COMPARATIVE STUDY: CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTS 
 
INTRODUCTION 
Architect  is  never  static  as  it  evolves  with  time  in  accordance  to  the  development  of  materials  and 
technology. This evolution however, still embodies the same design theories and principles. 
 
OBJECTIVE 
The  objective  is  for students  to  relate  the  ideas  and  concepts  used  in  theories  of  applied  architecture 
during pre‐modern era. 
 
LEARNING OUTCOME 
On completion of this assignment students should be able to: 
 Relate aspects of theories of architectural works of smaller projects with historical reference 
 Discuss  architectural  design  as  a  concept  and  process  in  selected  case/precedent  studies  and 
through historical references in the great masters’ works 
 
TASKS 
1. Students  are  to  be  pair  themselves  in  a  group  of  two  and  select  any  2  architects  from  the  list 
below and do a comparative study on their small projects: 
 Ken Yeang 
 Jimmy Lim 
 Zaha Hadid 
 Le Cobusier 
 BIG Architects 
 Aldo Rossi 
 Santiago Calatrava 
 Kenzo Tange 
 Arata Isozaki 
 Mario Botta 
 Frank Lloyd Wright 
 Frank Gehry 
 Hijjaz Kasturi 
 Daniel Libeskind 
 And any other architects [subject to the lecturer’s approval]  
 
2. Select  a  small  project  designed  by  each  architect  [the  small  project  could  be  a  house/  bus 
shelter/  small  pavilion/  exhibition  booth/  etc.  Find  the  projects  that  are  complete  with  all 
architectural drawing [site plan, plan, elevations, sections, 3D and photos] 
 
3. Map of the following [using visual and written description] and  compare its application to the 
above projects. 
 
4. The mapping theories has to include all of the following: 
 SYMMETRICAL BALANCE; ASSYMMETRICAL BALANCE 
 SIMPLICITY; COMPLEXITY 
 BASIC FORMS AND SHAPES – EXPRESSION AND MEANING 
 PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS – TYPES OF SPACES 
 ZONING DIAGRAMS – THE BUBBLE AND CIRCULATIONS [SPACE HIERARCHY] 
 ELEMENTS OF SPATIAL DEFINITIONS – HORIZONTAL, VERTICAL AND OPENINGS 
 SPATIAL RELATIONSHIPS 
 ORGANISING PRINCIPLES 
 MATERIALS AND EXPRESSION STRUCTURE AND NON‐STRUCTURE 
 
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS 
1. Mapping  with  short  written  description  on  a  comparative  table  format.  To  be  presented  with 
ppt. 
2. Printout of the slides on A3 [2 slides per page‐landscape orientation] 
3. Cover design

2. Week 6: Tutorial 1: sketches and description [lecture 1] 
3. Week 7: Tutorial 2: sketches and description [lecture 2 & 3] 
4. Week 8: Submission & Presentation 
 
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
1. Mapping: visual and written complete and informative [15%] 
2. Presentation: professional and confidence [5%] 
 
This assignment contributes to 20% of the overall course marks.
