Chapter 2 Design Inputs

Summary
The project is to replace non-renewable power plant to renewable power plant in Torrijos, Marinduque
through construction a Wind, solar, biomass and wind solar hybrid. Geographical study and population
research. The study also considered the problem of the land. These includes: the safety and population of
the workers, the private land and public that may be affected during the construction, building of temporary
roads and trails, the transportation of materials and weather condition. The following supports such as the
coverage of the design project, duration of the project, constraints, issues and concerns will be explained to
provide a good quality information about the project. There are many factor that we must considered in
constructing the power plant first is the location appraisal, choosing location considered many factors, best
example is site solar irradiance. Elevations of the land area are considered since it will affect the structure of
the wind turbine and solar panel. Weather on the area also considered, solar irradiances must be measure
and the crest time of sun hours. Choosing the higher solar irradiance area means harvesting more energy.
The average wind speed on the area because it will affect the wind turbine performance on harvesting energy.
The lifestyle of the community for the producing the biomass energy. The duration of the project should also
considered. The period of the project should be comply as the client condition which are the cooperatives of
each substation. There will be more project to finish if the duration of the main project was followed. Correct
period of the project outputs to correct procedures done in making power plant, thus will make the power
plant reliable. The next one to be considered in this project is the constraint. The project should defend the
constraint by stating that it followed a correct standard. The last aspect to consider are the issues and
concerns about building power plant. Another is the economic cost how much money is needed to construct
the Power Plant Proposed project will include cost estimates include Operating cost, maintenance cost and
overall project cost to compare which one is better for the operation of the said power plant.

Scope of the Project

The scope of the project is the renewable power plant such as solar, biomass, wind and solar wind hybrid.
The calculation of each project power plant will shown to achieve .5 MW output of Torrijos Power Plant to
supply Torrijos, Marinduque. The said project will adhere to the standard and law. The power plant will only
supply the whole marinduque but Torrijos area only. The design criterion of the project is power efficiency,
cost and time to construct or manufacturability.

Figure 2.1 Location of Torrijos in Marinduque

Torrijos is 4th-class municipality in the province of Marinduque, Philippines, with a population of 29,366
people. Marinduque is an island province in the Philippines located in Southwestern Tagalog Region or
MIMAROPA, formerly designated as Region IV-B. Its capital is the municipality of Boac. Marinduque lies
between Tayabas Bay to the north and Sibuyan Sea to the south. It is west of the Bondoc Peninsula of
Quezon province; east of Mindoro Island; and north of the island province of Romblon.

Some parts of the Verde Island Passage, the center of world's marine biodiversity and a protected marine
area, are also within Marinduque's provincial waters. Marinduque is considered as the geographical center
of the Philippine archipelago by the Luzon Datum of 1911, the mother of all Philippine geodetic surveys. The
province is a heart-shaped island with a total land area of 952.58 square kilometres, situated between
Tayabas Bay in the north and Sibuyan Sea to the south. It is separated from the Bondoc Peninsula in Quezon
by the Mompong Pass. West of Marinduque is Tablas Strait, which separates it from Mindoro Island.

Figure 2.2 Solar Irradiance in the Philippines
In the given figure above, it shows the different irradiation in the Philippines. From yellow green to dark orange
indicates the level of irradiation. Torrijos, Marinduque specifically in the location of this project in the
NAPOCOR has solar irradiance of orange to dark orange indicating that this location is good for solar power
plant.

Figure 2.3 Elevation Level
The figure 2.2 shows the elevation land level of proposed Torrijos, Marinduque where the power plant
will built. The maximum elevation land level of the land is approximately 69 ft. (21.0312 meters). The
average elevation is 65 ft. (19.812 meters)

Figure 2.4. Shows the average wind speed in Visayas and Mindanao region
- Based on Philippine Electrical Code 2, 2009 and engerati.com, John Placente

Figure 2.12 states the different wind speed in different areas which shows in the color form. The
project only focuses to the area of Visayas and Mindanao which is shown as colored green and blue,
respectively. The figure shows that the wind speed in the Visayas region is higher than the wind
speed in the Mindanao region. The wind speed of the Visayas region is 240 kph while the wind speed
in the Mindanao area is 160 kph.
