(at bottom link “Goodies”)

The program screen is divided into a upper third containing “General” info and the main part beneath (“Meridian
Transformations”) featuring the application of that on the four limbs.

“General” part:
There you will find 4 boxes with the following informations:
 Seasonal / Day time references
 12 Meridian infos
 8 Trigram infos
 64 Gua (hexagrams of I Ging) infos

 To the upper left there is a box for Seasonal Acupuncture.

Placing the mouse pointer over the time / date in the first line
( without clicking ) will update them.
By actually clicking on the first line´s time / date field in the second line there will be shown the season / day´s
time according to the current time or date. This information is referenced depending on whether “CC” (Chinese
Calendar) or “WC” (Western Calendar) is chosen. Changing the “CC/WC” – field automatically resets the
season / day´s time field to the first entry “spring”.
You may freely choose among season / day´s time – entries without manipulating any other field by that.

 In the Meridian box you can choose between the 12 main meridians.
The second line from above shows the according 5 element
reference ( please notice that the meridian´s Elements are somehow
different in the way that they are referenced according to Dr. R.
Tan´s style derived from Ba Gua: e.g. San Jiao is wood, not fire!).
Furthermore the meridian axis ( e.g. Shao Yang for San Jiao – me-
ridian ) and the time in the organ clock are listed.
Beneath this text line the hexagram of the meridian is pictured:
next to each Yao (single bar of the 6 bar – hexagram) there is the
according acupuncture point of the chosen meridian (most distal
points are always closest to the bottom).
 In the upper third´s center there is the Trigram box.
Your choice is between the 8 trigrams of the Ba Gua. The number next
to them are re–used for Gua – numbering in the I Ging following
Dr. R. Tan´s style ( not in the common I Ging! ). The field in the upper
line has the sequence: number, chinese trigram name, english trigram
name.
The second line shows the according 5 Element reference and the Yin– or
Yang– quality of the trigram. Beneath there´s the picture of the trigram.

 The probably most interesting box of the General part is the Gua box.
In the center of the box the I Ging hexagram of the Gua number
is pictured. Above you can set the tens and unit place of the Gua
number, which is a second time listed to the right followed by the
rating of the Gua number:
- minus means to be avoided in Seasonal Balance
some are "neutral" (have no special rating)
* 1 star means the sum of the hexagram´s bars equals 9
*** 3 stars means Yin/Yang mirroring and sum of 9
The Guas with star ratings tend do be the more useful ones. For a
complete list of the Guas to be avoided see the field at the bottom
left of the Gua box: choosing a value there resets the Gua box with
the entry.
Important notice: The Gua numbering follows the modern and very logical system by Dr. R. Tan. He simply splits up the
hexagram of the Gua number in a upper and a lower trigram. The number then is build up by combing the lower trigram´s
number in the tens place with the upper trigram´s number in the unit place. This is different to the common Gua numbers
which are therefore shown in the field at the very top right of the Gua box. You can choose a common Gua value there which
will reset the Gua box with this entry.
Directly beneath the hexagram picture is a smaller written info for the more mathematical minded ones: Each hexagram can be seen as a
binary number. There are two ways to see them, both build the number from the bottom: listed first is the Yang way which sees the (unbro-
ken) Yang Yaos as 1 in the binary system, then the Yin way is shown which treats the (broken) Yin Yaos as a 1. Both Yin and Yang together
always sum up to be 63 (as counting starts with 0).
In the right middle of the Gua box the hexagram is shown in terms of 5 Elements. There the hexagram is split up
in two trigrams: an upper Yong Gua over an lower Ti Gua. Each of those two are listed with their element and Yin/
Yang – quality.
In the middle to the very right border you see what the manipulation of the Yong Gua over the Ti Gua means:
Sheng nourishing cycle
Ke controlling cycle
Chocolate both upper and lower trigram are the same Element
As the Yong Gua and the Ti Gua can each have there own Yin/Yang – quality there´s a further info shown:
= both trigrams have the same Yin/Yang – quality
± the trigrams have a different Yin/Yang – quality
You can build up your "own" hexagram from the current trigrams: Click on either the upper Yong Gua – trigram´s
or the lower Ti Gua – trigram´s text info to set the basis from where the hexagram´s other trigram shall be changed
(e.g. in the box above in this manual you would either click on "Earth Yin" or "Metal Yang" to set it as the basis).
Then at the field to the very right border of the Gua box select in which way the trigrams shall influence each other
according to the element cycle. For easier reading there are arrows showing the direction of influence: either from up
">" / to down or vice versa up gets influenced by / "<" down. Furthermore the text rotates differently in each case.
Having chosen an appropriate hexagram you can move the Gua to one of the 4 quadrants = limbs in the lower
"Meridian Transformations" part of the screen. Simply click on one of the limbs of the small person in the lower
right of the Gua box and the Gua information/energetics will be moved there. [Vice versa the Gua information in
the Gua box can be reset with the value of the Gua of one of the 4 limbs by clicking on the Gua number shown there
in the quadrants.]
"Meridian Transformations" part:
Here you will find 4 quadrants that you can treat as 4 limbs or simply 4 different meridians you can play with.
The program offers you both and even more possibilities:
The box titled "Meridian Transformations" to the very left has a field to choose at the very top section:
* no link between meridians, all meridians on each limb
X diagonal Dynamic Balance, i.e. Yin/Yang cross–over
– horizontal Dynamic Balance, i.e. Yin/Yang up–down
| vertical Dynamic Balance, i.e. Yin/Yang left–right
The three latter options offer fewer meridians per limb as only the energetically logic=correct ones are
shown (they all use some kind of Dynamic Balance). You could say that option #1 is to play around,
#2 will be used most times and the other two options are for special swap techniques.

