Important Safety Instructions
C1
Over the years serious accidents have occurred during the
erection and dismantling of rack and pinion hoists. Common to
these accidents has been the ”human factor”, i.e. non adherence
to proper safety procedures and common sense.
This document affects the personnel involved in the erection,
dismantling and servicing of such equipment.

Some examples:
Leaning over the safety railing on the car roof while the hoist is
moving upwards can cause you to be struck by a tie, counter-
weight or a cable guide.
Incomplete installation of mast bolts can cause separation of the
mast sections, leading to the fall of the car with subsequent loss
of life or serious injuries. c1

Avoid the risk of accidents by carefully studying these instruc-

tions regularly. Think clearly! Do not rush the work and always
check to make certain that the work is being done properly.
SAFETY FIRST!

Safety instructions
Local safety regulations
– All local regulations shall apply.

Weather conditions – Installation Outdoors

– Do not erect or dismantle hoists if wind speed exceeds
12.5 m/s. (28 mph) or as governed by local regulations
where more stringent.

Preparation
– Read and understand the Instruction Manual before work c2

begins.
– Barricade or rope off the area before erecting or dismantling.
– No admittance to the hoist car by unauthorized personnel
during erection or dismantling by unauthorized personnel.

Safety equipment and protective clothing

– Prescribed safety equipment and clothing such as hard hat,
safety shoes, safety belt, etc. shall be used.
– Loose fitting clothes such as scarves must not be used as
they might become entangled in moving parts.

ALIMAK 34596 - 1/01

C2 General
– Read all Warning and Instruction Signs.
– Keep the work area clean. Any oil spillage must be removed
immediately to avoid the risk of slipping.
– Never climb on the mast.
– During erection, dismantling or hoistway inspection, the hoist
must always be operated from the car roof. When working
from the car roof take precautions to avoid being struck by
mast ties, cable guides, landings, counterweight, structure
openings, etc. while hoist is moving.
– During mast erection/dismantling and when servicing a hoist
with dual cars, the main switch at the ground landing, as
well as the main switch in the car which is not being
serviced, must be switched off and locked. This in order to
ensure no accidental moving of the car.
– Before carrying out any service work, the ”Normal/Inspection”
switch in the control panel on hoist car must be placed in the
c3
”Inspection” position. This is of greatest importance
Always lock the main ”ON/OFF” switch especially for hoists with ”Auto return” or similar remote
with a padlock to prevent unintentional control function.
operation while service/inspection work
is carried out. – When the control equipment on the car roof is to be left on
temporarily during installation/dismantling or service, the
main switch in the control panel of the hoist car must be
switched off and locked in order to ensure no accidental
moving of the car.
– Under no circumstances the hoist, single or dual, shall be
driven if there is a person within the ground enclosure, on
the mast or tie.
– Complete each item of work before starting a new one or
taking a break. This is especially important when bolting
mast sections and installing ties.
c4

The main ”ON/OFF” switch must be in Mast and mast ties

the ”OFF” position before the panel – The maximum tie distance, prescribed in the manual or on
door can be opened. Installation drawing, must not be exceeded.
– Bolted joints shall always be tightened to the required torque
as prescribed by the Instruction Manual.
– If any structural damage or severe corrosion is seen on such
items as mast sections or mast ties, the hoist must be imme-
diately taken out of service and the extent of the damage be
determined and corrective action taken before the hoist is put
into service again.
– All mast accessories required to be installed on the mast
must be secured properly during installation in order to
avoid the object falling and thereby possibly causing perso-
nal injury and/or property damage.

ALIMAK 34597 - 1/01

Electrical power
C3
– Work performed on electrical equipment must be carried out
by competent personnel, trained for such work. The power
supply must be switched off and locked before work is
performed.

Sound level in hoist car

– Sound level in the hoist car during travel was measured at:
≤ 85 db(A).

Spare parts
– Unauthorized spare parts are not to be used. Only ”Alimak
Genuine Spare Parts” are to be installed.

The user’s own protective measures

Authorization of hoist personnel
A routine that guarantees continuous product training
(Authorization), that was done during the hoist installation,
must be set and maintained by a responsible person. Contact
Alimak or an Alimak representative, if this training is
required.

