2. COMMENTS ON INSTRUMENT MODEL

2.1 MODEL USED

Most students prefers the talking and sharing information activities as they feel more
comfortable taking about issues that are related and familiar to them.

2.2 CONSTRUCT

1.1 Grammar and Vocabulary:

a) Strength
2% managed to get A’s and 14% B’s, increase by 1% from last
year.

b) Weaknesses
More than half students have problems in grammar and they are
lack of vocabulary especially in adjectives. These problems hinder
their abilities to describe during the oral activities.

c) Problems
Too much of mother tongue interference affected the quality of
oral and further more they do not have the surrounding to
communicate in English.
1.2 Pronunciation, intonation and tune

Strength
a) Some managed to deliver their oral with excellent pronunciation,
intonation and tune. Students have low self-esteem in using the
language and therefore lack of fluency.

b) Weaknesses
Most of them are memorizing and therefore tend to be very stiff
and too dependent to the text selected.

c) Problems
Speaking becomes redundant and sounds less authentic.

1.3 Fluency:

a) Strength
Most students with 15 marks below have low self esteem in using
the language and therefore lack of fluency.

b) Weaknesses
Students are not well prepared and select the wrong theme for their
oral. Some select the theme that difficult for them to explain in
their own words.

c) Problems
` They only speak using their L1 (mother tongue) and when they use
English they have to think in L1 and then translate it to L2..

2.3 Scoring Criteria:

a) Only 2% managed to get A

b) 41% are weak and 20% are very weak

c) Problems
Candidates do not read and do not use the language daily.

3. SUGGESTIONS TO CANDIDATES

 Candidates should expose themselves to latest issues.


 Candidates must be very selective in choosing their group members.
 Candidates shouldn’t be too rigid to their original preparation.
 Candidates must be creative and relax.

4. SUGGESTIONS TO TEACHERS

 Teachers should provide details to students on the procedure of ULBS


 Teachers should provide ample time for the students
o Teachers should discuss the strength and weaknesses of the students so
that they can improve their performance.
 Teachers can always asses the students during teaching in the class.
 Teachers must make sure new students come into the school with their
BMI form.

5. ISSUES AND SUGGESTIONS

 For weak students, teachers must prepare the evidence for the students.
 If the students are weak, teachers can use Model 1 for the three
assessments
 As a motivation, ULBS marks can be added into the exam marks

All issues already discussed as above.