 Choose Global Balance or Meridian Modules

In the center of the screen there is a field to choose between pre–defined
Global Balance – systems or Meridian Modules. This field is only visible
if such a system is possible due to the chosen restrictions resulting from
the displayed meridians (see choosing Dynamic Balance in the paragraph
above).
Selecting an entry of the kind "Global Balance" will override the existing meridians in all 4 limb quadrants. Select-
ing a "Meridian Module" will change only either the right or left half of the limb quadrants (which half it is depends
on the individual Yin/Yang – polarity of each side, the program will figure that out by itself ). A Meridian Module
is a set of two meridians balancing each other by system #2 or #4, and are placed here on top of each other. Picking
such modules makes it easier to play around with individual Global Balance – systems; each Global Balance – system
is built by two Meridian Modules.
Whatever limb has been changed – if the transformation method in a limb is set to "Element/Gua" then the chosen
Gua won´t be changed, so that Element combinations or Seasonal Balances stay untouched.

 Switch left–right
The information of the right and left half can be switched by clicking on the dou-
ble–arrow field in the center of the screen (beneath the "Global Balance/Meridian
Module" selection field). All settings including chosen Meridians, transformation
methods including Element combinations or Seasonal Balances get exchanged.

There are 4 quadrants around a central cross structure that represent the 4 limbs of the body. Each quadrant features
the same possibilities as follows:
 At the beginning you should select the Source Meridian to be modified. This is the ( in this program one and only )
meridian on each limb you choose to treat and manipulate in a certain way. The number of meridians to select
from differs between 3 and 12 depending on whether you chose a Dynamic Balance or free choice of meridian
linking (see beginning of Meridian Transformations section).

 The next step is to decide in what way you want to manipulate or transform the Source Meridian. This
transformation method can be:
Meridian : The source meridian will be transformed into another meridian.
or
Element / Gua : The source meridian will be influenced by Element or Gua energetics.

Depending on your choice either all or only some fields will be shown / active in the limb quadrant. This is
because by the method of transforming a source meridian to a destination meridian no Seasonal Balance can be
applied and furthermore no Yao – changing will be possible at the pictured destination Gua.
No matter in which transformation method there will be shown the Element influence of the transformation.
This is true also for "Meridian" transformation as we need to recognize that even the transformation of a Source
Meridian to a Destination Meridian can be seen in terms of Element influencing ( in this case always a "chocolate"
relation ). Changing an Element in transformation method "Meridian" will cause a switch to "Element / Gua"
mode.

 The Destination field changes its look depending on the transformation method field as described in the
paragraph above. It´s either a Destination Meridian for Global Balance or a Destination Gua for 5 Element /
Seasonal Balance that can be selected. After selection the illustrated Destination Gua will be updated and the type
of transformation and acupuncture points to be stimulated will be calculated.
In the case of Destination Gua the field looks somewhat like this:
This means you can select the tens and unit place of the Gua individu-
ally. In the tens place to the left not only the number (1 to 8) but also the associated season to this number is
shown. The season "Dojo" are 4 transition seasons between the other 4 known ones.
Please notice that the Gua value of the Destination field is always inter–linked and of same value as the Gua
number with star rating in the center of the limb quadrant as well as the value of the Destination Elements listed
below.

 The Destination Elements are shown as one Element ( Yong Gua = Application Gua )
on top of the other one ( Ti Gua = Body Gua ).
Of these two Elements the upper Yong Gua forms the unit place,
the bottom Ti Gua forms the tens place of the resulting Gua number.
The Destination Elements are shown also in Meridian transformation method to make aware that in the back-
ground there´s some chocolate 5 Element transformation going on as well. If you change an Element of this
field while in Meridian transformation method then the transformation method will be switched to "Element /
Gua".

 The Destination Gua number including its star rating (see paragraph "Gua box" for more info about
the star rating) is shown centrally in each limb quadrant. Clicking with the mouse button on this field
will reset the Gua value of the Gua box (upper right in the program window) to the current Gua number of the
limb.