Preparations before installation
I1
To install your rack and pinion hoist as efficiently and safely as
possible and at lowest cost, it is important that the following
preparations be made before the erector is called and the
installation is started.
STOP
Permission
Make sure that the chosen site of erection meets the
requirements set out by local authorities for safety and
inspection and that their permission, if necessary, to install the
i1
hoist has been obtained.

Erection place
Prepare the installation site so that electric power, light, lifting
equipment and tools are available and there is adequate access
for the lift transporter – beware of overhead obstructions.
If possible, prepare for the installation of ties and landing
accessories such as supports, platforms and railing. Suitable
places for attaching the ties are vaults, balconies or other
concrete or steel structures. See applicable installation drawing.
Remember that these structures must be strong enough to absorb
the reaction forces of the ties and landing door assemblies.
All mast sections should be stored on dry firm ground and as
close to the erection place as possible.

Foundation
Prepare the foundation with parts required for fixing the base
frame of the mast. See chapter ”Foundation” in the manual
Technical Description.

IMPORTANT! i2

Make sure before casting the foundation that the measurement

between the foundation frame and the face of the hoistway
corresponds to the ties to be used.

Delivery check-up
Check the delivery against shipping lists and look for transpor-
tation damage.
Should there be any damage, report the same to the responsible
transportation insurance company within 7 days from the date
of arrival of the goods.
Other claims should be made to ALIMAK representative within
the same period. i3

ALIMAK 34733 - 1/01

I2 Arrangement of power supply
Direct On Line (DOL) starting of electric motors results in a very
high starting current. The current must overcome the resistance
in the cables which results in a voltage drop. This voltage drop
occurs not only in the trailing cables, but also in the power
supply cable installed between the jobsite distribution board and
the electric panel ”B” at the base. The total voltage drop is the
sum of the voltage drop in all the cables. The consequence of
the voltage drop is a substantial reduction in the output torque
i4
of the motor.
In order to avoid starting problems it is of the utmost importance
that the main power supply is adequately sized with respect to
the starting current and the voltage drop. The following data
should be noted:
– During starting conditions, in the upward direction with rated
load, the voltage drop must not exceed 15% of the rated
voltage when measured at the motor terminals. In the Base
panel, the voltage drop of the incoming power supply
terminals must not exceed 3% of the rated voltage during the
starting conditions.
– Once the rated speed is established during upward travel with
rated load, the voltage drop must not exceed 5% of the rated
voltage when measured at the motor terminals. In the Base
panel, the incoming power supply voltage should, in practice,
not drop at all, i.e. not exceed 1 – 2 % drop.
– Except for the above mentioned supply voltage levels
during start and running conditions, the quality of the
main power supply to the lift/hoist must be in accordance
with the requirements of EN 50160:1999.

Client’s power supply

Supply cables to hoists with DOL or Y/D starting
The 3-phase power supply cable from the jobsite distribution
board to the ”B” panel at the base can be calculated from the
formulas below. The formulas are applicable for the most common
types of hoists having 1 or 2 motor drive machinery with DOL-
starting at 400V, 50Hz and 460V, 60Hz.
Note: If an earth leakage circuit breaker, ELCB, (ground fault
f4
circuit breaker) is to be used, the trip-out value should be
chosen for equipment protection i.e. 500mA.
Use of 30mA ELCB is not recommended as it continuously
trips due to the motor starting current.

L = Length in m of the 3-phase power supply cable from the jobsite distribution board to the Base panel
For conductor sizes in AWG Nos. see conversion table below.
* In order to avoid single phasing should a main fuse blow, we strongly recommend the power supply to be fused
by means of a three-phase circuit breaker.

