1. Installation and Uninstallation Issues

No printer icon created after USB installation

If you have connected the printer to your computer via a USB cable, ensure that the cable is
properly connected and the printer is turned on. Restart your system if necessary.

If the system still cannot detect the printer, run the Scrubber utility to perform a clean printer driver
uninstallation (located in the Utils\Scrubber folder on the Starter CD). Restart your system, and
re-install the printer driver.

Reboot is required after installation on some Windows systems

When prompted, please reboot your system after installation.

If you do not restart the system, you may not be able to print from the printer and some
applications may not function properly. This is because the printer setup program will upgrade
Microsoft Windows installer to version 2.0 if the system is using an older version. This requires
the system to be restarted.

Do not try to delete USB port created for printer on Windows 98

You will get an illegal operation error message if you try to delete the USB port created for a
printer (from the Ports tab in the Printer Properties dialog box).

Unable to print on Windows 2000 and XP clients after installing driver from
Windows NT 4.0
Users will be prompted for the printer driver when they try to print after installing the driver from
Windows NT 4.0 by doing a point-and-print.

This is because Windows 2000 and Windows XP cannot print using the Windows NT 4.0 driver.

To resolve this, administrators need to install the driver for Windows 2000 and Windows XP on
the Windows NT 4.0 server.

To install Windows 2000 and Windows XP driver on Windows NT 4.0 server:

1. In the driver properties dialog box on the server, click the New Driver button on the General
tab.
2. When prompted for files, locate the Windows 2000 and Windows XP folder on the printer

Version 0.1
Starter CD and select the driver.

Installation through network fails to locate certain files on some Windows

systems
If you are installing the printer through the network and the network path that you provided (when
prompted) is very long, installation will fail to locate some installation files.

This is a limitation of the operating system. It can support only a limited number of characters in
the full path (including filename) that you specify.

To resolve this, map to the network drive if you have not already done so. Or find out if the files
are available on a network drive that has a shorter path; check with your network administrator.

Windows XP does not trigger Plug and Play when you restart system after
uninstallation
If you uninstall the printer driver with the printer connected to your system and the system does
not detect the printer after restart, try to restart again or run the Device Manager to search for the
printer.

Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition

You need to use the Add/Remove programs method to install the printer driver.

To do so:
1. Double-click Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
2. Click Install, and then click Next.
3. Click Browse and select setup.exe.
4. Select All users begin with common application settings and click Next.
This will run the printer installer.
5. Follow the instructions on screen to complete the driver installation.
6. Return to the Add/Remove Programs dialog and click Next, followed by Finish to complete
installation.

Unable to do Plug-and-Play installation from Windows to Novell

The printer setup program will fail to detect the printer if you try to do a Plug-and-Play installation
to a Novell server through an LPT or a USB port. The setup program will not go to completion.

To resolve this, either select an LPT port and then skip the Plug-and-Play installation or select
any port (such as a COM port) from the Other Port drop-down list. After installation, associate the
printer to an LPT or a USB port in the printer properties dialog box.

Unable to install printer driver using Novell NDPS printer manager on some
Windows systems
If you have installed Novell client service pack 3.32sp1 on Windows 9x or 4.83sp1 on Windows
2000 or NT, an error message will appear when you try to install the printer driver using Novell
NDPS printer manager.

To resolve this, install the driver using the Add Printer method.

Novell point-and-print does not work with Windows 9x and Windows 2000
Use the Add Printer Wizard to install the printer driver:

Version 0.1
1. Go to the Printers folder.
2. Double-click the Add Printer icon.
3. In the Add Printer dialog box, select the Network Print Server option.
4. Browse to the appropriate NDS or bindery queue.

For Windows 9x, you can also use the following alternative:
1. Use the HP File Expansion utility on the Starter CD’s \Utils\Expand folder to uncompress the
Windows 9x driver to a temporary location on your hard disk.
2. Use the driver in this temporary location to set up Novell point-and-print.

Uploading printer software to a Novell server

Before you upload the printer software from the Starter CD to your Novell server, you need to
copy the files to a temporary directory and remove the read-only attributes.

Cannot print after installing the printer on a network

If you are using a computer running Windows, make sure that the network ports created in the
printer driver match the printer IP address:
1. Print a configuration page by pressing the Configuration Page button on the control panel.
2. From the Windows desktop, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers or Printers
and Faxes.
3. Right-click the printer icon, click Properties, and then click the Ports tab.
4. Select the TCP/IP port for the printer, and then click Configure Port.
5. Compare the IP address listed in the dialog box and make sure it matches the IP address listed
on the configuration page. If the IP addresses are different, change the IP address in the dialog
box to match the address on the configuration page.
6. Click OK twice to save the settings and close the dialog boxes.

