall have seventy-two wives, numbers indicating abundance rather
than an exact quantity, and Allah knows best.

Some texts:

1. Al-Miqdam ibn Ma`dikarb said, Allah be well-pleased with him: The Messenger of
Allah said, upon him blessings and peace:

“For the Shahid in the Divine presence there will be six qualities: [1] he will be
forgiven from the first moment his blood is spilled; [2] he shall see his seat in
Paradise and be protected against the punishment of the grave; [3] he shall be safe
from the Greatest Terror [the rising of the dead]; [4] he shall be crowned with the
diadem of dignity, one ruby of which is worth more than the entire world and its
contents; [5] he shall be coupled with seventy-two spouses from the wide-eyed
maidens of Paradise; and [6] he shall be granted to intercede for seventy of his
relatives.” Ahmad and al-Tirmidhi narrated it and the latter said: “This is a fair,
sound, single-chained hadith” (hasan sahih gharib).

2. Anas said, Allah be well-pleased with him: The Messenger of Allah said, upon him
blessings and peace:

“The servant in Paradise shall be married with seventy wives.” Someone said,
“Messenger of Allah, can he bear it?” He said: “He will be given strength for a
hundred.” Abu Nu`aym in Sifat al-Janna, al-`Uqayli in the Du`afa’, and al-Bazzar in
his Musnad.

2a. From Zayd ibn Arqam, Allah be well-pleased with him, when an incredulous Jew
or Christian asked the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, “Are you claiming
that a man will eat and drink in Paradise??” He replied: “Yes, by the One in Whose
hand is my soul, and each of them will be given the strength of a hundred men in
his eating, drinking, coitus, and pleasure.” Ahmad, al-Nasa’i in the Sunan al-Kubra,
Ibn Abi Shayba, Ibn Hibban, and al-Hakim who declared it sahih.

Note that the Jews succeeded in “disappearing” all notion of a next life from their
religion while the Christians succeeded in making it an ethereal abstraction. The
Mu`tazila and other minority sects went that path also as do those who deny the
reality of the punishment and reward of the grave, Hellfire, the Prophet’s Basin, the
Bridge, the Balance, the Vision of Allah Most High etc.

3. Abu Sa`id al-Khudri said, Allah be well-pleased with him: The Messenger of Allah
said, upon him blessings and peace:

“The humblest of the People of Paradise shall have eighty thousand servants and
seventy-two wives. A palace of pearl and peridot(a: A pale green variety of
chrysolite; used as a gemstone) and sapphire shall be erected for him as wide as
the distance between al-Jabiya [a valley about 70 kms. East of Makka] and San`a’
[in Yemen].” Al-Tirmidhi and Ahmad narrated it.

4. Abu Hurayra said, Allah be well-pleased with him: The Messenger of Allah said,
upon him blessings and peace:

“The humblest of the People of Paradise in rank shall have seven levels and as he
will be on the sixth, below the seventh, he will have three hundred servants, every
morning and evening three hundred dishes of gold shall be brought before him,
every dish carrying something the other does not. He will taste pleasure as sharply
with the first dish as he will with the last. He shall say, ‘My Lord! If you gave me
permission, I would feed all the people of Paradise and water them from what I have
and nothing should go missing from it.’ He will most certainly have seventy-two
wives from the wide-eyed maidens of Paradise, the couch of only one of whom is as
wide as a square mile on earth.” Ahmad narrated it in the Musnad.

5. Abu Umama said, Allah be well-pleased with him: The Messenger of Allah said,
upon him blessings and peace:

“None is made to enter Paradise by Allah Most High except Allah Most High shall
marry him to seventy-two wives, two of them from the wide-eyed maidens of
Paradise and seventy of them his inheritance from the People of Hellfire, not one of
them but her attraction never lags nor his arousal ever wanes.” Narrated by Ibn
Majah, Ibn `Adi in the Kamil, and al-Bayhaqi in al-Ba`th wal-Nushur. Al-Suyuti
marked its chain as “fair” (hasan) in al-Jami` al-Saghir (§7989).

