Summary
A planning application was submitted to Blaenau Gwent County Borough

Council (BGCBC) and as part of the planning process, Glamorgan Gwent
Archaeological Trust (GGAT) advised the planning department that the
proposed work at the site could likely impact on archaeological resources.
The conditions imposed required a level II building recording survey
APAC Ltd was contacted by the client in order to undertake the program of
archaeological work.
APAC Ltd produced a project design for the work, which was approved and the
survey was undertaken.
This document is the result of a programme of archaeological work, undertaken

prior to the demolition of No 1 Cross Brook Cottage.
The survey was able to produce a photographic and documentary record of the
building providing a firm 19th century date.
The survey would suggest that no significant archaeological resources will be

disturbed during the proposed demolition.

Introduction
The building survey report has been prepared by Adam Phillips, A.P.A.C. Ltd, in response to: RE: Demolition Of
Existing Semi-Detached Cottage And Associated Outbuildings And Construction Of A New Detached Two Story
House: 1 Cross Brook Cottages, Trefil, Tredegar. PlApp.No: 2015/0181.
Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council (BGCBC) were advised in this planning application by Glamorgan
Gwent Archaeological Trust (GGAT) Archaeological Planning Services (APS):
Prior to and during demolition works, the building will need to be recorded under archaeological supervision to
“elucidate further detail on the origins of the building, information on its construction, and alteration, details of
its architectural features and history of its development”, BLG0174/JB
No site works shall be undertaken until the implementation of an appropriate

programme of building recording and analysis has been agreed with the local Planning
Authority, to be carried out by a specialist acceptable to the Local Planning Authority
and in accordance with an agreed written specification.

APAC Ltd was contracted by the client, to undertake the programme of archaeological recording work and in
accordance with the suggested model, CIFA 2014, drew up a Written Scheme of Investigation, WSI:PS/TF/16.
The written scheme of investigation was approved by GGAT as ‘fit for purpose’ allowing the survey work to
proceed.
This document is the report of the level II building recording survey.
Site location
The location of the site is to the north west of the town of Tredegar, and can be gained from the A465, ‘Heads of the
Valleys Road.
At the Tredegar roundabout on the A465 turn north onto Llwyn Helyg road and continue north, north west onto
Trefil Rd.
Upon entering Trefil take a second right, down a narrow road to 1 Brook Cottages, NGR:312172, 212608
Geology & Topography
1:50 000 scale
Polymict deposit: comprises gravel, sand and clay depending on upslope source and distance from source. Poorly
sorted and poorly stratified deposits formed mostly by solifluction and/or hillwash and soil creep. Essentially
comprises sand and gravel, locally with lenses of silt, clay or peat and organic material. In the Bristol area: red or
brown silt and stony clay with cobbles of hard rock, eg Carboniferous limestone or sandstone. Argillaceous frost-
shattered rock debris either in-situ or soliflucted. Soliflucted deposits have variable sand/clay content.
1:65 000 scale

Fine- to very coarse-grained feldspathic sandstones, interbedded with grey siltstones and mudstones, with
subordinate marine shaly mudstone, claystone, coals and seatearths. (British geological survey, BGS)
The site occupies the western slope of a shallow valley in a mixture of drystone walled enclosures and industrial
based earthworks.

