The Playa Grande Spa sits adjacent to the Main House, The geometry of the Spa is broadly sugges-
tive of formations like naturally eroded rock or strange ruins. A closer reading reveals a carefully
controlled unification of the 6 discrete volumes via inverting readings of symmetry, continuity, align-
ment, tangency.

“In the most diagrammatic sense, the Retreat House is simply the expression of a court-
yard parti. The evolved form is a drifting ring that shifts in plan and section just below
the jungle’s canopy. The roof is a ruled surface requiring over 200 scissor trusses.

With its formally charged interiors, the new theater on the roof challenges the
notion of a minimalist black box for a performance space. A new plaster tech-
nique has been used to create an evocative space which performs well acousti-
cally by selectively absorbing and diffusing sound.

“There is a conflict in the aesthetics of the cut flower. It is a living thing purposely severed and
put on display through the abstraction of a vase. A flower vase has three primary objectives. The
first is to hold water suspending the flower’s death. The second, to position or pose the flower in
a particular gesture. And lastly, to disappear, allowing the flower to be the prime figural focus“

“The dualist mode of thinking in contemporary architectural profession for the building and ground
relationship fluctuates between either disguising the building with natural elements and creating a
fake sense of the natural, or undermining the ground by fetishizing the figure. Our proposal sits in

“Izka would reevaluate the concept of the public, in terms of sharing and common. The atrium
homes the public functions by coiling them around vertically from the auditorium on the base-