6. Ibn Abi Awfa said, Allah be well-pleased with him: The Messenger of Allah said,
upon him blessings and peace:

“Every man from the People of Paradise shall be married off to four thousand
virgins, eight thousand slave-girls, and one hundred wide-eyed maidens of Paradise.
They shall all meet him within every seven days. They shall say with their exquisite
voices no creature has ever heard the like before: ‘We are the everlasting women,
we never grow old, we are the refined women, we never grow sour, we are the ever-
pleased women, we never anger, we are the sedentary ones, we never travel away,
blessings to him who is for us and we are for him!’” Abu al-Shaykh in al-`Azama and
al-Bayhaqi in al-Ba`th wal-Nushur.

7. Hatib ibn Abi Balta`a said, Allah be well-pleased with him: I heard the Messenger
of Allah say, upon him blessings and peace:

“The believer in Paradise shall be married off to seventy-two women, seventy

women of the hereafter and two women of the women of this world.” Narrated by
Ibn al-Sakan in Ma`rifat al-Sahaba and Ibn `Asakir in Tarikh Dimashq.

8. Abu Hurayra said, Allah be well-pleased with him:

It was asked, “Messenger of Allah, do we reach our women in Paradise?” He replied,

“A man will reach in a single day one hundred virgins.” Al-Tabarani in al-Saghir and
al-Awsat, Abu Nu`aym in Sifat al-Janna, and al-Khatib in Tarikh Baghdad. Abu Dya’
al-Maqdisi declared it sahih according to Ibn al-Qayyim in Hadi al-Arwah and Ibn
Kathir in al-Fitan wal-Malahim and so did Khaldun al-Ahdab in Zawa’id Tarikh
Baghdad (§100).
9. Ibn `Abbas narrated something similar. Abu Ya`la in his Musnad with a good chain
as indicated by al-Haythami in Majma` al-Zawa’id.

10. Jabir said, Allah be well-pleased with him: I heard the Messenger of Allah say,
upon him blessings and peace:

“I entered Paradise and saw that most of its dwellers were women.” Narrated by al-
Bayhaqi in al-Ba`th wal-Nushur and Ibn `Asakir in Tarikh Dimashq.

May Allah grant the highest levels in Paradise to this mercied Umma for the sake of
the Most Honored Being in the Divine Presence, our liege-lord Muhammad, upon him
and his Family and Companions blessings and peace.

Hajj Gibril

In Islam, the 'ḥūr' or 'ḥūrīyah' () are described as "(splendid)[1] companions of equal age (well-
matched)[2]", "lovely eyed"[3], of "modest gaze"[4], "voluptuous",[3] "pure beings" or "companions
pure" of paradise, denoting humans and jinns who enter paradise after being recreated anew in
the hereafter.[6] There are graphical descriptions of physical pleasures in heaven. Islam also has a
strong mystical tradition which places these heavenly delights in the context of the ecstatic
awareness of God.[7]

Etymology
Classical Arabic Usage

According to classical Arabic usage in the time when the Qur'an was recited by Muhammad,
'Hur'in' is made of two words 'Hur' and 'In'. The word 'Hur' is the plural of both Ahwar
(Masculine) and Hawra (Feminine) which literally translates into persons distinguished by
Hawar, signifying "intense whiteness of the eyeballs and lustrous black of the pupils." (ref:
Qamus ), hence 'the purity' (ref: Tafsir al'Tabari, and Tafsir al-Razi in 3:52). And as for the
phrase, "In it is the plural of both 'Ayan' (Masculine) and 'Ainao' (Feminine)",[40] it was used to
refer to the beautiful eyes of the wild-cow whose eyes are blond. In general, this word implies
'most beautiful eye' irrespective of the person's gender. Thus, the most appropriate English
endering of the compound word 'Hur'In' will be: '"Companions pure, most beautiful of eye."' [41]
and it is applicable to both male and female.[42]
European Usage