Supply cables to hoists and lifts with VFC

(Variable Frequency Converter)
The size of the power supply cable must always comply with
Rules and Regulations stipulated by the local Authority for
electrical installations. The customer’s power supply cable must
also be sized to ensure that the voltage drop in the Base panel
does not exceed 3% when starting with full load with the hoist
moving in the upward direction.
The size of the power supply cable can be calculated by follo-
wing formula:
a = L x P x 0.0056... ...where
a = Conductor area in mm2 copper
L = Length in m of the power supply cable from distribution
board to the Base panel
P = Drive motor power in kW on the hoist

IMPORTANT! The power supply cable must be sized accor-

ding to the drive motor power installed on the hoist. Minimum
size of the supply cable is shown on the table above. The table
refers to supply voltage 400V to 460V, 50/60Hz.
See note re: earth circuit breaker on previous page.

ALIMAK 34735 - 1/03

I4 Power supply from generator set at jobsite
Required generator power
It is recommended that the generator be capable of providing a
starting current of A amperes at rated voltage. If this is not
possible, the guidelines below can be used.
For DOL starting of Alimak hoists having 1 or 2 drive motors
we suggest the following generator sizes:
– 1 motor drive size 132M, 8.8 kW (10 kW) 70 kVA min.
– 2 motor drive size 132M, 8.8 kW (10 kW) 140 kVA min.
– 1 motor drive size 132M, 13 kW (15 kW) 100 kVA min.
– 2 motor drive size 132M, 13 kW (15 kW) 200 kVA min.
It should be noted that the recommended generator sizes are
large due to the fact that the DOL starting of the motor(s) draws
a large current resulting in a voltage drop which would cause
the contactors to oscillate on and off. A smaller generator might
be used but this can only be established by practical experience
related to a specific make and model of the generator set.
For VFC (Variable Frequency Converter) operated hoists the
generator size in kVA should be approximately 2 x the installed
motor power in kW. (S3 = 25% ED).

Voltage drop in the power supply

Typical symptoms
– The hoist will not start with the full rated load.
– The brakes will not lift when starting in the Up-direction.
– The contactors oscillate on and off (”shatter”) when starting
with full load in the Up-direction.
– The contacts of the Up and the main contactors are damaged.

Steps to be taken to overcome a voltage drop problem

The best method to avoid any voltage drop problem is to make a
proper engineering review of the conditions at the job site
before installing the hoist. When installed, the options are
limited.
However, should a situation occur where the power supply seems
to be insufficient, it is important to determine whether this
depends on the voltage drop in the power supply or something
else. Use an instrument to measure the incoming power supply
voltage in both the B-panel at the base and the M-panel on/in
the car. Take the readings during starting conditions in the

ALIMAK 34736 - 1/03

I5
upward direction with rated load in the car. If the voltage drop
exceeds the values given above, one or more of the following
steps can be taken:
1. Increase the conductor size in the power supply cable from
the jobsite distribution board to the B-panel at base.
2. Increase the conductor size in the trailing power cables
between the Base panel and the car. Due to mechanical and
performance reasons, the conductors in the trailing cable
should not exceed 16 mm2.
The fixed cable to the junction box at 1/2 lifting height can
be increased in size.
3. Reduce the rated load.
4. Install a step-up transformer xxx/690V in the power supply
in order to increase the voltage.
Note! Motor windings must be adaptable to this higher voltage
otherwise the motor must be changed. To give the best possi-
ble advantage, the step-up transformer should preferably be
located close to the jobsite distribution board.
5. Use some sort of soft start equipment.

If you have any questions regarding the power supply cables

or the trailing cables, please contact Alimak for advice.

operations later on when permanently installing the trailing
cable in the car electrical panel. Connect the power
conductors of the trailing cable via the cable bracket to
terminals according to the wiring diagram for the particular
installation.
2. Connect the other end of the trailing cable to the terminals
in the main electrical panel at the base according to the
wiring diagram for the particular installation.

Main power supply

Work performed on electrical equipment must be carried out
by competent personnel, trained for such work. The power
supply must be switched off and locked before work is
performed.

1. Connect the power supply to the terminals L1, L2 and L3 in

the main electrical panel at the base and the remaining
conductors according to the wiring diagram for the particular
installation.
2. Provide a by-pass with the ”short-circuit plug” from the
uppermost el. landing equipment, inserted in the base panel.
This by-pass must be made in order that the hoist can be
used during erection before the landing door/gates inter-
locking circuits are fitted.
Always make jumper wires of conductors with colour other
than used in the electrical panel to make their removal
easier.
3. Turn on the main switch at the base. Open the electrical
panel in the car and turn on the main switch in order to
check that the main sequence is correct.
When the phase sequence connections are correct, then the
red indicator on the phase sequence relay -K10 is
illuminated.
4. Set the Normal/Inspection switch in the electric control
panel in the car to the ”Insp.” mode.

