Graduate Student Positions

Several Graduate Research Assistant Positions are available at Laboratory of Ambient and Wearable Systems,
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alabama (http://claws.eng.ua.edu). The
laboratory is engaged in several research projects covering physiological and behavioral monitoring. The laboratory
develops state-of-the-art monitoring solutions and closely collaborates with leading clinical researchers in the areas of
nutrition and obesity, rehabilitation, physical activity monitoring, smoking behavior and others. The research pursued in
the laboratory has been published in the leading venues (various IEEE transactions, Nature Publishing group, Elsevier,
etc.) and received awards such as Bluetooth Innovation of the Year. PhD graduates from the laboratory are demanded
and find employment in academia or well-known companies such as Intel, Medtronics, Seagate, and others.

The positions are available in two tracks:

1. Analog and digital hardware development. The ideal candidate will have a hands-on experience in design,
prototyping and fabrication of digital and analog electronic circuits, FPGA design, microcontroller interfacing, use
of Bluetooth/Zigbee and other wireless interfaces, printed circuit board design, C/C++ programming, as well as
familiarity with Matlab, Labview and digital signal processing.

2. Signal processing and pattern recognition of biomedical signals. The ideal candidate will have a practical
experience with signal processing algorithms as well as familiarity with methods of machine learning and
computational intelligence. Matlab, Labview and C/C+ (or Java) proficiency is desired. Knowledge of biomedical
instrumentation is desired.

The candidate is expected to be a reliable and self-motivated team player, preferably with a Masters degree in
Electrical/Computer/Biomedical Engineering, although candidates with a Bachelors degree will also be considered. The
assistantship covers a yearly stipend, tuition and health insurance. These positions may potentially lead to a PhD degree
in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

To apply for a position, send the following documents in PDF format to Dr. Edward Sazonov (esazonov@eng.ua.edu):