The word "houri" has entered into several European languages (French - 1654, English – 1737)
with a meaning of a "voluptuous, beautiful, alluring woman"[43][44]
'Houri as Whore' Misconception

The English word "whore" (Danish "hore", Swedish: "hora", Dutch: "hoer", Gothic: "hors",
Proto-Germanic: "khoron", Indo-European: "
★ gar") comes from an original meaning of "lover" and is not etymological related to the Arab
non-indo-European word "houri"[45][46]
Mention
Qur'an

The houries are mentioned several places in the Qur’an (Koran), although in plural no specific
number is given to the amount of houries available. Likewise it does not appear from the Qur’an
that only girls should be available; both sexes are mentioned. And they are made available to all
Muslims, not just martyrs.
:'"Thus shall it be. And We shall pair'(''zawajnahoom'': pair them, marry them). Note ''zawj'' (lit.,
“a pair” or - according to the context - “one of a pair”) applies to either of the two sexes, as does
the transitive verb ''zawaja'', “he paired” or “joined”, i.e., one person with another)[47]'them with
companions pure, most beautiful of eye."'''[Chapter (Surah) Ad-Dukhan (The Smoke)(44):54]''[48]
:'"In these [gardens] will be mates of modest gaze' [''qasirat at-tarf'': Lit., “such as restrain their
gaze”, i.e., are of modest bearing and have eyes only for their mates (Tafsir Razi). This phrase
applies to both genders.[4]]', whom neither man nor invisible being will have touched ere then."'
''[Chapter (Surah) Ar-Rahman (The Most Beneficent(55):56]''[50]
:'"[There the blest will live with their] companions pure and modest, in pavilions [splendid]'
''[Chapter (Surah) Ar-Rahman (The Most Beneficent)(55):72]''[51]
:'"reclining on couches [of happiness] ranged in rows!” And [in that paradise] We shall mate
them with companions pure, most beautiful of eye' ''[Chapter (Surah) At-Tur (The
Mount)(52):20]''[52]
Here is verses that refer to one’s ''spouse'' renewal to a pure state :
:'"And [with them will be their] spouses, raised high: for, behold, We shall have brought them
into being in a life renewed, having resurrected them as virgins' ''[Chapter (Surah) Al-Waqi'a
(The Event)(56):34-36]''[53]
:'And among His wonders is this: He creates for you mates out of your own kind '[''min
anfusikum azwajan'', Lit. “from among yourselves mates (spouses, one of the pair)”]' so that you
might incline towards them, and He engenders love and tenderness between you: in this, behold,
there are messages indeed for people who think! … And He it is who creates [all life] in the first
instance, and then brings it forth anew: and most easy is this for Him, since His is the essence of
all that is most sublime in the heavens and on earth, and He alone is almighty, truly wise.'
''[Chapter (Surah) Ar-Rum (The Romans)(30):21…27][54]
Here is verses regarding both genders explicitly:
:'God has promised the believers, both men and women' (Lit., ''waalmuminoona'' (male believers)
''waalmuminatu'' (female believers), 'gardens through which running waters flow, therein to
abide, and goodly dwellings in gardens of perpetual bliss: but God's goodly acceptance is the
greatest [bliss of all] -for this, this is the triumph supreme!' ''[Chapter (Surah) At-Taubah (The
Repentance) (9):72]''[55]
:'As for anyone - be it man or woman' [Lit., ''min'' (from) ''thakarin'' (male) ''aw'' (or) ''ontha''
(female)][16:97]' - who does righteous deeds, and is a believer withal - him shall We most certainly
cause to live a good life, and most certainly shall We grant unto such as these their reward in
accordance with the best that they ever did.' ''[Chapter (Surah) An-Nahl (The Bee) (16):97]''[56]
A verse regarding ''other'' companionship:
:'“And, O our Sustainer, bring them into the gardens of perpetual bliss which Thou hast promised
them, together with the righteous from among their forebears, and their spouses, and their
offspring - for, verily, Thou alone art almighty, truly wise' ''[Chapter (Surah) Ghafir (The
Forgiver)(40):8]''[57]
Hadith

