The ways how stability is maintained in the structure

The stability of the structure is disturbed when the equilibrium of all the external forces; self-weight of
the structure, wind forces and other imposed loads get disturbed. Stability of the structure can be
considered as,

1. Column stability and lateral torsional stability of the structure

2. Stability of the columns subjected to either compression or combined compression and bending
3. The lateral torsional stability of the beam subjected to either bending or combined bending and
compression
4. Bending stresses due to initial curvature, eccentricities and induced deflection due to any lateral
loads

Stability of the column depends on the geometry; height and cross-section, the material
properties; bending strength, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, shear modulus,
density and moisture content, end conditions, restraints(lateral) and the climate conditions.

Effective height and radius of gyration ratio (slenderness ratio) of a column affects the stability
of the column subjected to either compression or combined compression and bending (EN
1995-1-1 Clause 6.3.2). The effective height of the column depends on the end conditions (fixed-
fixed, fixed-pinned, pinned-pinned) and the radius of gyration depends on the cross-section
(circular or rectangle). When effective length reduced, and radius of gyration also reduced it
results the reduction in slenderness ratio which result the increase in stability.

So, in our structure we assumed the end condition is fixed-fixed; effective length will reduce
and choose circular columns which are theoretically more stable and better for transferring
loads to foundation. Moreover, circular cross-section is more resistant to buckling, uniform
torsion, lesser edges which enhance the stability and it gives an aesthetic view for the structure.

As our structure is in coastline, we ensure the stability of the structure for heavy sea wind load
and soil erosion. For that we designed the column with low slenderness ratio (flexural stability
of column), a roof with about ten-degree slope and the piers which is sufficient to withstand the
heavy sea wind load, other imposed loads and self-weight of the structure. And we use light
weight roof to reduce the self-weight of the structure. The foundation type we choose for our
structure is pile foundation made from treated timber. And the elevated open foundation which
protect the structure from sea water actions.

A range of different chemical treatment has been developed to enhance the durability and
serviceability of the timber. Such chemical treatment impregnated the wood cells, making them
resist from decaying, effects of insects, weather or fire.

And the stability of the structure is ensured by make sure the structure with free from any
leakages, over hanging trees and other poor workmanship.
