Single –phase AC-AC Converters with Resistive-Inductive load

1 . A resistive/inductive load is supplied from a 240 V, 50 Hz supply via inverse- ,

parallel connected thyristors. If the load impedance is 20 ohms and θ = 40 degrees
and the triggering angle is 60 degrees derive an expression for the current flowing
through each thyristor and determine their conduction angle.
[ Ans= 152° ]

2. Two thyristors are connected in anti-parallel for the voltage control of a single-
phase, series R-L load of phase angle θ to sinusoidal currents of supply frequency.
If the thyristors are each triggered at angle after their respective anode voltage
(a) Calculate the extinction angle for θ = 60º and α =120º waveforms (α >θ).
(b) Sketch the load voltage waveform and calculate its Fourier coefficients a1, b1,
c1, and ψ1 for the fundamental (supply frequency) component.

3. A series R-L load of phase angle 45° is controlled by a pair of symmetrically

triggered thyristors connected in inverse-parallel.
(a) Sketch a curve showing, approximately, the relationship between fundamental
load voltage and thyristor firing angle.
(b) Is it valid to compute the load power at an arbitrary firing angle α in terms of
fundamental load voltage squared? Discuss some of the implications.

4. A pair of thyristors connected in inverse-parallel is controlled so as to gate at

identical points of their respective anode voltages. This device controls the flow of
current through a series R-L load having a phase- angle of 30◦. The supply voltage is
given by v = Vm sinωt
(a) Sketch one cycle of the load voltage waveform v (ωt) for a firing angle α = 90◦.
Indicate on your diagram the extinction angle β at the end of the completed
conduction interval. Estimate, roughly, the conduction angle β-α.
(b) Calculate, from first principles, an expression for the half-wave average value of
. the load voltage.
(c) The coefficient a1 is given by

Where x = β , the current extinction angle.

Derive an expression for the corresponding coefficient b1 in terms of α and β.

5. The three-phase bidirectional AC controller shown in Fig. 1 supplies a wye-
connected resistive load of R=20Ω and the line-to-line input voltage is 400V (rms),
50Hz.

(a) Determine the output power Po for firing angles : α= 30˚, and α = 120˚.
At what angle minimum power is transferred from source to load?
(b) Calculate the input power factor PF at α= 30˚.
(c) Give two applications of such a converter.

Note that:

Where Vo = r.m.s load voltage per phase.

Vs = r.m.s value of the supply voltage per phase , i.e., VAN = √2 Vs sin ω t

[ Ans: (a) 7.57 kW, 1.97 kW , α = 180˚. (b) PF= 0.974 (lagging) ]

6. The input voltage to the single-phase to single-phase cycloconverter is 120V(rms),
60Hz.The load resistance is 5Ω and the load inductance is L = 40 mH . The frequency
of the output voltage is 20 Hz. If the converter is operating with a delay angle
αp =2π/3 ,
(a) Sketch the cicuit of the converter,
(b) Sketch the output voltage waveform,
(c) determine the rms value of the output voltage.
(d) determine the rms current of the load.
( e) determine the input power factor of the converter.

( Ans: (c) 53V,(d) 7.48A and (e) 0.311(lagging))