Also the Islamic traditions (Hadith) mentions the houries. Although it should be noted that
Muslims don’t find all hadits equally trustworthy.
Al-Bukhari

Muhammad al-Bukhari (810 - 870) was a famous Sunni Islamic scholar most known for
authoring the most authentic hadith collection named Sahih Bukhari

★ ''"[E]veryone will have two wives ([in a version of this hadith[58]: ''waa li kul-li wa ahidin
minhoom zawjataani'' = and to every single (everyone) among them ''zawjataani''. The expression
''kulli wa hadin''-each one (everyone) includes both males and females. Note: the feminine
ending -at(un) (feminine ta-marbuta, -ah in modern Arabic language) is also added to distiguish a
person in an exemplary manner as in allamun = scholar, allamatun (-ah) = distinguished scholar
[not "female scholar"], or as in ''rawin'' = narrator, ''rawiyatun''(-ah) = narrator(of poems) [not
"female narrator"]. These forms ending in -at(un) (modern -ah), as they designate the individual,
are treated as masculines.][59][zawjatan: dual connotation (Classical Arabic Idiom - which can be
used to refer to two different things calling them by the same name: two paired persons or things
can be expressed by the dual of one of them (eg. ''abawaani'' [dual of ''aba'' (father)] = parents
(father and mother, not "two fathers"; ''qamarani'' [dual of ''qamar'' (moon)] = sun and moon (not
"two moons")[60]; usage in "''Qur'an in Surah Al-Furqan(25):53''" ''bahrayn'' [dual of ''bahr'' (sea)]
= sea "''salty and bitter''" and river "''sweet and thirst-allaying''" (not "two seas"); sometimes the
word with the female gender is chosen to make the dual form, such as in the expression "''the two
Marwas''", referring to the two hills of ''As-Safa'' and ''Al-Marwa'' (not "two hills, each called Al-
Marwa") in Mecca[61];) ( (i.e. Husband - zawj and wife -zawjah can be referred as zawjatan in the
dual form)][62] from the houris, (who will be so beautiful, pure and transparent that) the marrow of

"The Beginning of Creation", Hadith 476)[5])

★ ''"They will not urinate, relieve nature, spit, or have any nasal secretions. Their combs will be
of gold, and their sweat will smell like musk. The aloes-wood will be used in their centers. Their
wives will be houris. All of them will look alike and will resemble their father Adam (in statute),
sixty cubits tall."'2829
Muslim

Imam Muslim (810 - 870) was a famous Sunni Islamic scholar most known for authoring the
authentic hadith collection named Sahih Muslim

★ Muhammad (Ibn Sirin) reported that some (persons) stated with a sense of pride and some
discussed whether there would be more men in Paradise or more women. It was upon this that
Abu Huraira reported that Abu'l Qasim (the Holy Prophet) (may peace be upon him) said: The
(members) of the first group to get into Paradise would have their faces as bright as full moon
during the night, and the next to this group would have their faces as bright as the shining stars in
the sky, and 'everyone will have two wives ' (or Husband - zawj and wife -zawjah can be referred
as zawjatan in the dual form)][59][60]''(houris: inferred from Sahih Muslim, hadith 6795 through
another chain of narration)'' and the marrow of their shanks would glimmer beneath the flesh and
there would be none without a wife in Paradise. (Sahih Muslim, Book 40 “Pertaining to Paradise,
Its Description”, Hadith 6793)[6]
Al-Tirmidhi

Al-Tirmidhi (824 - 892) was a medieval collector of hadiths, not all authentic.

