Dear Sir/Ma’am:

The greatest act of love was portrayed by Love Himself when He was nailed on the cross - Jesus
Christ. As beings created according to God’s image and likeness, we are called to share, give and
accept love.

St. Mary’s College of Tagum, Inc. will be hosting a unique event where love reigns – Kasalan ng
Bayan sa SMCT this coming September 10, 2015. This said event will be a great opportunity for
couples to start a new chapter in their lives as newlyweds.

With this matter, I would like to ask permission to your good office to enable the organizers of the
event to collect any amount of money as a financial support for the newlyweds of the said event.
The money collected will pave a way for the couples to start anew to support their respective
families.

Attached to this letter is the proposed budget for the said activity.

Very respectfully yours,

EVELINDA B. LAZAGA, M.A.

I. BACKGROUND
On November 30, 2014, the First Sunday of Advent, the Church in the Philippines entered
into the “Year of the Poor.” This is part of the nine year preparation for the hundredth
anniversary of the Christianization of the Philippines, which started in 2013 with the Year of the
Faith and will commenced in 2021 with the Year of the Mission.

“There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be
openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land."
(Deuteronomy 15:11). The poor is closest to the heart of the Church. Like Christ who became
poor to give us the riches we are enjoying now, the Church has preferential option for the poor
and the marginalized.

For the Catholic Church, the poor is not just a pastoral preference, it is an obligatory
choice for everybody in the church. It is a Christian preference. Pope Francis said in a statement:
“I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out in the streets, rather
than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security.”
Ours is a poor church serving the poor with mercy and compassion”, according to the vision-
mission of Pope Francis.

CBCP is suggesting that we have to “look into the eyes of the crucified Lord and to reflect
on the 8 Beatitudes or Blessings of Jesus” so that we will be guided in our spiritual life in the Year
of the Poor.
