WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN-DAY PERIOD VALID 4TH TO 10TH
SEPTEMBER, 2018.

Review of weather for the last seven-day Forecast for the next seven days (4th to

1. WEATHER REVIEW FOR THE LAST SEVEN DAYS (27TH AUGUST TO 2ND SEPTEMBER, 2018)
1.1 Rainfall Review
Rainfall continued to be recorded over parts ofthe Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West of the Rift
Valley, Central and South Rift Valleyand the Central Highlands (including Nairobi) as depicted in
Figures 1 and 2. Comparing the current review period (27th August to 2nd September, 2018) to the
previous week (20th to 26th August, 2018) it is noted that there was general decrease in rainfall
amounts over much of the country although some stations like Nakuru and JKIA recorded notable
increases.

During the period under review, Nakuru Meteorological Station recorded the highest seven-day total
rainfall of 87.0mm. Other stations that recorded significant total rainfall amounts include Butere in
Kakamega County (84.1mm), Kaimosi Tea Factory in Vihiga County (80.5mm), Kisii (65.3mm), Eluuya
Girls in Bungoma County (59.2mm) and JKIA (50.7mm).

JKIA recorded the highest amount of rainfall within 24 hours i.e. 50.7mm on 27th August 2018. Other
stations including Nakuru, Narok, Butere, Eluuya Girls and Kaimosi Tea Factory recorded heavy
rainfall of between 20 and 50mm in 24 hours.

 
1.2 Temperature Review

The Central Highlands (including Nairobi) and parts of the Southeast Lowlands continued to
experience cool and cloudy conditions that at times persisted throughout the day. Comparing the
current review period (27th August to 2nd September, 2018) to the previous week (20th to 26th August,
2018) it is noted that day-time (maximum) temperatures generally decreased over much of the
country although coastal stations recorded increases. Night-time (minimum) temperatures generally
increased over most parts of the country.

Lodwar Meteorological Station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of 35.8°C on 28th
August while Nyahururu Meteorological Station recorded the lowest daily minimum temperature of
7.6oC on 31st August. Mandera Meteorological Station recorded the highest seven-day average
maximum temperature of 34.1oC and while Nyahururu Meteorological Station recorded the lowest
seven-day average minimum temperature of 9.7°C. (See Figure 4 below).

2. FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS FROM 4TH TO 10TH SEPTEMBER 2018.

The forecast for the next seven-day period is as follows:

 Rainfall is expected to continue over a few parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West
of the Rift Valley and the Central and South Rift Valley though with reduced intensities.
 Cool and cloudy conditions are likely to continue over the Central Highlands (including Nairobi)
and parts of the Southeast Lowlands. There is also a possibility of rainfall over a few high-
ground areas.
 Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of more than 25 knotsare expected over the
northwestern, eastern sector and coastal region for much of the forecast period.

DETAILED REGIONAL FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS 4TH TO 10TH SEPTEMBER 2018.

The Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Central and South Rift Valley (Counties of
Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, UasinGishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet,
Nandi, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia) are likely to
experience mainly sunny intervals in the mornings throughout the forecast period. Afternoon/evening
showers and thunderstorms are expected over few places during the forecast period.

Northwestern (Counties of Turkana, West Pokot and Samburu) are likely to experience sunny intervals
during the day and partly cloudy skies in the evening during the forecast period.

Central Highlands (including Nairobi area) (Counties of Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga,
Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka) are likely to experience mainly cool and cloudy
mornings (with the possibility of rains) giving way to sunny intervals.There is a possibility of
afternoon/evening showers over few high-ground areas at the beginning of the forecast period.

Northeastern (Counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo) are likely to experience
sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy skies in the evening throughout the forecast period.

 
Southeastern Lowlands (Counties of Kajiado, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos and Taita Taveta) are likely to
experience mainly sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy skies in the evening throughout the
forecast period.

The Coastal Strip (counties of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale) are likely to experience
morning and early afternoon showers over few places during the forecast period. Evenings are likely to
be partly cloudy.

N.B: This forecast should be used in conjunction with the daily (24-hour) forecast issued by this
Department.
