BIOGRAPHY
The Bauhaus School was
founded in Weimar in 1919 by
Walter Gropius. His goal was to
improve Germany's industrial
design. Joined by him were
artists that came out of
movements like Constructivism
and Dadaism. Some of the main
teachers included Josef Albers,
Paul Klee, Wassily Kadinsky,
Herbert Bayer, Joost Schmidt,
and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. One
objective of the school was to
reunite arts and crafts and
another was to create functional
design. The Bauhaus school was
moved to Dessau in 1925 and
Walter Gropius finally to Berlin in 1930. The

Laszlo Moholy-Nagy joined
Paul Klee, and Wassily
Kadinsky in 1923 to teach the
Vorkers, or Basic Course at
Weimar. The course introduced
the use of new materials to
implement the principles of
abstract design. Moholy-Nagy
was interested in the theory of
“typophoto,” which integrates
type and photography.

JOOST SCHMIDT
Joost Schmidt was a former
student of the Bauhaus when he
came back to teach a course in
typography in 1925. Many of
the letterheads and logos he
1 and Herbert Bayer produced
were an extension of Moholy-
Nagy's approach to combining
type with images.
