Lanco News | Issue 31 | April 2010 About The Cover
On the cover is depicted an overview of Lanco Amarkantak
Thermal Power Station. Incorporated in the year 2003, Lanco
Amarkantak Power Ltd (LAPL) is a coal based thermal power plant
of 1920 MW comprising 2 units of 300 MW, and 2 units of 660 MW
each with super critical technology.

The strategic location of Lanco Amarkantak at Pathadi village near

Korba in the state of Chhattisgarh has the advantage of proximity
to coal mines and water resources. This enables the company to
supply power at most competitive tariff. LAPL has received all the
statutory clearances and approvals required for the first two units
of 300 MW and both the units were successfully synchronized
with the Western Region Grid. The first unit was synchronised on
May 1, 2009 and the second unit was synchronised on February
22, 2010.

LAPL has the distinction of being amongst the first few coal
based IPPs in the country to achieve financial closure and start
construction. LAPL is also amongst the first few coal based power
plants in the country to achieve full load in a record time of about
one month after synchronization for both the Units.

Encouraged by the success achieved in the first phase, LAPL has

decided to expand the project with addition of 2x660 MW (Units
3 & 4) supercritical units to the installed capacity. This capacity
addition is a significant step towards realisation of Lanco’s
ambitious growth plan of achieving 15000 MW by 2015.

At LAPL, the dedicated team of over 500 employees is fully

geared up for the fast-track completion of the project without
compromising on safety and quality. They also strive for the
development of the society by implementing various CSR
initiatives in the neighbouring project areas.

OBSERVATIONS BY

The focus and energy with which the Corporate Affairs is driving the dissemination
of the MVVs to every nook and corner of our Group is really appreciable. The zeal
Lanconians are displaying at every level across the Group during the MVV Rollout is
highly encouraging and promising. The euphoria has begun. The Awareness of What,
Why and How of MVVs has almost reached each of us.

This Awareness has to evolve into Knowledge; Knowledge into Deep Understanding,
leading to an Internalisation resulting in a Transformed Collective Behaviour – Lanco
Culture – the unique way in which every Lanconian thinks and interacts with people
inside and outside the Group. This calls for a continued and consistent communication
of MVVs with a focus on how to LIVE IT [put into practice] by the Corporate Affairs ably
supported and strengthened by synergetic initiatives at the Companies/Divisions of the
Group driven by the respective CEOs through collaborative efforts of their HoDs and HR.

A Narasimhan, Vice President - CA:

“I was quite fortunate to be a part of the Mission, Vision and Values rollout. I was
privileged to have the opportunity to meet all fellow Lanconians across the Country.
Wherever I went, I saw a lot of enthusiasm among Lanconians for our MVVs. Seniors like
SM Roy, K Rajagopal, P Panduranga Rao, S Pochendar showed such zest and zeal that
I too was swept away and became charged along with the participants. I wish to tell you
that this MVVs programme will not be a one-off affair; Corporate Communications will
continue to rollout regular programmes on our MVVs all the year long.”

Concluding remarks by Sreenivas Veluri, Director - CA:

“During the MVVs rollout, we have been given the knowledge of our Mission, Vision
and Values. These are concepts. With concepts, we can only make a beginning. Having
knowledge of our MVVs is not an end, but a beginning. This knowledge has to be put
into action, and through our action, we need to gain direct experience of living our MVVs.
This experience will give us an understanding and lead us to our objectives. So dear
friends, we have the knowledge and the desire to practice our MVVs, what is required
now is the tenacity to put it into practice and the fortitude to live our MVVs.”

Scholarship support to children

According to UNESCO, of the 75 million children of primary

During the current year, Lanco Foundation has taken a

paradigm shift in its approach to disability by adding prevention,
education, livelihoods and access components so as to ensure
that persons with disabilities realise their full potential and
maximise their socio-economic contribution to society.

These components are piloted from the current financial year

Research on influence of CSR on internal stakeholders (i.e.
employees) proved that CSR initiatives increase employee–
company identification (E–C identification). E–C identification, in
turn, influences employees’ commitment to their company. On
the basis of these findings, it is argued that CSR performance
can be an effective way for companies to maintain a positive
relationship with their employees and thus maximise productivity
and performance.

Having perceived an increased desire among Lanconians, through

interactions, for a long term and meaningful engagement in CSR
activities, Lanco Foundation designed ‘Sponsor a beneficiary’
programme in the year 2007-08, with an objective to provide a
platform for employees to actively participate in CSR activities.
This initiative was effectively integrated with the existing
Rehabilitation of the Disabled programme, wherein employee
contributions were directly linked to a person with disability
through four artificial limb fitting centers spread across 4 states.

After receiving an encouraging response from Lanconians, the

scope of this programme has been extended in the year 2009-10
by adding two more programmes to it. Thus the programme has
been aptly renamed as “Make a difference in 3 different ways”
(MD3).

Editorial

From ha-ha
to ahaa...

Challenges are what make work interesting; overcoming them is what makes work
meaningful. Our Vision for 2015 envisages ambitious goals of which we are by now
familiar. Aligned to these goals, we are prepared for challenges that lie ahead of
us. Meeting these challenges and achieving the outlined goals will require a special
effort from us... And the key to our success will be creativity and innovation.
& INNOVATION

As you read along, you will witness that the two major news this quarter have
been - the synchronisation of Amartantak (Unit-II) and commissioning of Drinidhar
HEP. The projects, despite of many constraints and challenges finished well on
time. You may wonder what has creativity to do with this. Creativity or innovation
CREATIVITY

is not essentially inventing something new; it is rather an attitude where one views
problems as opportunities for improvement. It is the way we blend motivation, time,
effort and skill for achieving a respective target.

Innovation, however, begins with creative ideas. At Lanco facilities across India, we
have seen some very good examples of innovation, those that recently won Lanco’s
Innovation Awards. These innovative ideas of our colleagues have motivated and
inspired us to be creative at our workplace.

Creativity is often sparked by ‘fun’. A study by the Business Council of Australia

found that ‘fun’ was one of the key elements of extraordinary, productive workplaces.
Fun, humour, laughter and playfulness all help us to be more creative and see the
world in a different way. Seeing things differently helps us to break old patterns and
develop unique products and innovative ways of doing things.

At Lanco, let us have fun in our workplace while simultaneously pursuing our
challenging, ambitious goals. Through creativity and innovation, let us transform
Lanco into an enterprise that will be admired for the quality of its people and for
inspiring growth…
