Example: Open and Process DataSample.las

The following provides a simple step-through of how to open and initially process the sample data supplied with
your installation (DataSample.las), perform two basic QA steps, reprocess the data, and export the output to
Google Earth™. The data is of the Lanzenkirchen village in Austria.

Open and Process the Sample Data File

1. Start E3De.
2. Select File > Open. The Open dialog appears.
3. Select DataSample.las from the C:\Program Files\ITT\E3De30\DataSample directory,
then click Open. The Convert Format dialog appears.
4. In the Coordinate System fields, keep the default values for Input Projection System, Input Datum, and
Input Units, but change the UTM Zone to 33N. Selecting the correct zone for this data ensures the export
product for Google Earth KML will be located correctly according to the terrain features.
5. Click OK. The Operations Log window opens to display the information being logged to it, and the status
bar of the main window shows the progress of opening the file. When complete, a point cloud displays in
the main window and a coarse elevation map displays in the Navigate window.

6. Process the data by clicking the Process All Data button on the toolbar. The Project Properties dialog
appears.
7. In the Project Properties dialog, keep the default settings and click the Start Processing button in the
dialog. The Navigate window, Operations Log window, and the status bar of the main window show the
progress of processing. Processing may take several minutes, depending on your computer system
configuration.

QA and Reprocess the Project

1. When processing is complete, click the Toggle QA Mode button on the toolbar to show an image
display of the rendered objects (i.e., buildings, trees, power lines) in the main window. The image in the
Navigate window is divided into grids.

2. Select the Run E3De 3D Viewer button on the toolbar to view a photorealistic 3D rendering of the
buildings, trees, and power lines.

3. Double-click on an object in the E3De 3D Viewer window, such as a building, and the E3De main window
brings that area to the center of the display.

4. Close the E3De 3D Viewer window.

5. Edit a building contour. In the E3De main window, double-click on a rooftop and select Edit Building

6. In the Cross Section window, click and drag a point in the vector to change the shape, then press the s key
to save the change. An inverted triangle remains visible in the main window to mark where there was a
change. More detailed instructions for how to edit items in E3De is available in Perform Quality
Assurance.

7. Now try deleting a power line. In the E3De main window, double-click on a power line and select Delete
Power Line. The power line is deleted.

8. Click the Toggle QA Mode button on the toolbar to exit QA mode.

9. Reprocess the data with the edits by clicking the Process All Data button on the toolbar to open the Project
Properties dialog, then click the Start Processing button in the dialog.
To export the output to Google Earth:
If you have Google Earth installed on your machine, you can export the processed data to a format you can
overlay on the globe.
