P R E S I D E N T O F C O R P U S C H R I S T I WAT E R S H E D
On the Solemnity of the Epiphany in 2007, the work of Corpus Christi Watershed
officially began. Throughout, it has been a labor of prayer and trust, and a casting
of our nets into the deep waters: Duc In Altum (Lk 5:4). The labors become
especially worthwhile when we discover that we have made a successful catch,
which is to be found in the following Eucharistic Motets: they truly are a bountiful
catch for the Church and I trust will serve the Lord by inspiring and capturing the
attention of many souls who hear this music. Kevin Allen is a brilliant artist and a
living treasure for the Church. It is an honor for us to begin our commission of
publishing books of new liturgical music with him as our first artist in this field.
In order to communicate the message entrusted to her by Christ, the Church needs art.
Art must make perceptible, and as far as possible attractive, the world of the spirit, of the
invisible, of God. It must therefore translate into meaningful terms that which is in itself
ineffable. Art has a unique capacity to take one or other facet of the message and
translate it into colours, shapes and sounds which nourish the intuition of those who
look or listen. (Par. 12)
These motets, set so beautifully by Kevin Allen, are an excellent example of such
art that the Holy Fathers have called artists to create. We are mindful of The
Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium: “The musical
tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even
than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as
sacred song united to the words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn
liturgy” (Par. 112). Artists such as Kevin Allen are the truly awaited fruits of the
inspired teachings of the Second Vatican Council. His music lives and breathes
within the living reality of the Church's liturgical traditions. It is at one and the
same time ever ancient and ever new, for the beauty of his melodic lines and
harmonization reflect something of the larger celestial beauty of the Beatific
Vision. This is the noble call of the sacred artist who is called to touch these
heavenly realities through the humble offering of his art that is faithful to the
Church and her sacred liturgies.
We have included numerous features in the publication that give flexibility for the
singer, for example we have Latin/English Psalm tones owing to the fact that the
Church desires the use of Latin during the sacred liturgy, but also allows for
English, and some choirs may not yet be ready for the Latin. The English Psalm
tones are a translation of the Latin, and are a good way for choir directors to begin
helping the choir and congregation to understanding the Latin, as the Church
wishes.
We took great care to have no page turns during individual pieces, and have set
Kevin Allen's music in appropriately beautiful fonts and scripts with clearly
written typesetting that enables ease of singing. We also have included faithful
translations of the Motets themselves. Any sacred musician can use this music to
help improve the liturgical life of parishes, schools, seminaries and religious
institutes. Watershed is offering this book of compositions at a reasonable price so
that many people may have the gift of accessing this beautiful new work.
Kevin Allen is a truly gifted composer by any standard of place or time. His vocal
lines are stunning and flow with a natural beauty that is truly universal and
profound in scope. As a living artist, he avoids the easy temptation of taking for
his model the commercialism of secular musical trends that are fleeting and
lacking in suitability for truly dignified liturgical worship. Instead, Kevin places
himself under the inspiration of masters such as Victoria and Palestrina. His
preferred composer as a model is Orlando Lassus, and Kevin Allen finds a sure
place in this inspired tradition.
Those who choose to perform these pieces with mixed choirs may appreciate the following pitch
suggestions. It will be noticed that sometimes the Psalm verses require no transposition. Some choirs may
choose to have the men and women alternate (one group singing the Latin, and the other singing the English).

videos for this collection, and Corpus Christi Watershed has made these videos
available online for free, to help choirs learn these beautiful pieces.