WARNING!
Unintentional moving.
Always prepare the hoist for operation from the car
roof only during erection.
Can cause severe personal injury or death.

ALIMAK 34702 - 1/01

K 11 Mast
All mast sections should be stored on dry and firm surface and
close to the erection place where possible.
Erection of mast attachments, cable guides and optional vertical
pipes should be executed concurrent with the erection of the
mast at their proper elevations.

DANGER !
Crushing hazard.
When hoist is moving, always stand inside safety
railing to avoid being crushed by balconies, scaffolds
or other protruding structures.
Will cause severe injury or death.
h 40

Deviation of mast
Lateral deviation of each mast section in any direction from the
intended reference line must not exceed 2 mm (1/16’’).

Erection of the mast

IMPORTANT: Safety device test with only erection load in
car shall be performed as soon as a mast height of 10 meter
(approx. 30 ft. ) is reached. See instructions for safety test
execution in chapter ”Service and Maintenance”, below
heading ”Safety test” in Operator’s Manual.

1. Install the assembly platform where applicable.

2. Load mast sections in the car and on the car roof by using
the lifting yoke and erection crane – do not exceed the maxi-
mum allowable erection load of the hoist.
Lift mast sections from car to car roof through the trapdoor.
Note that the erection crane is only designed to lift its maxi-
mum allowed load vertically.
3. Drive the car as close to the mast top as possible and press
the emergency stop button on the car roof to prevent acci-
dental operation.
Lift one mast section, clean and grease the guiding cones.
Swing the section over the mast top, lower and bolt.
Bolt tightening torque:

Scando 450 mast section: 125 Nm ( 92 lbf. x ft).
Check that the mast bolts are original and marked ALIMAK.

IMPORTANT: Before removing the erection crane lifting

sling, make sure that all mast bolts are properly tightened.

4. Continue as above until the mast is erected to its desired ele-
vation, making certain that ties are installed at their proper
elevation and that the maximum allowable free top is never
exceeded during installation.
5. Install covers on the top mast tubes. See instructions headed
”Limit Ramps” for installation of ramps on top mast.
6. Tighten all mast bolts again.
In order to ensure that the required mast bolts and nuts are
installed, the mast bolts are to be installed with the bolt head
inserted from the bottom and the nut inserted on top. Using

ALIMAK 34704 - 1/01

K 13 Plumbness of the mast
Check possible out-of plumbness of the mast with a plumb line,
spirit level or a theodolite, when installing the first tie.
If a correction is required, adjust it by means of the mast tie.
When installing additional ties check verticality with a long
straight-edge rule, using the ground level plan and first tie as
references. Use a theodolite if available, but never use a spirit
level above the first tie.
The use of a straight-edge will also indicate if the mast is
twisted.
Try to use the same, or as few references as possible for the
entire mast installation.
Straight-edge
Straight-edge rules may be fabricated on site. As an example,
they can be a 2” x 4” x 1.5 m (5 ft) long piece of timber and
attached to the mast with tie wire. The straight-edge must be
properly attached.

IMPORTANT: Remove straight-edges after the mast has

been installed.

Straight-edge

Deviation of mast
Lateral deviation of each mast section in any direction from the
intended reference line must not exceed 2 mm (1/16’’).
Straight-edge

Mast expansion/contraction
The expansion/contraction of the mast is: 0.012 mm/m per
degree °C ( or .000008 in./ft. per degree °F).

ALIMAK 34705 - 1/01

On site cranes
K 14
First choice in assembling the lift system is the use of a crane
with sufficient lifting height.
3 – 5 mast sections (never exceeding the mast’s freestanding
height) can be assembled lying on the ground before being
lifted to the mast top and assembled.
Our recommendation is to attach the load according to the
figure to avoid driving to the mast top in order to disconnect the
load from the crane hook.