Brief archaeological and historical background
The name Trefil loosely translates “farm of the lesser celandine, (Owen & Morgan p. 467, 2007).
The name itself has gone through a variant of changes “Trevill” 1600-7, “Y Truvill” 1704-7, “Trevill” 1766-9,
“Treville” 1795 and finally what we know today as “Trefil” 1832, (ibid.).
The names “Trevil Du, and Trevil glas” 1828, are the names given to the hills to the east and west of the village but
“There is no evidence of a settlement of note before industrialization in the 19th century”, (ibid.).
The Trefil limestone quarries opened in the late 18th/early 19th century and were joined via a tramroad: “The
tramroad engineered by Thomas Dadford Jnr and was completed in 1796. It brought limestone from the Trefil
Quarries to the tollhouse at Trefil Machine and from there on to the respective ironworks”. CADW REF MM339.
The small hamlet would appear to have been built for the purpose of accommodation and amenities of the quarry
workers.
The search map, fig 02, shows the concentration of both Core and Event records around the site, as provided by the
HER 5360.
The HER 5360, lists some 23 core records and 4 Events.
The HER Events record appendix I, shows that two desk based assessments have been made over the years with the
first being produced by John van Laun Associates in 1994 to elucidate the history of Trefil’s limestone quarry in the
19thc iron industry.
The second by Wessex archaeology in 1998, concerning the backfill of some of the quarry.
The other two events conclude in site visits by Blaenau Gwent 2005 and GGAT over five years 2005-2010 to gather
information on the surviving ironworks landscape.
The HER 5360 Core record appendix II, shows a list of late 18th/ 19th features, buildings and finds associated with
the surviving ironworks landscape.
The property on with this report is based, is listed as a “Post-Medieval, House, RANK: 1 SUMMARY Called Rock
Cottage on 1880 map” (06770g)
One feature to the south (06918g) describes a possible bronze aged mound “Irregular shaped grassed over mound,
c20m diameter, 2m high; although it is also noted as possibly Post medieval.
Map progressions show the beginnings of the village recorded on the earliest map of the area, “Ordnance survey 1st
series, sheet 42, 1832, scale 1.63360, fig03a.
Although not the best quality picture, a few buildings are clearly visible in roughly the right area.
By 1842 the village can be seen to slowly expand with a few more structures popping up, including that of the
property in question: Brecknockshire, Llangynidr tithe map 02/06/1842. Fig 03b
As mentioned in the written scheme of investigation WSI:PS/TF/16, the building in question and its neighbour were
once thought to have been one property.
Evidence for this can be found through maps: Brecknockshire XLV.NE 1887, fig 04a. Glamorgan VI.NE 1901, fig
04b, and Brecknockshire XLVI.NE 1922. fig 04c.
During this time the properties are known as “Rock Cottage” (note singular) the name given to the property at this
time, would suggest it to be one house hold, rather than the two “Cross Brook” cottages it is today.

Indeed, this name change would appear to have happened somewhere between the 1922 map, fig 04c, and the most
recent map “magic maps 2016” fig 04d.
During the same time period the village also expanded slightly to incorporate a few more buildings but not much
else has changed since 1922.
Aims and Objectives
The aim of the level II survey is to preserve by record the structure of the building, prior to demolition and in so
doing’ provide a facility for understanding the building’s historic development.
The record produced can then be used to guide the determination of the planning condition as to the final design of
refurbishment.
Methodology
The building recording survey followed the methodology defined in 5.2, Understanding Historic Buildings;
(Historic England 2016).
The methodology employed was also guided by the Standard and Guidance for the Archaeological Investigation
and Recording of Standing Buildings or Structures (CIFA 2014,).
Photographs were taking using tripod mounted, digital camera: Sony DSC F828 these were backed up with hi-
resolution smart phone cameras.
Images were recorded in both high resolution Jpeg & RAW formats.
The photographic record of the site includes general views of the exterior, the overall appearance of principle
structure and circulation areas, external and internal detail relevant to the property’s design and development.
All photographs include a scale rod where possible or practical.
Photographs illustrative of the survey are produced as annotated ‘photo cards’ in the report.
All photographs from the survey are included as a list with contact sheets in appendix I.
This report comprises a written element as defined in 4.5 Understanding Historic Buildings; (Historic England
2016).

Data Presentation
With no floor plan to work from A.P.A.C LTD took measurements using a Lecia Disto 2000 to produce the
measured floor plans used in this report: Plans showing floor layout fig 05 & Plans showing building phasing fig 06.
External description.
The cottage presents as a two story building with a partial remaining slate roof, and small extension to the back.

