STD-BSI BS SSOO-ENGL 1997 MM LL24bb9 0580265 225 me Issue 1, January 1997 BS 6500 : 1997 ——— Annex D Requirements for ferritic steels in bands MO to M4 inclusive for vessels required to operate below 0°C D.1 Introduction D.L.1_ The requirements specified in this standard, as amplified by this annex, are intended to provide criteria for the avoidance of brite fracture, They take into account good engineering practices which have developed in the pressure vessel and other industries ‘to ensure that materials and design details are ‘adequate to resist brittle fracture under the design ‘conditions specified. The requirements also take into account a broad spectrum of results from experimental ‘test data. D.1.2 Where itis found difficult to meet the requirements of this standard using the criteria, specified, alternative methods of assesament, eg. fracture mechanics as outlined in annex U are permitted to be used by agreement between the ‘Purchaser, the manufacturer and the Inspecting Authority. NOTE. Whilst ths standard covers the requtements fr the design ‘nd construction of new preavurevessls, tne pancples of thie ‘nex may, withthe agreeeent ofthe authority be used forthe assesoment of veel in sere, D2 Application D.2.1. The following additional requirements shall apply to the design, materials and inspection of vessels which have a minimum design temperature, Bp, less han 0°C. Figures D.1 and D2 specity the design reference temperature depending upon the reference thickness and the maverial impact test temperature for ‘the as-welded and the post-weld heat treated cconcditions respectively. ‘These requirements shall apply to all pressure parts and attachments welded thereto but not to non-preasure parts such as intemal baffle, et provided that these are not attached to a pressure part by welding and are not otherwise an integral part of a [Pressure part. The application of this annex is limited to fervtic steels in categories MO to M4 incluslve as specified in tables 2.32 to 2.312 of this standard except that rimming steels shall not be used at minimum design temperarures below 0°C. Notes 18) and 19) of table 231 restrict or qualify the use of some ferric steels in eategory MI for vessels designed to operate below 0°C. D3 Definitions D.3.1 Design reference temperature ‘The design reference 6p 1s the temperature to be used in figures D.1 and D.2 for determining the ssultability of materials for resisting britle fracture. 1.8.2 Design reference temperature adjustment ‘The design reference temperature, Oy, shall not be ‘greater than the minimum design temperature adjusted, ‘8 appropriate, as follows: Oe fh + Bs + Oc + Ot where 4 is the minimum design temperature as defined inS.25; % ig an adjustment depending on the calculated ‘membrane stress, as follows: % is 0°C when the calculated tensile ‘membrane stress ls equal to or exceeds 273; 95 is +10°C when the calculated tensile membrane stress is equal to or exceeds 60 Nimun® but does not exceed 2/3; % is +60°C when the calculated tensile membrane stress does not exceed 50 N/mm. In this case the ‘membrane stress should take account of 8 180°C for category 1 components; fis -10°C for category 2 components; 18 ~20°C for eategory 3 components, 4; an adjustment in applications where all platos Incorporating subassemblies are post-weld heat treated (PWHT) before they are but-welded together, but the main seams are not subsequently post-weld Neat treated. tn these applications Os +15°C. NOTE. In cases where the calculated tanile membrane stress can vary withthe miu design temperature, eg uo esrigeration during depressurtzaton, the coinciaent values Of 6, and By should ‘be evaluated, allowing, where appropriace, forthe possi a ‘epresartaation whe stl old (ag, by hydraulic overtil). The, condition that results the lowes value of 6 should be used for {he purpose uf selection of mates. The material impact tet, ‘emperature determined tn accordance ‘ih De at which figure D.1 or D2 In entered to give the minimum, design reference temperate of the materal for any given reference thikaess, or the mascimum reference ‘hickacee for ay (given design reference temperature. Alternatively if the mun temperate andthe reference tekneas are ‘mown figure D.1 or D2 can be used to determi the Tere ‘material tpt toot tcmperate. eB 007 Copyright by the Brits Standards Inetution Tue Sep 07 13:18:21 1000, DA STD-BSI BS SSGQ-ENGL 2997 MM WL24Lb9 O580270 TH? D.3.8.2 Weld nock flanges, plate and slip-on (or udbed) flanges, tubeplates and flat ends ‘The reference thickness shall be the greater of ‘one-quarter the thickness ofthe flange, tubeplate o fat end, or the thickness of the branch or shell tached thereto (eee figures D'S and D4). If the distance from the flange, tubeplate or flat end to ‘the butt weld is not lees than four times the thickness of the butt weld, the reference thickness for the sas welded coneition shall be the thickness at the edge of the weld preparation. ‘The reference thickness of tubeplates having tubes attached by welding shall be taken as not less than the tube thickness.
