Making Your Own Bias Tape

If you are making your own bias tape, cut a 2” strip across the bias of your fabric as shown
above. The bias is 45 degrees to the selvage.

Sewing Instructions

Seam Allowance
3/8" unless otherwise noted

1. Fold and press your shoulder straps wrong sides together and place the angled end of your
straps along the top right side of the chest piece. The raw edges of your strap should be facing
out and lined up with the raw edges of the chest piece.

2. Place your lining chest piece face down on the main bodice piece with the straps in the
middle. Pin and then sew along the top edge.

3. Press your seam down along your lining and edgestitch your seam to your lining. To do this,
sew along the top edge of your lining, ⅛” from the seam.

4. With your front bodice facing down and your back bodice pieces facing up, line up the straps
along the top of the back bodice matching them up at the corners.

5. Place your lining right sides down over the straps and back bodice, matching up raw edges
and pin in place along the top edge and down the inside edge. Sew along the top edge, and
when you are ⅜” from the inside corner, leave your needle in, lift your presser foot, and pivot
your fabric before continuing to sew down the inside edge. Repeat for the other back piece.
Turn right side out, push out your corners and press.

6. With right sides together, place a strip of binding along one raw edge of the bodice and sew
with a 3/8” seam allowance.

7. Press your binding and seam allowance away from the bodice.

8. Working from the wrong side of your bodice, fold your binding to the wrong side ½” and
press.

9. Fold your binding again, so that the folded edge, just covers your stitching. Press and pin in
place.

10. Working from the right side of the fabric again, sew close to the inside edge of the binding,
making sure to catch the binding on the wrong side as you go.

11. Finish the top edge of your skirt with a serger or a zig zag stitch. You can also fold the
bottom edge under ¼” if you would prefer. Fold the top of your skirt down 1” and press.

12. Sew along the bottom edge of your fold, leaving a 1” opening to insert your elastic.

13. Use a safety pin to insert your elastic through the opening. When your elastic is all the way
around, overlap by ½” and sew together. Sew the opening you left in the skirt closed.

21. Tuck the short ends in by ½” and sew close to the edge.

22. Center your belt over the elastic and hand stitch in place along the sides to hold it in place. I