★ Al-Hasan Al-Basri says that an old woman came to the messenger of Allah and made a
request, O’ Messenger of Allah make Dua that Allah grants me entrance into Jannah. The
messenger of Allah replied, O’ Mother, an old woman cannot enter Jannah. That woman started
crying and began to leave. The messenger of Allah said, Say to the woman that one will not enter
in a state of old age, but Allah will make all the women of Jannah young virgins. Allah Ta’aala
says, Lo! We have created them a (new) creation and made them virgins, lovers, equal in age.
(Surah Waaqi’ah, 35-37). [65]

★ ''"[Muhammad] was heard say: "The smallest reward for the people of Heaven is an abode
where there are eighty thousand servants and seventy two wives, over which stands a dome
decorated with pearls, aquamarine and ruby, as wide as the distance from [Damascus] to
San'a"''[66].(''This hadith has a weak chain of narrators'')[67]

★ ''"A houri is a most beautiful young woman with a transparent body. The marrow of her bones
is visible like the interior lines of pearls and rubies. She looks like red wine in a white glass. She
is of white color, and free from the routine physical disabilities of an ordinary woman such as
menstruation, menopause, urinal and offal discharge, child bearing and the related pollution. A
houri is a girl of tender age, having large breasts which are round (pointed), and not inclined to
dangle. Houris dwell in palaces of splendid surroundings."''[68]
Ibn Maja

Ibn Maja (824 - 887) was a medieval hadith collector, not all authentic. His collection is named
the Sunan Ibn Maja.

★ ''"Houris do not want wives to annoy their husbands, since the houris will also be the wives of
the husbands in the afterlife. "Mu’adh bin Jobal (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah’s
Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘A woman does not annoy her
husband but his spouse from amongst the maidens with wide eyes intensely white and deeply
black will say: Do not annoy him, may Allah ruin you.” He is with you as a passing guest. Very
soon, he will part with you and come to us."''[69][70]
Sahaba

The sahaba were the companions of Muhammad.

Abu Huraira

Abu Huraira mentions houri between a dispute of if there were more women or men going to
paradise.[71]
Abu Ubayda

Abu Ubayda said that the recreated women of this life referring to
:'"We have created [their Companions] of special creation, and made them virgin-pure [and
undefiled after their old age in this life]' (Qur’an, Surah Al-Waqia(56):35-36)
were mentioned in the previous verse:
:'"And Hur (fair females) with wide lovely eyes. Like preserved pearls."'(Qur'an, Surah Al-
Waqia(56):22)
quoted by Ibn Kathir in his ''Tafsir'' (Koranic Commentary) of Surah Waqia (56), ayah (verse)
35-36[72]
Damrah bin Habib

Artat bin Al-Mundhir said:

:"Damrah bin Habib was asked if the Jinns will enter Paradise and he said,''`Yes, and they will
get married. The Jinns will have Jinn women and the humans will have female humans.''
quoted by Ibn Kathir in his ''Tafsir'' (Koranic Commentary) of Surah Rahman (55), ayah (verse)
56:
:'"In these [gardens - paradise] will be mates of modest gaze, whom neither man nor invisible
being [Jinn] will have touched them then [after they have been created again]."'[73]
Tabi'een

The Tabi'een are generation of Muslims who were born after the death of Muhammad but who
were contemporary of the Sahaba.
Al-Hasan Al-Basri

Al-Hasan Al-Basri said that the word houri implies the righteous women among mankind who
are rewarded with paradise as related in the Tafsir of Tabari quoted by Muhammad Asad in his
tafsir "Message of Quran" [74] concerning the following ayah:
:'"We have created [their Companions] of special creation, and made them virgin-pure [and
undefiled after their old age in this life]' (Qur’an, Surah Al-Waqia(56):35-36)
Ibn Sirin

Ibn Sirin mentions Abu Huraira using houri to solve a dispute of whether there are more women
or men going to paradise.[71]
Qur'an commentators
Tabari

Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari mentions that all righteous women, however old and decayed they
may have been on earth, will be resurrected as virginal maidens and will, like their male
counterparts, remain eternally young in paradise.[76]
Ibn Kathir

