"Compass" is the drilling software most widely used by well planners for directional & horizontal planning, anti-
collision analysis and managing survey data for each well drilled. Error of ellipse reports can also be created as
well. COMPASS was created by Landmark Software & Services, a Halliburton company.
WELLPLAN
The "Well Plan" software is used to run torque & drag analysis to determine the forces that may affect the drill
string and/or casing. WELLPLAN is run in conjunction with Compass.
Successful wells begin in the office long before tripping the first line. Our veteran well planners use a
consultative approach to review all operational components of the drilling process, from determining
effective mud and casing programs to selecting an optimal bottomhole assembly (BHA).
The aim of the well planning phase is to integrate operational issues that contribute to the success of a well
plan and maximize uptime throughout the life of the project.
With the drilling program in place, we then use sophisticated wellbore design software to construct a
comprehensive well profile to reach the target objectives under the specified drilling conditions.
Anyone can drill from “point A” to “point B.” It takes a unique blend of experience and insight to keep a
directional operation ahead of the curve.
Through constant collaboration with our management and well planning teams, Crescent can successfully
plan and implement the most challenging directional drilling projects.
Staying on the right trajectory while drilling is critical to ensuring safe and efficient operations.
Rock properties, torque and drag, cost, and the location of existing wells can all cause potential
problems and affect the optimal well trajectory. Designed for both oil companies and directional
drilling contractors, COMPASS™ software is the industry’s premier application for directional
well path planning, survey data management, and anti-collision analysis enabling engineers to
steer the bit into the profitable pay zone.
Description: This five-day “Well Design and Analysis Using the COMPASS™, StressCheck™, and
WELLPLAN™ Software” course is a detailed, hands-on course where participants rapidly learn how
to utilize Landmark® software to model and analyze various aspects of well design. A combination of
theory and software usability will be covered to provide engineers a working knowledge of
engineering principles considered in the analysis. The COMPASS™, StressCheck™, and
WELLPLAN™ Software are all integrated, and use the Engineer’s Data Module™ (EDM™). During
this course, participants will build a firm foundation in data structure and the Engineer’s Data
Module™ (EDM™).
The COMPASS™software will be used for directional well trajectory design. Participants will import
and quality check survey data, evaluate planning options using a wide array of tools to generate 2D
and 3D well trajectories, and perform well collision avoidance by computing the distance between
wells and adjusting anti-collision parameters.
The StressCheck™ software is an extraordinarily powerful and easy-to-use engineering tool for the
design and analysis of casing strings. During this course, participants will learn fundamental casing
design principles, and the concepts behind design criteria while investigating burst, axial and collapse
loads. A special focus will be put on results interpretation.
The WELLPLAN™ software will be used to analyze the torque and drag forces acting on casing and
drill strings. A complete stress analysis will be performed for the string. The mechanical concepts and
theory behind the analysis will be explained. Participants will model well hydraulics including hole
cleaning, pressure losses, and equivalent circulating density (ECD).
On the final day, participants will have an opportunity to utilize functionality from COMPASS™,
StressCheck™, and WELLPLAN™ in an integrated workflow.
