1.

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has declared a trade war with its closest
allies. Though it was done by a legal way, the United States is bullying other countries that have
to suffer the negative consequences of the U.S.’s decision.
2. The connections i can make between this text and other text i have read is that government can
take drastic measures to get what their nation needs.
3. The author’s purpose is to inform about the President’s newest economic decision:
disappointed, negotiations, tough-on-trade, etc.
4. The audience is anyone who is concerned about how the government’s decisions affect the
homefront and foreign countries.
a. I know this because the title describe this topic which would only be read by people who are
interested in this topic.
b. The choice of audience affects the text because it uses sophisticated jargon that is connected to
the topic.
5. The most relevant details that the author uses to argue their position are the effects that the
other countries go through due to President Trump’s decision.
6. LOGOS
a. “The administration says the new tariffs will keep China from avoiding existing tariffs by
shipping its products through other countries. Yet, it has provided little evidence that China does
that. Some Chinese steel is sent to the United States after it has been reprocessed in third
countries, but that is a legal practice”(Barczyk).
“The president is also effectively isolating the United States from its closest allies — the very
countries it needs to work with to put pressure on China to change its economic policies.
Even the Aluminum Association, which represents most American-based producers of the metal,
said it was “disappointed” by Mr. Trump’s decision”(Barczyk).
“Mr. Trump’s bullying appears to be pushing voters in at least one country toward more
extremist leaders. In Mexico, Mr. Trump’s combative attitude appears to be helping the leftist
presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador ahead of a July 1 election. Many experts
fear that Mr. López Obrador has authoritarian tendencies and could undermine democracy in
Mexico if he becomes president”(Barczyk).
b. The author exercises their credibility by stating that they are part of a credible news source
team.
7. A possible theme for this text would be that when countries are greedy, they are quick to
betray even their closest allies.

8. This text helped me understand the topic addressed by giving me the cause and the effect of
the problem or situation.
9. Something I would change from the text would be the language used to express the ideas. If it
explains what the political terms mean, then the general audience will understand the message of
the text easier.
10. OPTION #2: Though some people may say that loyalties between countries will never break,
it is clear that it can happen when one country is greedy and seeks for their own benefits. “The
president is also effectively isolating the United States from its closest allies — the very
countries it needs to work with to put pressure on China to change its economic policies.
Even the Aluminum Association, which represents most American-based producers of the metal,
said it was “disappointed” by Mr. Trump’s decision”(Barczyk). Even if the United States does
not formally declare a war with arms, it can declare a trade war: it has done this with its closest
allies. When the President saw that taking this decision would greatly benefit the United States,
he took it not thinking about the other countries who would suffer because of it.
