QUESTION PAPER SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS

Please read each of the following instructions carefully before attempting questions :

Answer must be written in ENGLISH only.

There are EIGHT questions divided in TWO sections.

Condidate has to attempt FIVE questions in all.


Questions no. 1 and 5 are compulsory and out of the remaining THREE are to be attempted choosing at
least ONE question from each section.

The number of marks carried by a question / part is indicated against it.

Answers must be written in the medium authorized in the Admission Certificate which must be stated
clearly on the cover of this Question-cum-Answer (QCA) Booklet in the space provided. No marks will be
given for answers written in a medium other than the authorized one.

Wherever any assumptions are made for answering a question, they must be clearly indicated. Diagrams
/ figures, wherever required, shall be drawn in the space provided for answering the question itself.

Unless otherwise mentioned, symbols and notations carry their usual standard meanings. Attempt of questions
shall be counted in sequential order. Unless struck off, attempt of a question shall be counted even if
attempted partly. Any page or portion of the page left blank in the Question-cum-Answer Booklet must be
clearly struck off.

1. (b) A 4 pole, 50 Hz induction motor has 24 stator slots with 2-layer winding. It has 16-
turn coils chorded by one slot. The machine is delta connected and connected to a 440
V, 3-phase supply. If the stator resistance and leakage reactance are assumed negligible
find the flux/pole of the rotating flux density wave.

1. (d) A 6 pole, 50 Hz induction motor (3-phase) running on full load develops a useful torque
of 160 N-m and the rotor emf is absorbed to make 120 cycles/min. Calculate the net
mechanical power developed. If the torque loss in windage and friction is 12 N-m, find
the copper loss in the rotor windings, the input to the motor and efficiency given:
Stator losses = 800 W (inclusive of core loss).

(ii) The switch in below figure has been closed for a long time. The fuse is a special
type of resistor that overheats and melts if the current through it exceeds 1 A for
more than 100 ms. The resistance of the fuse is 3 m . If the switch is opened at
t = 0, will the fuse blow?

2. (c) A 220V, 50 Hz, 4-pole, single-phase Induction motor has the following circuit model
parameters:

The rotational losses of the motor are estimated to be 75 W. At a motor speed of 940
rpm, determine the line current, the power factor, the shaft power and the efficiency.

3. (a) What are the different types of losses occuring in rotating machines. Explain in detail:

3. (b) A 3-phase bank consisting of three single phase-3 winding transformers  Y /  / Y  is


employed to step down the voltage of a 3-phase, 220KV transmission line. The data
pertaining to one of the transformers is given below :

Ratings : Primary 1 : 20 MVA, 220 KV; secondary 2 : 10 MVA, 33 KV.

Tertiary 3 : 10 MVA, 11 KV

Short-circuit reactances on 10 MVA base : X12 = 0.15 pu, X23 = 0.1 pu, X13 = 0.2 pu.
Resistances to be ignored.

The  -connected secondaries supply their rated current to a balanced load at 0.85 pf
lagging, whereas the tertiaries provide the rated current to a balanced load at upf
(constant resistance).

(i) Compute the primary line-to-line voltage to maintain the rated voltage at the
secondary terminals.

(ii) For conditions of part (i) find the line-to-line voltage at the tertiary terminals.

(iii) If the primary voltage is held fixed as in part (i), to what value will the tertiary
voltage increases when the secondary load is removed?

3. (c) What are the different types of Addressing modes in 8085 microprocessor. Explain
with examples:

4. (a) After being closed for a long time, the switch in the circuit of given figure is opened
at t = 0.

4. (b) A voltage of  200sin t  50sin3t  is applied to a 250 turns transformer winding


having negligible resistance and leakage reactance. Deduce an expression for the flux
and find its maximum value. By what percentage will the eddy current loss in the iron
be reduced if the applied voltage is altered to 200sin t .    100

4. (c) A 30 kW, 440 V, 50 Hz, 3-phase, 10 pole, delta connected squirrel cage induction motor
has the following parameters referred to a stator/phase:

5. (a) A 4A current source, a 20  resistor, and a 5 F capacitor are all in parallel. The
amplitude of the current source drops suddenly to zero (becoming a 0A current source)
at t = 0.

At what time

(i) the capacitor voltage is dropped to one half of its initial value.

(ii) the energy stored in the capacitor dropped to one half of its initial value.

5. (b) A 3 phase induction motor runs at a speed of 1485 rpm at no load and at 1350 rpm
at full load when supplied from a 50 Hz, 3-phase line.

(i) How many poles does the motor have?

(ii) What is the % slip at no load and full load?

(iii) What is the frequency of rotor voltages at no load and full load?

(iv) What is the speed at both no-load and full load of

(a) the rotor field with respect to rotor conductors,

(b) the rotor field with respect to the stator and

(c) the rotor field with respect to stator field

5. (c) Consider a key pad with eight keys marked 0 through 7. It is interfaced with an 8085
up based controller. Each key is associated with a function that the controller carries
out when the key is pressed. Whenever any key is pressed, an encoder associated with
the keypad gives an 8-bit binary output corresponding to the key pressed. Assume the
address of the port to which the keypad is connected as OAH. Write an assembly
language programme to implement this:

5. (d) The two cages of a 3-phase, 50 Hz, 4-pole, delta connected induction motor have
respective stand still leakage impedances of (2+j8) and (9+j2)  phase. Estimate the
gross torque developed;
(i) at standstill, the effective rotor voltage being 230 V/phase
(ii) At 1450 rpm when the effective rotor voltage is 400V/phase. The rotor quantities
given are all referred to the stator; the stator impedances are negligible.
What is the gross starting torque if a star delta starter is used:

(ii) The efficiency.

(iii) The voltage at the terminal of high voltage side.

(ii) In the given network, switch S is opened at t = 0, the steady state having
established previously. With switch S open, draw the transform network for analysis
on the loop basis representing all elements and all initial conditions. Write
transform equation for current in the loop.

7. (b) (i) The maximum efficiency of a 500 KVA, 3300/500 V, 50 Hz, single phase transformer
is 97% and occurs at 75% full load unity pf. If the impedance is 10%. Calculate
the regulation at full load 0.8 pf lagging.

(ii) Find the eddy current loss in a 50 Hz transformer core with a maximum density
of 1 Wb/m2. The core of section 8 cm × 6 cm and total effective length of 50 cm
is constructed of laminations of thickness (uninsulated) of 0.04 cm, having a
resistivity of 25 Ω-cm . The space factor is 0.9
