EXPERIMENT NO.

2A
INVERTING AMPLIFIER
AIM: To design an Inverting Amplifier for the given specifications using Op-Amp IC 741.
OBJECTIVE: To study and design Inverting amplifier (DC and AC) having Gain of 10 using
IC 741C.
APPARATUS REQUIRED:

Sr No. Equipment Specifications Quantity

1 Operational Amplifier IC741 1
2 Resistors 10K, 1K 1 each
3 Dual power supply +- 15V 1
4 Multimeter - 1
5 Bread Board - 1
6 Connecting wires and probes Single stranded Needed
7 Function Generator 2 MHz 1
8 DSO 30 MHz 1

THEORY:
The input signal Vi is applied to the inverting input terminal through R1 and the non-inverting
input terminal of the op-amp is grounded. The output voltage Vo is fed back to the inverting
input terminal through the Rf-R1 network, where Rf is the feedback resistor. The input terminals
of the op-amp draw no current because of the large differential input impedance. The potential
difference across the input terminals of an op-amp is zero because of the large open loop gain.
Due to these two conditions, the inverting terminal is at virtual ground potential. So, the current
flowing through R1 and Rf are the same.

IC 741
Here the negative sign indicates that the output will be an amplified wave with 180° phase shift
i.e. gives inverted output. By varying the Rf or Ri, the gain of the amplifier can be varied to any
desired value.

Hence, the Closed-Loop Voltage Gain of an Inverting Amplifier is given as.

and this can be transposed to give Vout as:

PROCEDURE:
1. Check the components.
2. Connections are given as per the circuit diagram.
3. +VCC and -VCC supply is given to the power supply terminal of the Op-Amp IC.
4. DC input is applied to the inverting input terminal of the Op-Amp for DC amplification.
5. Output is measured on DMM.
6. By adjusting the amplitude and frequency knobs of the function generator, appropriate
input voltage is applied to the inverting input terminal of the Op-Amp.
7. The output voltage is obtained on the DSO and the input and output voltage waveforms
are observed.

DESIGN:
Gain of an inverting amplifier Av= Vo/Vin= -Rf/Rin
The required gain= 10
i.e. Av= - Rf/Ri = 10
Let Ri = 1KὨ, Then Rf = 10KὨ
