Summary.--The main objectives of rehabilitation treatment in amputees are the patient''s psychophysical
recuperation by prosthesis fitting and his or her social and
occupational reinsertion. Objective assessment measures (scales of functional evaluation) are needed for
measuring the achievements of rehabilitation therapy, which would allow a standard terminology to be
used. The purpose of this study was to review different assessment scales used in amputees. We classified
these scales as universal scales (Barthel Index, Pulses Profile, Functional Independence Measure and
Edinburgh Scale), limb-specific scales (Enneking Scale and Locomotion Score in Rheumatoid Arthritis),
and amputee-specific scales (Day Scale and the Prosthethic Profile of the Amputee questionnaire). A
comparative table was made of the scale by categories and items. The scales are described, as well as the
main features of some of them.