Weight per mast section

Scando 650 mast section:
Mast section with 1 (one) rack; 115 kg/each (254 lbs./each)
Mast section with 2 (two) racks; 135 kg/each (298 lbs./each)
Scando 450 mast section:
Mast section with 1 (one) rack; 68 kg/each (150 lbs./each)
Mast section with 2 (two) racks; 85 kg/each (190 lbs./each)

WARNING!
Lift strap collapse hazard
Make sure that the lift straps are properly sized for
the load to be lifted.
Can cause severe personal injury or death.

Reason for NOT using a spirit level for plumbing the mast.
We do not recommend that a spirit level be used for mast
alignment, as it is very difficult to achieve a 2 mm (1/16’’)
maximum deviation from the reference line.
With this system deviations can easily accumulate causing an
out of plumb mast installation.

K 16
For each installation and set-up the type of tie must be chosen to
suit the particular installation.
In the manual Technical Description ”Projecting Hoist Mast”
maximum allowable mast tie distances are shown, as well as
allowable free top, measurements L and B of the tie attachment
and, as a result of this, forces on the wall attachment.
Where ties are to be attached to cast in place inserts, this must
take place early enough to ensure that the concrete is cured and
at its required strength. Then the hoist erection sequence can
take place.
Inserts must be suitably placed in the concrete with proper rein-
forcing steel.

K 23 Installation of cable guide with trolley, in steps below half
the final lifting height
The trailing power cable and bracket are always installed as
close to the mast top or cathead as possible. In this way the mast
can be raised, double the initial height, avoiding extending the
cable.
When the mast is erected above this level, the trailing power
cable is extended and installed again up to mast top and so on.

Example: – The hoist is erected in a first stage with free hanging

cable up to 30 meters (100 ft) mast height.

– The mast can now be erected up to 60 m (200 ft)

without the cable having to be extended.

When half the final mast height + 3.0 meters (10 ft) is reached,
k 90
a fixed power cable is installed in the hoist mast up to this level,
after which the mast can be raised to its final height, without the
cable having to be extended.

1. Unwind all trailing power cable from the cable drum at base
Unwind the cable and connect it to the landing and connect to the hoist car. Note that the cable

2. Connect the other end of the cable to the three terminals to

the right of terminals L1, L2, L3 and to the ground bar in
the main electrical panel at the base.

3. Erect the mast and guide rail for the cable guiding device to
the required height with the cable free hanging. In order to
execute this, the cable must be kept stretched during this
operation by one person at the base landing.

4. Bring the cable unloading tool, junction box and push

mount ties, and drive to the mast top. Install the cable
unloading tool.

5. Pull up the trailing power cable to the hoist car and stretch
the cable between the electrical panel on the ground enclo-
sure and the hoist car. (Continue next page).

installed approx. 5 cm (2 in.) above the lower trolley when
dual trolleys occur).
13. Lift up the excess cable and fasten it with tape on the safety
railing.
14. Finally install cable guides every 6 meter (20 ft) on the
mast – above the guide rail for the cable guiding device.
Install the trailing control cable in a second stage in a corre-
sponding manner.
ALIMAK 34873 - 1/02
K 25 When it is necessary to extend the mast above the height that
the trailing power cable permits, the cable is extended according
to the following instructions:

15. Drive downwards from the mast top and disconnect all cable
guides which are above the guide rail for the cable guiding
device, on the hoist mast.

Extend the trailing cable via the car

unloading tool.
17. Loosen the attachment on the cable bracket and lower the
cable carefully through the cable bracket (= the distance
the cable bracket / trailing cable is to be raised).
Reassemble the cable bracket.
18. Drive towards the top of the mast and clamp the cable in
same manner as done previously.
IMPORTANT: Do not exceed half the final lifting height
+ 3.0 meter (10 ft).

19. Mount the cable unloading tool or the stationary mast cable
bracket alternately, on the mast top, if the final half height
mast height is going to be reached.
20. The mast can now be extended to double the existing height.
21. Finally install cable guides every 6 meter (20 ft) on the
mast – above the guide rail for the cable guiding device.

