The K abala i s a g ro te s q u e d i s t o r t i o n o f Jew ish and p h ilo s o p h ic a l postur-
l a t i o n s . In o rd e r to make i t a p p e a r a n c ie n t and a u t h e n ti c , th e com
p i l e r s had to re c o u rs e to f r a u d . They c i r c u l a t e d a K a b a lis tic manu
s c r i p t which p u r p o rte d to have been co m p rised by an h o n o rab le Talm udi-
c a l d o c to r, Nechunya ben ha-K ana and o th e r s . I n v a in th e h ig h ly r e
s p e c te d M eir ben Simon and Rabbi M eshullam of B e z ie rs c a l l e d a t t e n t i o n
to t h i s f o rg e ry , which t o r e th e t i t l e o f B a h ir (Luminous) and condemn
ed i t to be b u r n t, a s i t c o n ta in e d b la sp h e m ie s a g a in s t th e g r e a tn e s s o f
God. However, th e book B a h ir m a in ta in e d i t s ground, and was in l a t e r

A poor c o p y is t, B erachya ben N a tro n a i N atkdan, c a l l e d in th e d i a l e c t

of th e Talmud, a lth o u g h he d id w rite many e x c e r p ts on th e p a s sa g e s
c o n c e rn in g th e th e o ry of c r e a t i o n an d th e c lo u d - c h a r lo t of E z e k ie l,
b u t alw ays i n s i s t e d t h a t th e y sh o u ld n o t be expounded b e f o r e th e
p e o p le . In f a c t , I can f in d nowhere in a u t h e n ti c , Je w ish h i s t o r y a

descended from a German fa m ily . L e f t an orp h an a t an e a r l y age by

a r i c h u n c le , M ardochai F r a n c is , a ta x - f a r m e r , and began t o stu d y th e
Talmud. The d ry stu d y o f th e Talm ud, w hich f i l l e d th e mind w ith
volum inous le a r n in g , u n f r u i t f u l h a i r s p l i t t i n g , and mere fo rm u la s , y e t
f a i l e d to s a t i s f y th e w ants o f th e h e a r t , seems to have become rep u g n
a n t to L u y ra, and t o have d r iv e n him to f a n t a s t i c m y stic ism . He p r e
f e r r e d th e aw ful l o n e lin e s s o f th e N ile c o u n try to th e n o is e o f th e
sc h o o l; a b s t r a c t i o n i n w o rld s o f m y sticism and devout p ra y in g to work

He was g r e a t l y a t t r a c t e d to th e Z ohar, w hich had been p r i n t e d f o r th e
f i r s t tim e , and w id ely sp re a d a b ro a d , had become a c c e s s ib le to e v e ry
body. The more f a m i l i a r h e became w ith th e K abala th ro u g h h i s a b s o rp
t i o n in th e sounding e m p tin e ss o f th e Z ohar, th e more d id he seek
s o l i t u d e , and th e l e s s I n te r c o u r s e he had w ith men.
He even n e g le c te d h i s young w if e , o n ly v i s i t e d h i s house from S abbath
to S ab b ath , and spoke l i t t l e , t h a t l i t t l e b e in g i n Hebrew.
L uyra i s s a id to have s p e n t s e v e r a l y e a r s i n s o l i t u d e I n t h i s m anner,

o f i t s b e in g exposed in S p ain a s a book o f Moses de Leon, and t h a t i t