Ibn Kathir says that the houri "are delightful virgins of comparable age who never had sexual
intercourse with anyone, whether from mankind or Jinns, before their husbands." [77] by
commenting,'''"in the other life, after they became old in this life, they were brought back while
virgin, youthful, being delightfully passionate with their husbands, beautiful, kind and
cheerful."''' [72]
Qurtubi

Al-Qurtubi reconciled between the hadith of making the majority of the habitants of Hell and
Paradise women by suggesting that the women that will form the majority in hell will be among
the sinners that will stay there temporarily and will be brought out of Hell and enter Paradise.
Thereafter the majority of the people of Paradise will be women.[79]
Razi

Fakhr al-Din al-Razi observes that inasmuch as a person’s eye reflects his soul more clearly than
any other part of the human body in Qur'an 52: 20.[80]
Round/Swollen breasts
In relation to the mention of virgins in Quran, several translators like Hilali-Khan[81], Arberry,
Palmer, Rodwell and Sale have translated to refer to "swelling breasts" [82][83]
In addition, Ibn Kathir, in his tafsir, writes that verse in the Qur'an describes the physical
attributes of the women. He says the following about the verse: "''This means round breasts.
They meant by this that the breasts of these girls will be fully rounded and not sagging, because
they will be virgins, equal in age.'".[84].
Alternative Interpretation

It should be noted that the original wording in Arabic is 'ً‫( ' َوكَوَاعِبَ َأتْرَابا‬Transliteration:
'WakawaAAiba atraban')[78:33]
Muhammad Asad has said regarding the above verse:

As regards my rendering of kawa’ib as "splendid companions", it is to be remembered that the

term '''ka'b''' -from which the participle ka’ib is derived - has many meanings, and that one of
these meanings is '"prominence"', '"eminence"' or '"glory"' (Lisan al-Arab); thus, the verb
'''ka'ba''', when applied to a person, signifies '"he made [another person] prominent"', '"glorious"'
or '"splendid"' (ibid.) Based on this tropical meaning of both the verb ka'ba and the noun ka'b, the
participle ka'ib has often been used, in popular parlance, to denote '"a girl whose breasts are
becoming prominent"' or '"are budding"' hence, many commentators see in it an allusion to some
sort of youthful "female companions' who would entertain the (presumably male) inmates of
paradise.[2]

Then he continues:

...this interpretation of kawa’ib overlooks the purely derivative origin of the above popular usage
- which is based on the tropical connotation of '"prominence"' inherent in the noun '''ka'b''' - and
substitutes for this obvious tropism the literal meaning of something that is physically prominent:
and this, in my opinion, is utterly unjustified. If we bear in mind that the Qur'anic descriptions of
the blessings of paradise are always allegorical, we realize that in the above context the term
kawa’ib can have no other meaning than '"glorious [or "splendid"] beings"'[2]

Sex in paradise
Ibn Kathir mentions Muhammed saying that men in heaven would have sex with one hundred
virgins in one day.[87] In another version of the hadith, Muhammad is reported to have said''"In
Paradise, the believer will be given such and such strength for women." Anas said, "I asked, `O
Allah's Messenger! Will one be able to do that' He said, '"He will be given the strength of a
hundred (men)"'.'' [87]
Some companions of Muhammad are reported to have said that men in heaven will be "busy in
deflowering virgins"[89]. Ibn Kathir says that the houri "are delightful virgins of comparable age
who never had sexual intercourse with anyone, whether from mankind or Jinns, before their
husbands." [77] by commenting,'''"in the other life, after they became old in this life, they were
brought back while virgin, youthful, being delightfully passionate with their husbands, beautiful,
kind and cheerful."''' [72]
Imam Suyuti is reported to have said, "each time we sleep with a houri we find her virgin.
Besides, the penis of the Elected never softens. The erection is eternal; the sensation that you feel
each time you make love is utterly delicious and out of this world and were you to experience it
in this world you would faint. Each chosen one [ie Muslim] will marry seventy [sic] houris,
besides the women he married on earth, and all will have appetising vaginas."[92]
In another place, Ibn Kathir emphasises the literal nature of sexual intercourse in Paradise by
another Hadith:
"The Prophet was asked : 'Do we have sex in Paradise?' He answered: 'Yes, by him who holds
my soul in his hand, and it will be done dahman, dahman (that is intercourse done with such
shove and disturbance[93]). And when it is finished she will return pure and virgin again.'"[94]