Cannot install the printer on an IPX/SPX or Novell network using a network

cable or for wireless communication
The network connectivity included by default with printer models that include a network port only
supports TCP/IP networks. IPX/SPX and Novell networks are not supported. To connect the
printer to an IPX/SPX or Novell network, use an HP Jetdirect print server with the printer. For
more information, see http://www.hp.com.

2. Other Known Issues

Unable to monitor printer status after creating a blind port during

installation
After creating a blind port while installing the printer driver, the Toolbox cannot monitor status
before the first print job is printed. Also, the first print job might require more initialization time
before it prints.

To enable the Toolbox to monitor status and prevent delays in printing, change the printer IP
address on the Ports tab of the printer properties dialog box.

Unable to print to Novell server from Windows 9x client

Printing will fail if you log onto a Novell server from a Windows 9x client system and try to print to
the printer that is connected to the server.

To be able to print to the server from the client, do one of the following:

Version 0.1
- Install the printer driver on the Windows 9x client using the Add Printer Wizard.
- Do a point-and-print to the Novell server.
- Manually capture a printer port on the Windows 9x client

Problem printing on a wired or wireless network

If you experience problems printing on a wired or wireless network, try the following:

1 Because older versions of the print monitor software are not replaced with the latest version,
restart the computer to help replace the older version..
2 Make sure that wireless communication was enabled by connecting the printer to the computer
using the cross cable and then setting the wireless settings for the printer through the embedded
Web server (EWS).
3 If the problem persists, note the printer IP address, and then change the IP address on the
Ports tab of the printer properties dialog box.

Problem printing with high-resolution and large scaling settings

You may encounter problems such as insufficient disk space or get a blank printout when you do
high-resolution printing (maximum dpi). In such situations, try enabling Low Memory Mode in the
Windows printer driver’s Advance Features settings or try decreasing the resolution of the
image.

Printing handouts
If you try printing a document containing pages in portrait as well as landscape orientation, using
the Handout feature, then you may get unexpected results. We recommend that you avoid using
the Handout feature to print such documents.

Printing banners
When printing banners, make sure that only the required number of sheets are loaded in tray 1.
After printing finishes, the Resume light blinks. Press the Resume button on the control panel to
eject the banner paper.

You do not need to press the Resume button during the printing process.

Printing watermarks
If the Tiling feature has been selected as a global default setting then you will not be able to print
a watermark on your documents even if you uncheck (disable) the Tiling feature within the printer
software. This is because the printer software does not allow Watermark to be combined with the
Tiling feature.

Page orientation does not match the print preview

When printing on both sides of the page (duplex printing), the orientation of the printed page
might not match the orientation provided in the print preview. To enable the page orientation in the
print preview to match the orientation of the printed page, set the correct orientation on the
Basics tab of the printer driver.

I/O timeouts for LPT ports

When printing complex documents, you may get an I/O warning after 45 seconds (Windows 98
and Windows Me) and 90 seconds (Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP). To suppress
the display of this dialog box, increase the timeout value in the printer's properties.

Version 0.1
To change the timeout value:
1. Right-click the printer icon and select Properties.
2. In Windows NT 4.0, click the Ports tab and select Configure Port.
In Windows 9x, click the Details tab.
3. Change the Transmission Retry value and click OK.

Toolbox status for locally shared and point-and-print clients

To obtain the Toolbox status in these environments, the Toolbox at the clients' end must be able
to communicate to the server. Hence, Toolbox must also be running on the server. You can
include Toolbox in the Startup folder so that it will automatically launch whenever you start the
system.

3. Known Issues with Specific Software Programs

Microsoft Excel
When printing an entire Excel workbook on both sides of the page, do one of the following:

* Make sure that the two-sided printing option is enabled in the global print properties (available
by clicking Start, pointing to Settings, clicking Printers or Printers and Faxes, right-clicking the
printer icon, and then choosing Properties, Document Defaults, or Printing Preferences).
* Make sure that Print on Both Sides is selected for each worksheet in the workbook.

Corel Draw 8.0

There are missing graphics or if they are printed with alternating light and dark bands, switch the
Bitmap Output Threshold value to a lower one.

1. Click Print, Miscellaneous and select Special Settings.

2. Under the options, select Bitmap Output Threshold (K:).
3. Set the value to 30.

Corel Print House, PhotoPaint, PhotoHouse

These applications read the driver print mode (Normal, Best, etc.) at application startup time.
They do not detect any change in the print mode after the application starts running. To achieve
the expected print quality, set the desired print mode using the Printers box within Windows.
Select Document Defaults and set the desired Print Quality. Close the Dialogs and start the
application. To change the print quality thereafter, exit the application, change the Print Quality
and then restart the application.