ALIMAK 34874 - 1/03

Upon further erection, above procedure is repeated until half

hoist must not operate when the landing doors are open.
Also check the doors individually.
Ensure that the hoist will not stop if the closed doors
are pulled after the hoist has started. Drive the car down-
wards when checking this!
9. Install the remaining landing doors as described above.
Connect the plug to the sockets on the landing below and
move up the by-passed plug so that it always is at the last
installed landing.
Ensure that the cable between the landing doors inter-
locking is installed in such a position that it cannot be
jammed or mechanically damaged.

WARNING !
Unintentional moving.
The door interlock must always be connected
immediately when a landing door is installed.
If the jumper wire of the lower landings is not
removed, the hoist can be started with the landing
door open.
Can cause severe personal injury or death.

Installation of landing gate
K 34
1. Install the landing gate on the scaffold at the landing or on
the hoist scaffold – where applicable.

2. Lubricate the moving parts of the gate and

make sure that they work properly – adjust
if necessary.

3. Install the prefabricated control cable with switch and

possible push button box at the landing gate as shown in
the figure.
Note that the length of the cable can be varied so that suitable
cable winding can be used.

4. Pull down and connect the plug in the socket on the electric
junction box at ground landing after the present by-passed
plug in this socket is removed.
Without the by-passed plug the electric equipment circuit is
disconnected – which means that the hoist will not operate
before this plug is connected again.

5. Connect the by-passed plug to the socket at the landing,

which is installed and check the function of the interlocking
gear.
The hoist must not be operated when the landing gate is
open.

6. Install remaining landing gates as described above.

Connect the plug to the sockets on the landing below and
move up the by-passed plug so that it always is at the last
installed landing.
Make sure that the cable between the landing doors inter-
locking is installed in such a location that it cannot be jammed
or mechanically damaged

ALIMAK 34728 - 1/01

Dismantling
L1
Methods and order of dismantling for essential items are basi-
cally reversed from installation procedure.
For more detailed information, please see chapter ”Installation”.
1. Study the Safety Instructions.
2. Install barriers around hoist area with signs reading:
WARNING! Falling objects.
If a dual car installation occurs:
The car NOT intended to be used during the dismantling
procedure must be parked at the ground landing and its
main ON/OFF switch locked with a padlock, in the OFF
position. (The same requirements goes for the installation
and service work on a dual car hoist installation.)

3. Put the switch ”Normal/Inspection” in the electric box in

position ”Inspection”. Mount the erection crane.
4. Drive to the mast top and dismantle all limit cams.
5. Dismantle mast sections (until 3 sections remain), landing
equipment, tubes – if any, and ties. Do not overload car.
If a cable trolley system with separate guide rail occurs:
The procedures described on page K 28, para 1 – 6, must be
performed before the dismantling of the hoist mast below
half the lifting height, where the cable trolley guide rail
ends, can take place.

WARNING !
Mast collapse hazard
When removing mast sections – be sure to attach
the erecting crane to the mast section before
removing the mast bolts and make sure that the
upper car roller assembly is below the joints of the
section to be removed.
Failure to follow this warning can cause severe
personal injury or death.

6. Dismantle the enclosure, or only the enclosure part on the

mast side if the hoist is resting on a concrete slab.
7. Disassemble the base unit attachment to the foundation.
8. Disassemble the machinery’s pull rod connection to the car.

ALIMAK 34729 - 1/03

L2 9. Run the drive unit completely onto the 3rd mast section.
Disconnect main power and pull apart the plug and recep-
tacle connection to the electrical panel.
10. Lift off the mast section including the drive unit so that only
2 pcs. sections remain in the base unit.
11. Install the transportation equipment that locks the car to the
mast sections in the base unit.

12. Remove the safety railing and the erection crane from the
car roof.
13. Switch off the power supply and the main circuit connection.
14. Assemble the ground enclosure.
15. Mount the wire rope lifting loop in its brackets on the car
roof. The base unit is now ready for transportation.
16. Order embedment parts or expansion bolts for the next
installation.

WARNING!
Hazardous voltage
Only authorized electricians or authorized service
personnel can carry out work on the electrical
equipment.
Can cause severe injury or death.
