light sections, sheet and plate. This vast product range
is complemented by processing services including
straight and mitre cutting, shearing, shotblasting and
primer painting.

We also offer many more processing services including

slitting, press blanking, plate profiling, laser cutting and
welding. This means that we can supply products in the
exact shape or length required by customers for
immediate production or fabrication.

When using this guide please note that, through a

continuing policy of product improvement, specifications
and sizes may at times be altered. For further information

1.0 Product Standards

The past fifteen years have seen a major transformation in respect of 2. The standards covering hot dip galvanised products were also
the standards used to describe steels used widely in industry today; amongst the first to be published; cold forming grades in 1991
practically all relevant British standards have been declared obsolete (EN 10142) and structural grades in 1992 (EN 10147). These

revision, in some cases more than once. In terms of the products
sold by Corus Service Centres, there have been two important
examples of this since this booklet was last revised in 2004:

1. EN 10025 was one of the very earliest European standards

covering structural steels. It replaced, in large part BS 4360 in
1990. The latest edition of this standard brings together a
number of types of structural steels - both flat rolled and long
products, and in order to do this comprise six parts. It would be
anticipated that for all but the most sophisticated direct mill
supply situations, just parts 1 and 2 would be relevant to service
centre activity, and that of their customers.
(See also Section 2.1 following).

1.0 Product Standards

Steel names are classified according either to their application and

mechanical or physical properties (Group 1), or to their chemical
composition (Group 2). Within Group 1, there are eight sub groups,
but within the context of the scope of this booklet, only two are
encountered commonly.

Steel names - Group 1

The two sub groups of significance in Group 1 are as follows:

Sub group 1

}
S = Structural steels followed by a number
P = Steels for pressure purposes being the specified
minimum yield strength
L = Line pipe steels in MPa(1) for the
E = Engineering steels smallest thickness range.

S275 and S355 are examples of this type.

Sub group 2
D = flat products for cold forming, followed by one of the
following letters:

- C for cold rolled products,

- D for hot rolled products for direct cold forming, or

- X for products, the rolled condition of which is not specified.

These letters are followed in turn by two digits which characterise

the steel.

Examples of each of these are DC01, DD14 and DX53.

Widespread use is then made of additional symbols to describe the

product in full. For the grades most likely to be encountered, the following
extracts from official publications are offered.

Additional symbols are divided into two groups; those relating to

steel, and those relating to ‘steel products’ which in the present
context essentially means coated products. The latter are separated
from preceding symbols by a plus sign (+). The first group is further
sub-divided in two - symbols in the first sub group can be used on
their own, while those in the second sub group can be used only in
conjunction with codes from the first sub group; this is illustrated
readily by reference to structural steels.

How to use the table Load Bearing Criteria

E.g. To find the most cost effective type to carry General Duty Load over Light Duty 3.0kN/m2 Access limited to one person.
1200mm clear span: General Duty 5.0kN/m2 Regular two way pedestrian traffic.
Heavy Duty 7.5kN/m2 High density pedestrian traffic.
1. Confirm correct load criteria from - Light, General or Heavy
Duty eg. 5.0kN/m2
2. Select relevant clear span row eg. 1200mm Load Bearing Table (Pattern 41/100)
These loadings conform to BS 4592-1:1995 stating deflections
3. Read across the table until you reach a figure greater than or shall be 1/200 of the effective span or 10mm,
equal to your required load criteria, in this case 5.0kN which ever is lesser.
4. Follow the column up to confirm the required Bearer Bar
Section, eg. 25 x 5.

This will be the most cost effective section for you to use to fully
achieve your loading requirements

4.9.2 Flooring Products - Durbar floor plate

Durbar is a non-slip raised pattern floor plate of integral manufacture,

i.e. the pattern is rolled in - not welded. The studs are distributed to
give maximum slip resistance from any angle whilst ensuring a free
draining surface.

The nominal gauge of Durbar is the thickness of the plain plate

exclusive of pattern. The stud height varies with the plate dimensions
and grade, being typically within the overall range 1.5 - 2.2mm.

Durbar is available commonly in commercial quality material (HR15),

as EN 10025-2 S275JR or as Lloyds Grade ‘A’, in thicknesses down
to 3.0mm. Other qualities may be available, but for stronger
materials, the minimum thickness is 4.5mm. If it is intended to post
galvanise the product, this must be specified at the time of enquiry
and order.

5.8 Cold formed hollow sections - Strongbox® 235

Strongbox® 235
Multipurpose 235 MPa strength hollow sections
in sizes up to 139.7 dia, 150 square and 200 x 100 rectangles.
These sections are designed to provide strength combined with a
capacity to be manipulated, as well as good weldability and the
possibility, if required, of responding well to hot dip galvanising -
see pages 88 to 101.

Strongbox® 235 cold formed hollow sections are supplied to Corus

Tubes specification TS30 Rev 1 and have a minimum yield strength
of 235 MPa. They offer a consistent profile and fully comply with the
dimensional tolerances of EN10219, excluding mass.

Inspection and testing

Strongbox® 235 cold formed hollow sections are subject to non
specific inspection and testing and are supplied with a test report to
EN 10204 type 2.2 as standard.

Designation
Strongbox® 235 cold formed hollow sections are designated by their
product name, outside dimensions and thicknesses in millimetres.

Examples:
a) Strongbox® 235 - 114.3 x 5.0
b) Strongbox® 235 - 100 x 50 x 4.0
