1.

General description

Lawang Sewu is from javanese language which mean "Thousand Doors" is a landmark in
Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, built as the headquarters of the Dutch East Indies Railway
Company. The colonial era building is famous as a haunted house, though the Semarang city
government has attempted to rebrand it.
the complex consists of several buildings, two main building named A and B and two smaller
building than A and B, named C and D. lawang sewu located in Pemuda Street.The L-shaped
A building faces the Tugu Muda roundabout.There are two identical towers on A building,
which were originally used to save water, with capacity of 7,000 litres.The building have the
large stained-glass windows and a grand staircase in the center.There was also once an
underground tunnel connecting A building to several other sites in the city, including the
governor's mansion and the harbour.
The B building is located behind A building.It is three floors, with the first two floors
consisting of offices and the third is a ballroom.The building has a high large windows, also a
basement floor that is submerged by water to make the building cooler through evaporation.
In front of A building, there is a monument as a symbol to five employees killed during the
Indonesian War of Independence.
2. The Planning of Lawang Sewu Design

The building plan resembles the letter L, there is a courtyard behind the building. At
the southeastern edge of the courtyard there are printing buildings, engine rooms and bicycle
halls. In keeping with the NIS philosophy, NIS directors provide direction to the building, in
one side should impress simplicity but in the other side also must be well designed. The same
philosophy will also be in the design of Semarang Tawang station.Except the entrance hall in
the NIS office was designed to be grand building.
Referring to Indies architectural design, the building is missing front and rear
hallways to guard buildings from direct sunlight. In the middle of the building also stretched
a hallway again. Beside to connecting the space, the central hallway serves to cool the
temperature inside the building.In the air circulation system of this building, the reception
room serves as an air chimney to channel the hot air out.
the roof was designed to be waterproof and make the space on the roof stay cool.
Keeping the space under the roof remained dry and cool is important because the archival
documents are stored here. the double roof was create on the top of office, as the inner roof,
under the outer roof.
3. Development Process
The first stone is laying on February 27, 1904 begins with a ceremony salvation.
Guard’s House and Printing office were built first, and used to be NIS Office while
construction is underway. Construction of the main building waiting improvement of
soil structure. The soil at the site after the test was not capable of supporting the
building as big and heavy as that. The soil should be improved by digging up to 4
meters and replace it with a layer of volcanic sand. This process was taken a long time
and costly. During the construction period, every day was done by 300 workers. On
July 1, 1907, the NIS office was finished. Without the inauguration ceremony, the
building was soon used.

4. Main section
Pertama, museum. ruang ini akan mengakomodasi berbagai benda yang memiliki nilai
sejarah, baik itu lukisan maupun patung.

Kedua, ruang pamer. Rencananya akan dikonsep seperti gerai pamer seni kreatif yang
pesertanya se-Nusantara. Konsepnya dirancang tematik, setiap bulan temanya berbeda.
Misalnya bulan ini pameran batik dan bulan besok pameren kerajinan.

Selasar teras ini tampil indah dan menjadi objek foto yang bagus.

Ketiga, tempat makan. Ini rencana jangka panjang bahwa di Lawang Sewu ini akan
dihadirkan foodcourt.

Keempat, ruang audiovisual. Ruang ini adalah ruang digital yang akan memperlihatkan
video sejarah Lawang Sewu dari dulu hingga sekarang. Jika benar-benar terealisasi, tempat
ini akan benar-benar menarik.

After a
long mace sewu as neglected,finally Lawang Sewu done restorationthat took long enough,
eventuallycompleted by the end of June 2011 andre-opened to the public after the date ofJuly
5, 2011 was inaugurated by First
Lady Ani Bambang Yudhoyono and CraftExhibition followed
by event Nusantaraflagship product featuring traditional products from around
the archipelago.
