DESIGN CONCEPT

I have designed a sustainable “Community-Based Recovery Home for Drug Dependents” (CRHDD) building that

will serve as health facility for drug dependents. The 4,365 square-meter building will enable the Local Government

Unit of Municipality of Loon to: (1) house patients with mild to moderate drug dependence, (2) do the therapeutic

treatment activities, and (3) vocational and educational support under an exclusive one roof rehabilitation dwelling.

The building’s sweeping form represents physical speed, which spirals up around the circumference of the dynamic

circular form. This exemplifies how the building’s design could help on immediate recovery of the drug dependents,

and cope in their environment (own home and routine or regular contacts) and/or patients who cannot be fully managed

in an outpatient setting. The building form also makes it typhoon and strong-winds resistant, with appropriate orientation

giving a well-ventilated structure.

Being a green building, the green environment will also contribute on the recovery of the patients. However, several

sustainable strategies have been integrated in the building since the CRHDD Building is committed to heal and cure

these substance-use dependents.

Due to the tropical climate of the Philippines, the building design integrates a ‘Terracotta Sunscreen System’ on the

exterior envelope that contributes to a reduction in the cooling system’s energy consumption. Moreover, green roofs

insulate the building and prevent storm water runoff. A significant portion of the exterior envelope will be constructed

with high-performance glass to provide daylight to the majority of the indoor spaces, to reduce energy requirements

for artificial lights.
