RADIOGRAPHIC TESTING

 Industrial radiography is used for a variety of applications but is commonly

performed using two different sources of radiation, X-Ray and Gamma ray
sources.
 X-Ray capabilities run the gamut from 4 MEV units utilized to radiograph
extremely large and thick castings and forgings, to portable X-Ray
cameras used for field weld applications and thin wall material inspection.
 Gamma sources vary from very low level fluoroscopic units to perform real
time corrosion under insulation surveys, to Iridium (Ir192) and Selenium (Se
75) sources used for a variety of weld inspections, to Cobalt (Co 60)
inspections for thick component testing.

X-RAY EQUIPMENT
RT BY CRAWLER

 The X-Ray Crawler is similar to conventional radiography however an x-ray

source tube on a crawler device is run inside the pipeline to each weld
which can be controlled by outside remote sensor. The technique is quick
and can inspect on average 150 welds per day. The biggest advantage of
x-ray crawlers is REDUCTION IN EXPOSURE TIME AND NUMBER OF
EXPOSURES.
X-RAY CRAWLER EQUIPMENT
SCAR PROJECTOR

 The Model 959M portable gamma radiographic exposure device is specifically

designed as a Small Controlled Area Radiography (SCAR) system. The SCAR
projector is used primarily for the radiography of standard or difficult joint
geometries without disruption and the need for large barrier areas.
 The SCAR system is comprised of a Model 959M projector, a pneumatic control
unit and a series of clamps to fit a variety of pipe sizes.
 The system may be used with a maximum of 15 curies of Iridium-192 or 81
curies of Selenium-75. Lower activity sources with smaller focals are available.
 Allows for 24 Hour radiography
 Highly directional beam
 Ideal for offshore barge RT where area clearance is critical.
SCAR PROJECTOR

 SENTINELTM Model 1075 SCARPro source projector is used for industrial non-
destructive testing applications of gamma radiography with Selenium-
75. SCARPro can be used as a category I or II exposure device.
 When used in SCAR mode (category I), the SCARPro allows radiography to be
performed in congested work areas with a minimal distance to the controlled
areas.
 When used as a traditional projector (category II), standard SENTINELTM source
guide tubes and collimators allow the Selenium-75 source to be used for axial,
radial and panoramic exposures.
 Model 1075 SCARPro is a dual mode radiographic exposure device for Small
Controlled Area Radiography and traditional projection radiography.
 An interchangeable collimator with a 90o incremental adjustment enables safe
radiography in areas congested with workers.
SCAR PROJECTOR EQUIPMENT
RADIOGRAPH
ULTRASONIC TESTING

 Waves are introduced into a material and travel in a straight line and at a
constant speed until they encounter a discontinuity. The interface causes
some of the wave energy to be reflected and the rest of it to be
transmitted. The amount of reflected vs. transmitted energy is detected and
provides information on the size of the reflector, & therefore the
discontinuity encountered.

AUT PHASED ARRAY

 Phased Array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) is an advanced method of ultrasonic

testing. Phased array ultrasonic method can reveal defects embedded in
the material that cannot be easily resolved with conventional ultrasonic
testing.
 The phased array probe consists an array of number of small ultrasonic
transducers each of which can be pulsed individually.
 Sizing of defects is very accurate by PAUT.

AUT TIME OF FLIGHT DIFFRACTION (ToFD)

 Time of Flight Diffraction (ToFD) is an advanced method of Ultrasonic

inspection.
 It is a very sensitive defect detection method in welded joints.
 Time of Flight Diffraction (ToFD) ultrasonic test method can perform crack
detection very precisely and allow the owner to run the equipment or
plants until the critical crack depth and length is not reached with a
minimal risk of failure.

CORROSION MAPPING RMS2

 The RMS2 is a high speed, high accuracy remote access ultrasonic corrosion mapping
system designed to evaluate the condition of assets as storage tanks, pipelines, pressure
vessels and other critical equipment, supporting efficient inspection programme that
support integrity management processes to ensure effective and safe operation.
 The RMS2 ultrasonic scanner can give 100% coverage in a band up to 1000 mm wide,
significantly increasing Probability of Detection (POD) of defects and corrosion, enabling
engineers to determine the optimum repair strategy and improve remaining life
assessment (RLA) & risk based inspection (RBI) maintenance programs.

