Annual Stakeholder Day
COMPANIES in the global forest industry are continually investing in
new technology to further improve the way they operate and to provide
products that are high-quality and sustainably sourced. A growing
recognition of the circular economy and its drive to reduce, reuse and
recycle has seen companies begin to develop innovative solutions to
transform old waste into new products.
Advanced uses for wood-based fibres are being developed with the
manufacture of textiles that were previously made from synthetic fibres
derived from fossil fuels. These are now being used in the wider drive
towards ethical fashion for producers and the retailers they supply.
Engineered wood products such as cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam
are now at the forefront of contemporary architecture and building design
and the leading alternative to concrete and steel. Timber is transforming
the face of our cities and this increased use of timber makes a positive

events of the summer – Solid Wood Solutions. This one-day
conference and exhibition will showcase pioneering projects through

Certified Forests and Sustainable Construction
THE Crown Estate forest in Windsor Great Park was the
main location for PEFC UK’s inaugural field trip for the
construction sector. Held on a gloriously sunny day in
May, the visit was designed to demonstrate the link
between certified forests and sustainable construction.
Delegates also visited the Crown Estate biomass

learn more about the importance of certification and how the
construction sector can support responsible producers and ultimately
the world’s woodlands and forests, through their procurement choices.

commercial thinnings were carried out. They were briefed by Crown Estate’s
Chief Forester John Deakin, on the steps taken to ensure that Swinley Forest
part of the 6,000-hectare Windsor Estate, is sustainably-managed. He also
explained how the forest met PEFC’s sustainable forest management criteria
on land management, accessibility for recreational users and wildlife and bio-
diversity promotion and its long-term tree replanting strategy.

the event. The group visited a planting site and
also had an opportunity to witness a harvesting
operation. The forest visit was followed by a
tour of the James Jones sawmill in Lockerbie to
see the processes involved in transforming a
log into a range of sawn timber products.

involves and demonstrate the rigorous
processes involved in bringing certified wood
products to market.

AS this is our summer issue, what
better time to feature a company that
manufactures an iconic product associated
with sunny days in the park or on the beach
– the traditional stripey canvas deckchair.
Southsea Deckchairs has been
manufacturing beach furniture at its
Channel coast base for over 25 years. They
aim to provide customers with a product
which is both durable and sustainable. The
company uses PEFC-certified Merpauh
from Malaysia to construct the frames.

TO HELP us promote PEFC to woodland owners
and the use of PEFC’s online certification tool, we
have contracted the services of an experienced
forester, Matt Taylor. Matt, who will be helping raise
awareness of and grow demand for PEFC forest
certification, has worked in the UK forestry and land
management industry for over 20 years. We hope
that Matt’s efforts will stimulate greater uptake
of certification from small woodlands, which will
lead to increased amounts of PEFC certified timber
coming on to the UK marketplace.

Sustainable
Packaging
from Itsu
ITSU was founded in 1997 by Julian Metcalfe,
one of the co-founders of leading food to go
chain Pret a Manger. It sells a range of Asian-
inspired dishes. There are now over 70 outlets
serving light, nutritious dishes to millions of
customers from venues around the country.
The company strives to produce “the most
innovative, healthy delicious food from
responsible sources”. It also extends the same
care in its choice of packaging. We are
delighted to see that Itsu’s sushi trays,
manufactured by Huhtamaki Delta, are made
from PEFC-certified paper board and carry
the PEFC label to provide customers with
assurances of responsible sourcing.
UKWAS 4
Approved
THE UK Woodland Assurance Standard
(UKWAS) is an independent certification
standard for verifying sustainable woodland
management in the UK. A new fourth edition
of the UKWAS was introduced on 1st April
2018. This revised version was prepared by
the UKWAS Steering Group and subsequently
adopted for use in the UK by both the Forest
Stewardship Council® (FSC®) and PEFC.