 Each limb quadrant shows two I Ging pictures: To the left there´s the bar illustration of the
Source Gua – which is the Source Meridian to be modified chosen for this limb quadrant.
Depicted is simply the picture of the Meridian symbolized by two identical Guas on top of each
other. You can change this peace of information via selecting a Source Meridian as described above
at the beginning of the limb quadrant section.
 The Destination Gua illustration is always the right one of two I Ging pictures. It can be formed in 3 ways: by
selection of a ...
Destination Meridian: the Destination Gua illustration is the picture of the Destination Meridian you chose
for this limb quadrant. In this case the illustration is not interactive and can´t be changed by clicking on it.
Only the choice of the Destination Meridian influences its bar setting.
Destination Gua number: the Destination Gua illustration is the picture of selected I Ging symbol.
Destination Element combination: the Destination Gua illustration is the picture of one Element ( Yong Gua =
Application Gua ) on top of the other one ( Ti Gua = Body Gua ).
In both latter cases ( selection via Destination Gua or Element ) the Destination Gua illustration has a special
feature – it´s interactive: By clicking on the central part in each of the 6 lines of the Gua you can change the
Yin / Yang – quality of the Yao (= bar). This means when the limb quadrant is in transformation method
"Element / Gua" you can freely draw your Destination Gua! Toggling the Yin / Yang – quality of one Yao will
change the whole Destination Gua. Due to that all information about the Gua (i.e. number and star rating,
Elements, Season) as well as the transformation type of Source to Destination Gua and point result will be
updated automatically.

 In line with each Yao (= bar) of the Source and Destination Gua illustration there´s the
resulting point of the transformation. It will be shown whenever a difference in the
Yin / Yang – quality of the two Yaos makes an activation of the resulting point necessary (otherwise no transfor-
mation would be done). Consequently if Source and Destination Gua are the same there are no resulting points.

 Above the Source and Destination Gua illustration there´s a text line indicating the type of transformation ( either
a classical I / IV or III / VI or an irregular one ) and the resulting points (here in one line with the most distal
point to the left and the most proximal one to the right side). If the Source and Destination Gua are the same this
line tells you "Source & Destination Gua equal".

 If the transformation method in the limb quadrant is set to "Element / Gua" there´s
a special help provided: In the bottom part of the quadrant you will find
Seasonal Balance suggestions.
By clicking on the symbol at the very right of this field ( the form depends on your computer system – Mac is
prettier than Windows ) you open up a list of useful Seasonal Guas. The season this is based on depends on
the one you selected via the tens place of the Gua number in the limb quadrant:
In the seasons Autumn, Spring and Transition / Dojo there are 2 possibilities each for the tens place
of the Gua number: then the list will contain useful Guas of both ones.
Each line of the list gives the following information:
Gua number – star rating ( if appropiate ) – Source Meridian abbreviation – resulting points
You can select an entry and set the Gua number of the limb quadrant with the chosen Seasonal Gua. As always
all the other linked information fields will be updated.

 You can influence the way the list of useful Seasonal Guas is sorted by the field directly right to the field with the
Seasonal Balance suggestions. There are 3 options:
# sort by Gua number only
* sort by best star rating first, second priority is the Gua number if star rating is equal
. sort by least point quantity, second priority is the Gua number if point quantity is equal
 The Balance method
The Source Meridians of the 4 limb quadrants are connected to each other by Balance methods.
They can be found in the cross–like structure between the 4 limb quadrants. All six possible
links between the 4 quadrants show the information in the following way:
The Balance method is encoded in number "1" to "7" – following the system from Dr. R. Tan expanded by
another method called system #7. This program uses a kind of "smaller version" of system #7: it´s not derived from
the Ba Gua symbols as the system #7 presented by Ilan Migdali. Instead it bases on the balance of up–down AND
Yin–Yang inside the same circuit of meridians[ there are 3 circuits of meridians in the body: Lu–Li–St–Sp,
He–Si–Bl–Ki, Pc–SJ–Gb–Lv ]. There are no contradictions to system #7 presented by Ilan Migdali, but the double–
branchings of his system are not integrated.
If no known Balance method exists on the link between two Source Meridians a point "." is shown:
For some pairs of Source Meridians there are overlappings of Balance methods. If this applies the
program will show that as seen in the example to the upper right in this manual: "1=5"
The program not only passively recognizes by what Balance method(s) a pair of Source Meridians is connected. You
can also actively apply a Balance method by selecting another method via the same field. Only in the linking mode "no
link" (see beginning of "Meridian Transformations" section in this manual) you can choose between all theoretically
possible Balance methods. If you chose some form of Dynamic Balance the selection will be restricted to the practically
possible Balance methods.
Please be aware of the arrow that is placed always to the left / beneath of the selection field. This arrow always aims
away from the Source Meridian that shall be balanced to the limb where the balancing Destination Meridian will
be displayed ( the program does this by updating the Source Meridian field of the limb quadrant being aimed at ).
Clicking on the arrow toggles its direction.

 The truss
As a result of all Balance methods used between the 4 limb quadrants a truss is formed that can be seen in
the very center of the 4 quadrants. Each link between the limbs with an appropiate Balance method forms a bar of
the truss. So the truss mirrors the strength of the Static Balance formed by the Source Meridians of the 4 limbs.
