Question 3
Read about 5 tips on a good night’s sleep below. Then, answer questions (a) – (j).
Tip 1 : Most adults need on average between seven and nine hours a night, while others need less
hours of sleep.
Tip 2 : Rather than the clock striking 12, we should look to our internal biological clock’s idea of
midnight. This ‘biological midnight’ happens not at 12am, but somewhere between 3am and 4am.
This ensures that a greater proportion of the night’s deep-sleep phases – where our recovery
processes are especially effective – happen before this low point.
Tip 3 : To ensure a good night’s sleep, keep your bedroom temperature at around 18°C. However,
use blankets or a hot water bottle as being too cold can prevent you from getting a good night’s
sleep. That doesn’t mean you should shut the windows tight, though, as stale air with lower levels
of oxygen will tend to disturb the restorative effect of sleep.
Tip 4 : Being physically tired helps you to sleep well. Yet exercise serves to stimulate the body and
increase body temperature, so exercising just before you go to bed is not a good idea. Allow your
body to rest for at least two hours after exercise before going to bed.
Tip 5 : Despite the fact that many people nod off while watching TV, the truth is that the sound and
flickering light reach the brain even after we have fallen asleep, preventing us from achieving
healthy deep sleep. Devices such as laptops, tablets and phones are even worse. They make
noises and give off light and you’re tempted to check them.
(b) To get a good night’s sleep, we should shut the window tight. ………………… (1 mark)

NEWSBREAK
But surely you’re some stranger,
Now why so loving, darling, No rage or hullabaloo.
And why the sudden kiss? Come closer, let me look, dear,
You’d help me with some little jobs? Can this be REALLY you?
For goodness sake, what’s this?
Now were you struck by lightning
Your face is clean for once, dear, Or were you stunned at sport?
Your clothes without a crease. Ah … now I see the reason.
You saved your luncheon money? You’ve brought your school report!
Will wonders never cease?

Hi, I am Nursarah. I have several friends at school . Some are my schoolmates and some are my
classmates . However the best among them is Arrisa, who is my classmate.
Arissa is a fair, pretty girl with dimpled cheeks and comes from a respectable family. She is of my
age but is much taller than I am. She and I first met at kindergarten and we became great friends.
She is kind, jolly and helpful. We are classmates again this year and we go to school together each
morning.
Arissa is very neat and clean in her dress. She likes wearing a white blouse, a long skirt and black
shoes. Her clothes are always costly but never showy. Her dress gives her a respectable look. It
shows that she is not foppish at all.
Arissa likes to joke and play games. She lives near my house. In the evenings, we usually meet at
my house. We sit in the garden and read story books. Sometimes, when my parents go out in the
evening, she comes over to keep me company and we watch television together. That way I do not
feel lonely.
My best friend is very good in her lessons especially at Mathematics. She never neglects her studies.
In the last examination she stood second in the class but was the best scorer in English and
Mathematics. So, whenever I find difficulties in my Mathematics homework, I would ask her to help
me.
Arissa is active and smart. She is good at both studies and games. No wonder she is loved by all the
teachers. She is frank and honest. She also helps her parents in the house with the chores. She
never wastes her time at home or school.
Arissa is a girl of excellent moral character. She is expected to be a great lady in the years to come.
All her good qualities have attracted me. I hope Arissa and I will be in the same class again next year.
I like her very much and she is my best friend.
