Experiment of Heat of Neutralization

AIM: Determine ΔHn for the reaction between Sulphuric Acid and Sodium Hydroxide.
1) Using a burette, place 25cm3 of 2 moles per dm3 Sulphuric Acid into a calorimeter.
2) Using a burette, place 50cm3 of 2 moles per dm3 Sodium Hydroxide into a beaker.
3) Allow the acid and alkali to reach room temperature. Measure the temperature of
both solutions using thermometers. Record this as the initial temperature.
4) Quickly add the alkali to the acid and mix the two solutions.
5) Using a thermometer measure the highest temperature of the reaction.
6) Using the example above, calculate ΔHn for the reaction.

Experiment of Heat of Solubility

AIM: Determine ΔHs for the reaction between Water and Potassium Nitrate.
1) Using a burette place 50cm3 of Water into a calorimeter.
2) Allow the water to obtain a sturdy temperature. Measure and record this
temperature.
3) Weigh approximately 8g of Dry Potassium Nitrate. Record the exact mass of the
solid weighed.
4) Add the solid to the water all at once. Stir until all the potassium nitrate has
dissolved. Measure the lowest temperature achieved.
5) Determine ΔHs for 1 mole of Potassium Nitrate.
Experiment of Enthalpy of Combustion
AIM: Determining ΔHc for ethanol.
1) Fill a small spirit burner with ethanol.
2) Weigh and record the initial mass of the spirit burner.
3) Place 100cm3 of water in a copper can.
4) Set up the apparatus as in the diagram.
5) Measure the initial temperature of the water.
6) Light the spirit burner and allow it to burn for 15 minutes.
7) Measure the highest temperature of the water in the can.
8) Reweigh the spirit burner.
9) Calculate ΔHc for 1 mole of ethanol.
