1 - INTRODUCTION

PURPOSE

This maintenance Manual defines the general criteria and procedure to follow
for a correct maintenance of Daechang Pot Bearings.

WORKING TIME

Each maintenance action can be performed in several steps by 8 hours.

QUALIFIED PERSON OR INSPECTOR

A person who, by possession of professional qualification on mechanical works,

or who by extensive knowledge, training and experience on the Daechang Pot
Bearings has demonstrated during the installation or during the first inspection
under the Daechang’s supervision, ability to solve or resolve problems related to
the subject matter.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

The inspection of the bearing should be conducted in an organized and

systematic approach that will maximize efficiency of the personnel and the
equipment while minimize the possibility of overlooking any bearing detail.
Clear, concise and detailed notes should be taken which can be easily
interpreted when preparing the final report.
Photographs and sketches should be made to assist in describing bearing
conditions.

LOCATION OF BEARING

The identification of the location, code, and type of bearing is required

2 – INSPECTION EQUIPMENT

SAFETY EQUIPMENT

The inspector or the technician on behalf of the owner should maintain a

program of safety for themselves and other involved personnel while on the job.
The followings are a suggested typical list of useful safety equipment for
bearing inspection.

- all necessary site specific traffic control

- proper fall protection devices
- hard hat
- reflective vest
- safety shoes with no slip soles
- safety glasses
- work gloves
- insecticide for wasps
- first aid kit
- flashlight or spotlight

No attempting to execute the inspection until you know and understand all
safety precautions and manual instructions recommended.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT FOR INSPECTION

Many basic tools are needed to perform hands-on inspections, followings are a
typical list of suggested tools and equipment to be used in bearing inspection.
- drawings, technical sheet and catalogue of the bearing
- sketches of the bearing and the bridge
- inspection forms
- paper, pencil
- meter tape for measuring long or deformed sections
- scraper for removing deteriorated paint and light corrosion
- inspection mirror with extension arm for viewing inaccessible areas
- caliper dial or micrometer
- camera or video recorder for recording observed defects
- tool kit to carry tools
- dry film paint gauge for measuring paint film thickness
- screw driver
Technical Report page 5 / 10

- pliers, open end wrenches and hammer

- flashlight for viewing darkened areas
- pocket knife
- wire brush for removing corrosion products
- carpenter’s level
- plumb bob and line
- thermometer- air and contact

3 – GENERAL REQUIREMENTS, TIME AND FREQUENCY OF

CHECKS

The state of life and conservation of the bearing shall be checked by an

inspector with enough experience and knowledge about the devices in subject.
The number and frequency of inspections shall be at least equal to the ones for
the main structure; we recommend the inspection no less than five years.
Whether the inspector is not able to evaluate particular conditions or he is not
able to recommend repairing actions, he shall have to contact the Daechang
Technical Department to have the necessary help.

4 – STANDARD INSPECTION – SUBJECT OF CHECK

Recommended frequency:
- first inspection within one year of the structure being put into service
- following inspections no less than five years or suggested frequency by the
Engineer

All inspection procedures are common to all POT BEARINGS. During the
standard inspection you will have to check the following items.

1. Sufficient capacity for the remaining movements according to the age and
temperature of structure at time of inspection and at time of installation.

2. Condition of bedding and fixing.

3. Tightening of the bolts.

4. Condition of the sliding parts with PTFE

Technical Report page 6 / 10

5. Conditions of the guiding elements.

6. Rotation between the elements of the bearing

7. Presence of visible defects;

- cracks
- wrong position, parallelism or level
- unexpected movements and/or strains
- vibrations
- disconnections of the bolts
- damage and/or vibrations of the bearings.
- damaged anticorrosion protection

8. Presence of visible defects in the elements near the bearing.(Concrete, etc.)

The results of inspection shall be recorded.

The report will be completed with drawings, sketches and photos of the bearing
to show the actual situation found during the inspection.
In case of visible defects or damages that can affect the behavior of bearing and
it is necessary to perform more checks as described in following paragraph for
the main inspection.

5 – MAIN INSPECTION

The main inspection shall be performed within one year of the structure being
put into service and then every ten years or after an earthquake or an
extraordinary event.
The main inspection has the scope to give precise information about the
condition of the bearing and to assure that the device goes on to satisfy the
design requirements for all its life. The main inspection shall cover the same
items of standard inspection for all the bearing elements.
In addition a few randomly selected sections of the bearings shall be inspected
to better check the following items:

- Condition of the concrete near the anchors

- Presence of visible defects in the structural elements under/over the bearing
Technical Report page 7 / 10

- Condition of the PTFE (visible height ≥ 1 mm) and stainless steel

- Sufficient capacity for the remaining movements and rotations
- Condition of the deformable elements
- Conditions of the corrosion protection.

6 – CHECK RESULTS

Depending on the results of inspection one of the procedures here below must
be performed.

A. Positive result:
no actions

B. Abnormalities about position, rotations and movement:

more measurements for movement capacity at different temperatures. In case of
negative results, it is opportune to contact Daechang Technical Department

C. Structural abnormalities about bearing elements:

repair (correction of position, replacement of element, etc.).
In any case we recommend contacting Daechang Technical Department.

D. Important defects or structural abnormalities in the elements near the

bearings:
repair. We recommend contacting Daechang Technical Department also.
