Impressed by the swift handling of the Piper Arrow, Barry Reed invited Jan Schlichtmann to be involved

in the Woburn case—an environmental, mass-disaster case. Although his case partner Kevin Conway
warned him about the Woburn case’s lack of potential to win, Schlichtmann was attracted to handling the
case.

Realizing the legal, evidential, and financial difficulties in the case, Schlichtmann tried to dissuade the
parties on the basis of the lack of funding. Reverend Young proposed to utilize the funding from the
organization Trial Lawyers for Public Justice, where Schlichtmann was a co-founder.

Knowing to have a source of funding in the case, Schlichtmann met with the organization and worked
with Anthony Roisman, former US Department of Justice-Hazardous Waste Enforcement Section.

Upon further investigation, Schlichtmann, together with Roisman, finished drafting the complaint before
the three-year statute of limitation expires.
