Insulating Resin Guides » Transformer Resin

What is Transformer Resin?

Transformer resin is simply another name for insulating varnish. Without this resin,
transformers would quickly fail as their coils would wear out due to contamination from
moisture, dust, and damage from vibrations. Transformers are machines that
change voltage (i.e. electrical to electrical energy conversion).

Transformer resin provides a second layer of insulation that immobilizes and

encases the coils to prevent internal damage from vibrations and external damage
from the environment. The use of transformer resin is not limited to transformers but
applied in all situations where there are energized coils of wire such as electric motors
and generators.

Epoxy Encapsulation

Epoxy encapsulation, or "potting," is the process by which a transformer's main

components, the core and coil, are completely sealed with epoxy or a similar material,
such as silica and/or resin. This type of transformer resin is different from the
insulating varnish mentioned above and provides additional protection to a
transformer's windings. It is rarely found in transformers larger than 15 kVA due to
increased cost, weight, and impedance.

Benefits of Encapsulation
Compared to traditional open-core designs, encapsulated transformers provide many benefits.

Low Noise - The core and coil is protected by a mixture of silica and sand resin that significantly reduces audible noise.

Physical protection - Encapsulated transformers are preferred in areas with harsh environmental conditions. The type of transformer resin reliably protects the
transformer's fragile windings, core, and lead connections from hazardous gases, dust, moisture, and corrosive atmospheres. These types of transformers are
commonly found in petrochemical plants, food processing facilities, steel mills, pulp and paper plants, and marine installations.

Increased effectiveness of heat dissipation - The epoxy compound used for potting has a high coefficient-of-thermal conductivity. Thus, it is very effective at
dissipating heat away from the windings and core.

Encapsulated transformers can be used in higher temperature environments without exceeding allowable temperatures for their insulation class because of reduced
winding temperature differentials. Epoxy encapsulation also increases electrical insulation reliability more than tape or paper insulation.
