Scope:
This specification defines pertinent properties, test methods, parameters and sample preparation for the
evaluation of polypropylene for molding and extrusion. Typically, different materials have unique
requirements related to the generation of the specific properties. Following the requirements of this
specification assures consistent characterization and valid comparisons of polypropylenes. This method
provides a means to call out plastic materials for use in the manufacture of parts based on the material
composition and specific physical/mechanical properties. End users, engineers, sellers, and buyers of
polypropylene would in turn utilize the callout to specify a material for their particular application.

Specimen Preparation:
Specimen Preparation is based on classification of basic composition. Injection molding of test
specimens is required for all tests outlined except heat stability testing.

Conditioning:
Controlled laboratory atmosphere is required. Individual methods outline specific guidelines as to time
to test after molding.

Test Methods:
Testing outlined by the specification include Flow Rate (ASTM D1238), Density (ASTM D1505 or ASTM
D792), Tensile (ASTM D638), Flexural Modulus (ASTM D790), Izod Impact (ASTM D256) Deflection
Temperature (ASTM D648). Additional test methods are also called out.

Data:
Data is provided as outlined by specifications as called out by ASTM D4101. See individual methods
for more information.
