I. Objectives
The lesson aims to:
Define the meaning of Audio Media and its related concepts
Determine the brief timeline and history of Audio Media
Evaluate the importance and relevance of auditory learning in teaching
II. Introduction
Audio has been used in education for decades already, beginning from the use of audio
cassettes in 1970’s up to the digital audio that we are using now. Today, there is a
widespread popularity of audio because you can access it anytime/anyplace using mobile
phones. And producing audio is easier, more affordable and readily available.
III. Content/Topic
Audio Media are materials or sounds that are transmitted, produced, or received through
high fidelity waves that are heard through certain equipment. Here’s a brief timeline of
Audio Media around the world:
Analog vs. Digital
A video about Audio Media will be presented on screen. It will show the definition and
difference of Analog and Digital Audio.
(See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btgAUdbj85E for more info)
Analog Audio is a representation of a sound that is analogous to the air pressure waves of
the sound while Digital Audio files are kept on a digital storage such as CDs, computers,
or flashdrives.
Compact Discs
Compact disc (CD) is a digital optical disc data storage format that was co-developed
by Philips and Sony and released in 1982. The format was originally developed to store
and play only sound recordings but was later adapted for storage of data (CD-ROM).
The CD was conceived in a meeting between Philips (then known as Royal Philips
Electronics) and Sony in 1979. The two companies argued about what size, shape and
technology the CD should support. It was eventually settled on a disc of 115 millimeters
in diameter and 74 minutes worth of storage. Why 74 minutes? To fit Beethoven's 9th
Symphony, of course.
The first CD ever made was pressed on August 17, 1982. CDs were first released in
Japan, and by March of 1983, the discs had made their way to the US and Europe.
The first CD player was the oh-so trendy Sony CDP-101 for the insane price of 1000
USD (or 2536.6 USD today). It was seen as far too cost prohibitive for the average
consumer to buy but it was the first portable, durable CD player the world had ever seen.
Despite a successful 30 years, the CD is now facing an uncertain future. CD sales began
declining in 2000 due to the increasing popularity of a new digital format known as the
MP3.

WAV
Streaming Audio
Streaming Audio is a method of delivering audio signal to your computer using the
internet. Unlike downloading .mp3 or .wav files, streaming audio will let you hear the
sound as it arrives to your computer instead of waiting to complete the download before
hearing it. Most popular audio streaming websites are:
Spotify (www.spotify.com)
Pandora (www.pandora.com)
Last.fm (www.last.fm)
Podcasts
Podcasting (from the word IPod and broadcasting) refers to recorded audio files in mp3
format that are distributed over the internet. These audio files can be sent automatically to
“subscribers” and stored in their computers for listening at their convenience.
IV. Conclusion
Audio Media is an effective tool that teachers can use before, during, and/or after
discussions. It can serve as an aid for motivational activities before discussing a topic, as
a supplement for discussion proper, or to assess learning by means of Flexible Learning
Activities. But keep note on when, why and how to use audio media in teaching.