The north eastern elevation comprises of a two story build with main central entrance D1, main window W1 to the
ground floor, and a small central window, W4 in the 1st floor.
The window W4, is situated under a quickly diminishing slate roof. (PL01)
The north eastern elevation is made from a composite of lime washed un-coursed stone, with modern red brick
finished doorway.
The entrance also features a small brick extension to the left of D1.
The extension shows remains of a window, W2, and due to major dilapidation, doorway D2 from the extension into
the house is clearly visible.
The North western gable end of the house has been rendered so none of the original brick work can be seen.
Window W6 can be seen at the 1st floor level, (PL02).
The roof above room 1 and room 4 appears to level out at a different gradient than the rest of the house providing
phasing evidence.
The front of the property; its south western elevation, features rendered walls with pebble dash finish.
The main entrance is located through door D4, left of which is a large splayed window. W3. (PL03)
The south eastern gable of the property extends to the east into its neighbour, however the front elevation extends
further than its neighbour by roughly a meter. (PL04)
Internal
The house features at total of 4 main rooms, two rooms to the north east (1 and 4) and two to the south west, (2 and
3).
Room 1 features smaller offshoots, room 5 being the small modern extension mentioned above and room 6 being a
1m wide by 2.5m deep recess under the wooden stair (cwtch), to the 1st floor; in the south eastern corner. (PL05).
This recess shows the lime plastered uncoursed stonework in the wall to the left, above a concrete floor. (PL06).
To the right, the wall has been bricked up concealing what was once the possibly original access, from room 2,
under the stair. (PL07).
Room 1 also features a large cast iron fireplace with a more modern brick mantle.
The rooms ceiling is fitted with modern machined timbers covered by the boards of the 1st floor, room 4. (PL08).
The entrance at D3, between rooms 1 and 2 on the ground floor is through thick stone walls with an external batter,
normally associated with external property walls; possibly further evidence of phasing. (PL09)
There is modern fire place within room 2, north western wall; positioned central to room, under central ceiling beam
(PL10).
In room 2, the south western wall holds a large stone, internal half splayed window, W3.
The window splays to a point within the stone wall ending at the original width.
The stone walls are then encased by modern brick and rendered (and in the case of the front elevation Pebble
dashed) (PL11).
Set between W3 and D4 is a structural beam and partial room divide.
The front entrance is fitted with a wooden door and transom under a bubble glassed fanlight. (PL12).

Access to the 1st floor is gained up a wooden, carpeted flight of stairs from room 2.
The stairs have been fitted with a single brick formation partition on the ground floor, (PL13), and a wood and
plaster partition between stair and room 3 on the 1st floor.
The roof of room 3 has completely disappeared at this point, as has much of the south western wall.
In the north western gable end, a small chamfered window is present, W6 (PL15).
To the south west are the partial remains of another partially splayed internal window, W7; much like the one
directly below in room 2, ground floor, however, in this instance remains of wooden frame are present. (PL16).
From room 3 the gable end roof of the neighbouring property can be seen and it can be assumed that these
properties were once one and the same, (PL17).
The single roof structure as suggested by the remaining evidence reveals a smaller building with a possible
extension of the north eastern elevation; rooms 1 and 4.
Room 4 consists of a low ceilinged, room to the northeast of the second floor under a single pitch roof.
The room is accessed from the stair well and the doorway D5, shows the exposed walls as uncoursed stones of the
original building outer wall. (PL18).
The room features one small wooden framed window that still retains its glass, within a small blocked up hollow
within the gable wall.
This window can only be seen from inside the room as the external rendered wall shows no evidence of it. (PL19).
The north eastern wall features an internally splayed window with wooden frame.
The sill is quite low to the ground and the lintel would have extended to the lowered ceiling, making this rooms
height quite low and not in keeping with the rest of the house. (PL20)
Phasing
The house seems to have originally been a one up one down construct, built of uncoursed plastered stone and
originally the north western gable end of both the properties.
The evidence gathered to support this theory are the many changes made internally and externally throughout the
house:
The blocked in door within room 6 under the stair suggests the room once lead into room 2. (PL07).
The roof structure above room 3, is concurrent with the neighbouring property, suggesting the original structure of
the roof. (PL04) (PL21)
The roof above room 4 shows the lowering/levelling out of the roof structure between builds, not in keeping with
that of room 3.
The structural walls within doorways D3 (between room 1 & 2), (PL09) and within D5 (between rooms 3 & 4)
(PL18), are much thicker than the rest of the build suggesting that these where once external walls; further
evidenced by the wall batter of D3.
Once the building had incorporated all the rooms, the external walls to the property where surrounded by a further
layer of brick (probably as insulation), then with the case of the north western and south western walls rendered,
(PL02).
This can be evidenced through the sudden end of the deep set splays for the window before the edge of the wall.
The brick and lime plastered extension to the north eastern elevation is the latest phase of the build.

The original archive will be retained by APAC. Ltd.
Secondary archives consisting of a hard copy of the report with a digital copy of the complete data and photographs
be deposited with the County Records Office in Ebbw Vale and with The Royal Commission on Ancient and
Historical Monuments Aberystwyth.
Digital copies of the report will be forwarded to the client, planning and the HER, held by Glamorgan Gwent
Archaeological Trust.