Alternative Interpretations

Ibn Kathir relates concerning the following verses:

:'Verily, the dwellers of the Paradise, that Day, will be busy with joyful things. They and their
wives will be in pleasant shade, reclining on thrones. They will have therein fruits and all that
they ask for.'''[Chapter (Surah) Ya Seen (O Thou Human Being)(36):55-57]''[95]
Although Ibn Kathir relates the opinion of some companions of Muhammad being reported to
have said concerning '"will be busy with joyful things"' that means in heaven people will be
''"busy in deflowering virgins"'', he continues to relate other alternate meanings. Another
companion, Ibn Abass has said that it refers ''"listening to stringed instruments"''[89]. Others such
as Al-Hasan Al-Basri and Isma`il bin Abi Khalid have said, ''"they will be too busy to think about
the torment which the people of Hell are suffering."'' Qatadah implied ''"with the delights which
they are enjoying."'' Ibn Abas said, ''"this means that they will be rejoicing."''. While Mujahid
said, ''"Their spouses,('will be in pleasant shade') means, in the shade of trees."''Ibn `Abbas,
Mujahid, `Ikrimah, Muhammad bin Ka`b, Al-Hasan, Qatadah, As-Suddi and Khusayf said,
''"beds beneath canopies."''[95]
"72 Virgins"
The concept of 72 virgins in Islam refers to an aspect of paradise. In a collection by Imam at-
Tirmidhi in his "Sunan" (Volume IV, Chapters on "The Features of Heaven as described by the
Messenger of Allah", chapter 21: "About the Smallest Reward for the People of Heaven", hadith
2687) and also quoted by Ibn Kathir in his ''Tafsir'' (Qur'anic Commentary) of Surah , it is stated
that:
"It was mentioned by Daraj Ibn Abi Hatim, that Abu al-Haytham 'Adullah Ibn Wahb narrated
from Abu Sa'id al-Khudhri, who heard the Prophet Muhammad saying, 'The smallest reward for
the people of Heaven is an abode where there are eighty thousand servants and seventy two
houri, over which stands a dome decorated with pearls, aquamarine and ruby, as wide as the
distance from al-Jabiyyah to San'a.[98]

Popularisation

A CBS news report in 2001 contained a translation of a Hamas activist which specifically
mentioned the term "72 virgins". Since then, the term has been widely used in the western world
by critics of Islam.
Interpretations

Margaret Nydell states that mainstream Muslims regard this belief about 72 virgins in the same
way that mainstream Christians regard the belief that after death they will be issued with wings
and a harp, and walk on clouds.[99]
Another interpretation of the relevant passages of the Qur'an is ''The Syro-Aramaic Reading Of
The Qur'an'' written by Christoph Luxenberg. In respect of this particular point, Luxenberg
argues that the relevant passage actually translates to a portrayal of paradise as a lush garden
with pooling water and trees with rare fruit, including ''white raisins'' (considered to be delicacies
at the time that the Qur'an was written), not virgin maidens.[100][101]
Notable uses of the term

While being disarmed by the Israeli troops in 2004, would-be suicide bomber Hussam Abdo,
described by Israeli media as a "mentally challenged" boy, said: "Blowing myself up is the only
chance I've got to have sex with 72 virgins in the Garden of Eden."[102]
Criticism

Regarding the above statement, Hafiz Salahuddin Yusuf has said: "The narration, which claims
that everyone would have seventy-two wives has a weak chain of narrators."[67]
