Why Go To Church?
A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no
sense to go to church every Sunday. "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that
time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember
a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs
by giving sermons at all."
This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight
of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:
"I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000
meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those
meals. But I do know this.. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to
do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead to-
day. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead
today!" When you are DOWN to nothing...... God is UP to something! Faith sees the in-
visible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical
AND our spiritual nourishment!
"When Satan is knocking at your door, simply say, "Jesus, could you get that for
me?"

Learners will discover the basic doctrinal commitments of the Lutheran Confessions and how they may apply in con-
temporary parish settings. This course provides a lively, down–to-earth examination of central Lutheran teachings
as justification by grace through faith on account of Christ, the distinction between law and gospel, the theology of
the cross, the church and public ministry, the sacraments, and Christian callings in daily life. Students will gain new
insight into the basics of Lutheran teaching and how it can strengthen their faith and witness today. Students will
become thoroughly familiar with the two texts, understand the historical context out of which they speak, and dis-
cover new ways to apply these teaching to life in today’s parish. Presented by Dr. Timothy Wengert, Lutheran
Theological Seminary at Philadelphia.
The adult Sunday school class will begin on Sunday, October 3rd ay 8:45 am and will run for 10 weeks.

Greetings from South Carolina!
However I am reminded of God's presence in my life and call to Word and Sacrament. For a
class, I was asked to identify my "favorite" Bible verse and how that factors into how we (my
class and I) deal with change. As I sat down to think about this assignment, I kept coming back
to Isaiah 43:1-4. It is hard for me to identify just a favorite one but this is one that speaks to me
on several levels. Verse one talks about how "....I have called you by name." This can apply to
anyone. We are all called to be part of the body of Christ in which we all as disciples of Christ.
We are to use are gifts and talents to the best of our abilities and not ignore that call. I am
humbled to think of the mission that me and my fellow seminary students are embarking on.
Verse two states"....you will pass though the fire and not be burned." and verse four...."You are
precious in my sight and.....I love you." So whatever life seems to throw our way we are
protected because God sees us through all and loves us.
So for this particular moment, my life is full of history of the church, learning about the
Lutheran traditions, Greek, Greek and more Greek .Hope all is well at Redeemer. Thank you so
much for your prayers of support. If you would like to contact by mail, my address is
