Thermal and Shrinkage Loads

Temperature effects on the project structures will be considered for a range of temperatures. The Abu Dhabi
Municipality building regulations requires that all concrete structures safety withstand a temperature range of 40
°C. Basically a temperature range of (15 °C to +30 °C) (mean temp. at 30 °C) is adopted for the designs but the
effective temperature to the structural elements to be reviewed separately. When calculating stresses and strains
induced in concrete sections due to an overall thermal expansion or contraction, the following shall apply:
- The range of temperature variation during concrete construction and. Also, during normal operations will
be set to +- 35°C
- The shrinkage coefficient will be taken as 0.25 mm/m
- The coefficient of thermal expansion is 12.0 E -6/c for steel and 10.0 E-6/c for concrete

7. STRUCTURAL SYSTEM

7.1 Vertical Structural Members

Vertical dead and live loads generated by floor slabs that span between beams and transmit to vertical elements
(columns & Walls). Columns and walls in turn transfer those loads to foundations, shear wall distributed in both X & Y
directions shall represent the lateral resistance system against lateral forces developed on the structure by seismic and
wind applied loads.

7.2 Horizontal Structural Members

Considering the location of the project, cast in situ flat slab system is highly recommended. The above
system incorporates multiple advantages:
a- To use the concrete produced at the nearest plant.
b- Flat slab gives the architect the maximum freedom when distributing the vertical elements, c- It is
the best solution to accommodate the multiple slab openings in wet area.

7.3 Foundations System

Based on Soil Recommendation and based on our experience, we recommend to use deep foundation
instead of shallow foundation due to the high cost of soil improvement.

7.4 Method of Analysis & Design
Gravity loads such as self-weight, superimposed dead loads, and live loads are applied directly on the
floor area elements, were applicable. Wind loads are applied on the model through its rigid diaphragm.
Seismic load is considered by utilizing the equivalent static load method and/or elastic dynamic response
spectrum Modal Analysis. The analysis shall be carried out using a finite element computer program.
Three-dimensional model shall be prepared. Al concrete members will be modeled as shell and frame
elements with six degrees of freedom and corresponding six end forces. The structure will be designed for
load and combinations in accordance with this Design Criteria.
* P-Delta analysis (Second order analysis will be applied to the following projects)