The RMS2 is extremely flexible with a range of scanning heads to suit different inspection
requirements.

LRUT-LONG RANGE UT
GWT-GUIDED WAVE UT
 LRUT is traditionally used to detect corrosion, erosion and other defects in
pipework. An array of transducers is clamped around the pipe and
ultrasound is transmitted simultaneously along the pipe in both directions.
 The technique’s principal advantage is that it provides 100% initial
screening coverage, and only requires local access to the pipe surface
where the transducer array is to be attached. The technique has the
ability to inspect inaccessible areas such as clamps and cased or buried
pipes. It works without the need to remove insulation or coating.

MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING

 Used for finding surface/near surface defects in ferromagnetic material,

Magnetic Particle testing is a versatile inspection method used for field and
shop applications. Magnetic particle testing works by magnetizing a
ferromagnetic specimen using a magnet or special magnetizing
equipment. If the specimen has discontinuity, the magnetic field flowing
through the specimen is interrupted and leakage field occurs. Finely milled
iron particles coated with a dye pigment are applied to the specimen.
These are attracted to leakage fields and cluster to form an indication
directly over the discontinuity.

MGNETIC PARTICLE INDICATIONS
LIQUID PENETRANT TESTING

 Penetrant testing – Based on the properties of capillary action, or the

phenomenon of a liquid rising or climbing when confined to a small
opening due to surface wetting properties of the liquid, Penetrant testing is
used for finding surface breaking discontinuities on relatively smooth,
nonporous surfaces

POSITIVE MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION

 NITON’s XRF alloy analyzers are portable hand-held devices that can
perform a chemical composition analysis on the material at any time in
merely seconds. XRF works by exposing the material to a flux of x-rays. The
atoms then absorb the energy and become temporarily excited and they
fluoresce, or emit x-ray. The x-rays emitted by the sample’s atoms possess
clearly defined energies that are unique to the elements present in the
sample. By measuring the intensity and energy, the XRF instrument can
provide qualitative and quantitative analysis. In other words, it can identify
the elements, measure the concentration of each and display them on the
unit.
POSITIVE MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION EQUIPMENT

EDDY CURRENT TESTING (ECT)

 Eddy Current testing uses the principals of electromagnetism as the basis

for conducting inspections. When alternating current is applied to a
conductor a magnetic field develops in and around the conductor. When
a second conductor is introduced into the magnetic field an induced
current flow is created. Eddy currents are a type of induced current.
 1. Crack detection-A primary use of eddy current inspection as cracks
cause a disruption in the circular flow patterns of the eddy currents and
weaken their strength.
 2. Conductivity measurements-Because of the sensitivity to changes in
a material's conductive properties and magnetic permeability, Eddy
Current is an excellent tool for material Identification and Material Sorting.
EDDY CURRENT TESTING
MAGNETIC FLUX LEAKAGE (MFL)

 Strong magnet induces a magnetic field in the material. At areas where there is
corrosion or missing metal, a leakage field will arise. The output from the
detector can be electronically digitalized for automated inspection systems.
 Leakage from storage tanks containing gas, oil or chemicals, or the influence
of the weather on the external surfaces of storage soils and tanks pose a very
hazardous situation. Material can also be affected by internal temperature
variations. Therefore the condition of tanks, and in particular the tank bottom, is
of outstanding importance.
 Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) is a method of Non-Destructive Testing, which is
used to detect corrosion and pitting in steel structures, most commonly
pipelines and storage tanks.
 MFL is a detection technique, which detects volumetrically changes. It is a very
suitable tool for detecting corroded spots in the plates.
MAGNETIC FLUX LEAKAGE (MFL) EQUIPMENT
MFL REPORT – COMBINED IMAGE
VISUAL INSPECTION

 A visual inspection or visual examination of objects, parts or components is

the oldest and reliable non-destructive testing method.
 The test method is applied to almost every product as a quality assurance
tool.
 The most detrimental unacceptable discontinuities in the objects or items
are the surface opening discontinuities.

POST-WELD HEAT TREATMENT (PWHT)

 Post-weld heat treatment is most generally used for stress relief. The
purpose of stress relieving is to remove any internal or residual stresses that
may be present from the welding operation. Stress relief after welding may
be necessary in order to reduce the risk of brittle fracture, to avoid
subsequent distortion on machining, or to eradicate the risk of stress
corrosion.
