Theatre Architecture

Proscenium Stage- the stage proper is a separate room from the auditorium (picture frame stage)
Thrust Stage- the stage THRUSTS ;) into the audience audience surrounds performance area on three sides
Arena Stage- the audience is surrounding them on all sides.playing space that is surrounded by the audience
Black Box Theatre- room with moveable stage and seating. Reconfiguring the room is possible.

Greek Theatre
Theatron- where they sat (slope into a hillside. stage at bottom of the hill) (all seats good seats)
Orchestra- the area in front of the performance platform where the chorus would sing and dance to represent the
spoken word that was done just before it.
Skene- the structure in the back. used for actors to go change, store things. also sounding wall for projection to go to
the audience. stone
Eccyclema- rolling wagons that could bring set pieces, dead bodies, stuff like that. maybe some props idk
Periaktoi- three sided scenic unit. one side is like oh a house, the other side could be like da club
Machina- when the intervention of the gods occured. device to raise and lower guy to the stage
Pinakes- painted panels hung from the skene building.

Roman Theatre
Cavea- where people sat in the roman theatre (building)
Scaenae Frons- building in the back of the stage. skene of sorts. sounding wall
Velum-protect audience members from sunlight
Stage machinery- more special effects gods coming in and shit

Medieval Theatre
Pageant Wagons- generally worked on by trades people, tells story. performance on the wagon (fisherman tell story
of Jonah the whale)
Mansions- playing area that surrounds the square. heaven, hell, purgatory
Platea- performance area, day long stories days long sometimes
Stage Machinery or Secrets- built into wagons

Renaissance Theatre
Vitruvius - De Architectura- back in roman times series of books, given understanding of roman architecture and
engineering. theaters moving indoors, cover theatre. light is fire
Teatro Olympico-
Forced Perspective- moves when the actors moved on stage
Raked Stage- the stage is lower when farther away, move upstage the stage inclines. (italy)
Stock Sets- scenery representing a particular location
Drops- painted scenery. large piece of fabric that has been painted upon.

Elizabethan Theatre
Inner Below- locations on stage
Inner Above- locations on stage second floor balcony scene on romeo and juliet
Pit - groundlings would come and watch the show
Groundlings- come at bottom more engaged tho
Galleries - pay to come and see the show money expensive
Private Boxes- more well to do to show off be seen I'm fancy oo lala

Kabuki Theatre
Elevator traps- sections of the floor would open up
Elevator stages- large sections would lift up and lower dis in japan
Revolving stages- they spin?? he goes so fracking fast
Concentric revolving stages- a couple that revolve against one another. stylized

Restoration Theatre- growth of proscenium stage


Apron- part of the stage that juts out in front of the opening
Wings- left and right of opening, allows for entrances and storage - painted scenery
Borders- hide seeing machinery
Perspective Painting - painting in perspective, vanishing point. 2 dimensional surface
Gas lighting- piping ignitable gas to make flame bigger and brighter. control comes into play for lighting
Limelight- the way we push the fire against the limestone to create a more effective glow wows pretty shiny
stepping into the limelight omg
Carbon-arc - two electrodes put them close is creates a light or a spark ark that is so very bright ouch my eyes!
